Easy Activities
This book has simple activities that are designed to help give a child the necessary perceptual motor-skills needed to succeed in school. The activities are in 8 categories: motor, visual motor, ocular motor, vision, laterality, directionality, sequential processing, & simultaneous processing. The things I had to purchase were a chalkboard & metronome. The other materials needed I had on hand; examples are index cards, dictionary, rulers, paper, pencil, colored chalk, etc. These are actual activities you can do and not just theoretical. They are simple and easy-to-follow. I am doing these with my dyslexic son & plan to use with my not dyslexic younger daughter.

Excellent Resource
I purchased this book to help with my 3 year old son who just didn't seem to be learning things very well. The book has helped tremendously! I would recommend it to all parents of young children. It is easy to read and the exercises are easy to follow and do with young children. Dr. Lane explains well the reasons for different activities, which has enabled me to incorporate more learning activities into our "normal" routine.

Oil Pastel: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist
This is an unusually thorough book. If you can get your hands on a copy, you should do so. Unfortunately, it is out of print. The publisher is Watson-Guptill and the book was originally published in 1990. The ISBN No. is 0-8230-3310-4. Here's why the book wins my vote:

It has a ton of pictures of finished art works done in oil pastel and in mixed media, using oil pastel and other media. There is a section which tells of the lightfastness of different brands of oil pastel currently on the market so readers can see actual pictures of brands exposed to sunlight for 3 months and how the sunlight does/doesn't alter the colors. There is also a "nitty-gritty" section describing the characteristics of each major brand available on the market currently, as of 1990 when the book was written, but these are the same brands available today (creaminess, hardness and what you can do with each). There are detailed diagrams of different methods of using oil pastels, broken down into steps, so readers have step by step directions of how to use oil pastels in a variety of ways. There are many ideas for composition using oil pastels. The author, Kenneth Leslie, makes it a point to tell readers exactly how each of the many works shown were developed in oil pastel (e.g., by direct observation of objects such as in a still-life, or by using photographs or collage, etc.) and on what kind of supports (e.g. which grounds to use on paper, museum board, masonite, wood, etc.) There are just lots and lots of pointers about using the medium of oil pastel. Many ideas of using oil pastels in concert with other media serve as a springboard for individual ideas. For example, I read a section of explanation and then, quite easily, I could mentally figure out how to apply the techniques shown to my own work. This will be my bible for doing oil pastel painting.

Guitars from the top shelf
Blue Guitar is a sweet tribute to Jimmy D'Aquisto as a guitar maker and to Scott Chinery as a collector of fine instruments. The impeccable workmanship of the instruments in this book is a small oasis of patience and craftsmanship in a fast-food culture. It provides an insight into the type of people that create these wonderful pieces, as well as the zeal of one person whose passion was acquiring the best of examples of this art form. You don't have to be a guitar junkie to enjoy this book. It's fun to read and real easy to look at.

"The Blue Guitar", by Ken Vose
The book is an execellent reference to anyone interested in the making of guitars, and to know who presently, are among the "elite of luthiers".

Scott Chinnery, an avid collector of guitars, was instrumental in re-igniting a passion for the revival of the arch top, semi-acoustic guitar. It was Chinnery, that approached twenty two of the finest luthiers, and inspired them to the task of creating an eighteen inche (wide) semi-acoustic guitar. Chinnery also requested the guitars be made "blue" - all luthiers used the same color, yet were free to formulate and apply the color as they indivudally desired. The results and finding of this work becomes the topic of the book.

The text presents a challenge to continue the work initiated by these craftpersons. It is "inspirational", and very informative.

the Best of the Blues
What does the ultimate blue archtop guitar look like? 22 master craftsmen were posed with this challenge: "make an 18 inch wide acoustic archtop guitar...make it any way you want, as long as you make it blue."

A virtual competition ensues as the top 'luthiers' get down to business creating their personal vision of the finest blue archtop. Scott Chinery, a collector of fine guitars had amassed a collection numbering over a thousand pieces when he had the notion to commission the best craftsman to make a blue archtop. You don't even have to love guitars to appreciate the wonderfully varied interpretations that came about as a result. The pride of craftsmanship shines through on each and every meticulously crafted piece. This is a handsome book richly filled with photographs of these masterpieces in blue, and the talented men and women behind them. This book is a gem for the price.

worst chem book ever
This is the most horrible chemistry book, I have ever seen. There are so many mistakes, there are not enough examples with clear explanations, and it looks as if the authors spent about 10 minutes trying to organize this. I have used other chemistry books, and not to say that they are perfect, but this book really is horrible. Try and spend a couple dollars doing research on how to organize. When you introduce a topic in chapter 4, do not say it will be explained in chapter 11. Explain all topics the first time you mention them!

The Best Out There
This is truly the best g. chem. book I've seen, out of about 6 or 7. It's not too complex, but not too simple either. For pre-med students a must -- it helped me score a 14 in the physical section of the MCAT

Finally a chemistry book worth having!
I have a B.S. in Chemistry and tutor it at our local junior college where this book is the one being used for the course. I have never found a general chem book good enough to keep until now. The text and examples are very clear and easy to follow and understand. The pictures and sections on chemistry in the real world are enlightening. I was so impressed with this book that I actually bought it to keep for my own library, and I didn't need to do that because I was required to have it! The only thing I would like to see them improve on the next edition is the index. This is done as a combination glossary/index and there are many things that I have tried to find in the index that are not listed. So get a better indexer on the next edition!

Mainly for Eiseley enthusiasts
While I think this is a very good book, I would not recommend it to someone who has not read much of Eiseley's work. There are fabulous essays in this volume; on the other hand, some are not so good and some are unfinished. If you want to get acquainted with Eiseley's work I'd recommend "The Star Thrower" before you read anything else. If you become a real Eiseley enthusiast, then this book will be worthwhile to you.
