The complicated made easy.
From time to time I am asked to explain certain aspects of my religion. Although I can recite some key information regarding holidays, etc., I find that this book offers me a quick brush up course on any given subject. I especially like the easy layout where I can immediately turn to a subject that interests me. It is well written and helps me look good when trying to explain a complicated subject.

Educational and interactive literature.
When I heard a librarian read this book to a group of fourth graders, I believed this librarian threw a great opportunity to use this book as an educational facility for these students and others to come. I am a teacher, and once I heard this book, my heart lit up with joy. This book does not stop when it is read to the students. We can proceed by teaching them about our country's history, environmental issues, social issues, and trees in general. We can help students understand the importance of trees to every day life (oxygen) and putting trees into good use such as paper, pencils, even gum. I will truly use this book to its fullest allowing students to appreciate not only the issues in this book but also providing them with the beauty of literature. This book will deliver the joy of reading.

It was okay.
In the book, If You traveled on the Underground Railroad, it tells you how fugitives got the Underground Railroad started and what they did on the way. One question was,"Why did they call it the Underground Railroad?" "A man named Tice Davids was running from his owner that lived in Kentucky. Davids swam across a river to get to a small town in Ohio. The owner was hot on his trail. Davids suddenly disappeared whn he went around a turn. The owner searched everywhere he could have been, but he couldn't find him. He gave up and went home. When he got back, he told his other family members that he "must've went on an Underground Railroad!" The book tells you what happened if the slaves and conductors were caught. To find out more, read this book.

How to Escape the Underground Railroad

An excellent source of UGRR info for children and adults!
As the director of an Underground Railroad museum, I am always looking for clear, concise materials for the public to use. This book is being added to our new education program, for use in elementary schools in our area. The facts are presented in an easy-to-read fashion, and anyone, adult or child, is able to pick up valuable information without being threatened by the reading level of the book. The text is not condescending in any fashion, yet moves easily enough for a 5-year-old child to sit through a reading of the entire book and ask questions provoked by the material being presented. I would recommend "If You Traveled the Underground Railroad" to anyone interested in giving children something of substance to read. We sell these books in our museum and cannot keep the supply high enough to meet the demand!

Excellent Teaching Book!
This book was wonderful to use in the classroom with my Fourth Graders! It is written so that they can easily read and understand it and provided realistic illustrations to support the text. While it is not a book that can be easily read in one sitting it goes along well with our study of the Westward Movement and was enjoyed by all the students. It was conducive to group discussion and covered all the aspects of the topic that the students wished to know from the question "What was a covered wagon?" to "Could they recieve mail along the way?". It lent itself to projects and assignments for the students.

...If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon
We are homeschoolers, and are studying U.S. History. We used this book to compliment our studies of the Reconstruction and Reform Period. My children enjoyed the layout, as well as the information. They liked it so well, they usually read ahead of the scheduled assignments!

A must-have for those "not-so-confident" in the kitchen
An uncomplicated guide to main courses, salads, desserts, etc. Gives variations on basics (i.e., roast chicken recipe also offers Oriental Chicken, Dijon Chicken, and Chicken Kiev). Super cool guide in the back shows user how to Stock a Kitchen.

One thin cookbook to teach you everything!
This is a fantastic book! It's great for rank beginners, because it presents 25 basic recipes with clear instructions, and for each one it also gives three variations, many of which change the nature of the dish completely while keeping the same fundamental procedures in place. It's an excellent way to learn how cooking works, not just how to make particular recipes. More experienced cooks will also find this book useful and inspiring, as it has such solid, reliable recipes, and suggests ways to vary them to great effect. Also includes cooking terms, fundamental cooking procedures, and lists of foods and utensils you should keep on hand.

Witnesses to War: Eight True Life Stories of Nazi Persecution

A fuller picture of persecution in WWII
I was impressed by this book because it presents the suffering of people in WWII without staying completely focused on the Jews. The Nazis were willing to murder anybody, who, for any reason, did not fit in to their ideology or view of the world. With this book, there is a more clear demonstration of that - yes, a couple of the stories are about Jewish children, there is also a story concerning the plight of a Polish child, one about a gypsy girl, and a child's view of the horrendous occurence at Lidice, Czechoslovakia. The stories about the Jewish children are also varied; one escaped via the Kindertransport, one story was about girls hidden in a convent, and another whose father was featured in a very famous photo that made it out of Germany to tip people off to the kinds of things happening there.

My main gripe about the book is fairly minor. I enjoyed the pictures and the background given to each story, but every once in awhile I felt that the text was patronising. Mind you, this is targeted towards a juvenile audience, but if one believes that the children that will be reading this book are mature enough to deal with this type of material, they probably are not in too terrible need of some of the simpler explanations, and I found these a bit distracting from the focus of the text.

Overall, it is a very good book that serves a subject that is often neglected.

Witnesses to War
The book I read was Witness to War by Michael Leapman. This book was about eight true-life stories of children that were sent to concentration camps, and others who the Germans tried to make into German citizens. The German police and army shipped off some kids to different places so they did not get caught. A lot of the Jewish people that got sent to camps were well-respected people in a society of German. Most of the people in this book are Jewish but one of the kids is a gypsy. I think this book was very good. It is very odd that people can treat others so cruel.

Best book ever!
When I read the book "Witnesses To War" I couldn't put the book down. I was disgusted by the true Nazi persecution. The book is about collections of the true life stories during the holocaust and the Nazi persecution . One of the stories I liked the best was about the Polish children being tested for Germanization because it was twisted that the Nazi's could capture a child .The parents were helpless. I liked this book a lot because I am interested in the holocaust . It's well written and makes you want to read more aobut the holocaust.
