The Penguin Leunig
Michael Leunig is on of the most brilliant writers ever.
Living in the australian bush, drawing for over thirty years have given Michael a great humour and drawing style.
He doesn't show off, he keeps a simple cute style(all though he CAN draw more complex) This books contains great drawings, great poems and funny stories and characters.

A combination of joy, desperation and nonchalance
This book resonates in the soul like a magpie on a Sunday afternoon near the childrens adventure playgound. If the book were made of fingers it would be no less touching.

Happiness is a Leunig Book
First of all it should be said that this book is NOT out of print. It's freely available in bookstores in Australia and it is something I give as a present to people who mean a lot to me, or whom I sense WILL mean a lot to me.

How to define the eclectic enigma that is Michael Leunig? A poet, a painter, a singer of the soul's deepest longings - all of these and more. Leunig is best known as a cartoonist, but instead of lampooning politics, satirising society, he holds up a gentle spiritual mirror of the soul to the human condition. In doing so he whimsically touches what is fundamentally spiritual in all of us, and makes us better people into the bargain.... witness this little gem, accompanied by a gloriously simple yet moving sketched cartoon...

When the heart is cut or cracked or broken do not clutch it let the wound lie open

Let the Wind from the good old sea blow in to bathe the wound with salt and let it sting

Let a stray dog lick it. Let a bird lean in the hole and sing, a simple song like a tiny bell. And let it ring

Let it go. Let it out. Let it all unravel. Let it free and it can be A path on which to travel.

Leunig himself provides that path and reminds us, while we smile through our tears, that the history of happiness is as old as each of us. We just have to reach inside and find it.

A book of cartoons and poetry both whimsical and meaningful.
Laughter is medicine for the soul, and this collection of cartoons will not only make you laugh, but touch you deeply as well.

Michael Leunig is highly gifted: he's not just an artist or cartoonist, but also a clever poet and uniquely insightful social commentator. He is able to communicate profound critique of social and other issues in a way that I have seen no other cartoonist do. Even the slime of political issues takes on a sublime perspective through the uncanny vision of Leunig. I can only guess from my appreciation of his work, that he has immense life experience in the realms of human relationships, introspection, spirituality and more. He has been reported as stating that through his work, he attempts to give voice to the voiceless.

Leunig also does many cartoons that are pure whimsy, and there are recurring characters in many of his works. Mr. Curly and ducks appear to be among his favourites. His cartoons appear regularly in the Melbourne Age newspaper. There is a regular following of his work, and sometimes, there is lively dialogue in the Letters to the Editor praising or arguing for and against his work.

The Travelling Leunig was first given to me as a gift around 1992, and so impressed me that I have bought several more of his books. I have found them to be immensely enjoyable, amazingly insightful, and thoroughly touching. I am by no means exaggerating here, and Michael Leunig is right up there with the short list of people I would like to sit down with over a cup of coffee and biscuits.
