Great Understanding of the Colonial Tobacco Coast Culture
I bought this book for genealogical purposes, but found that it was a very enjoyable book to read and explained the culture of the Tobacco Coast to me better than several other books I have read. There was also enough detail that I felt I understood much more of the thought processes of the people I have been tracing and has fleshed out their surroundings in a very complete way.

Excellent Scholarship and Good History
Professor Lee gives us a scholarly review of a microcosm of the culture and weltanshauung of a relatively backwater Maryland county headed into revolution. That such scholarship is targeted at a minor topic is truly impressive. If anything, it gives one pause as to whether the investment in academic research in history is overdone. For here is a representative picture drawn, but at such detail it must have taken tremendous resources. One wonders what topics suffer to give such infinite color to a tiny leaf on a giant tree. But the beauty of scholarship and solid writing for those interested in this topic, such as genealogists or revolutionary war scholars, will find this book a delightfully sharp and detailed portrait of a place whose most might town was the now unremembered "Port Tobacco."

Convolutional Coding: Fundamentals and Applications (Artech House Telecommunications Library)
Published in Hardcover by Artech House (1997)
Authors: Charles Lee and L. H. Charles Lee
Amazon base price: $113.00
Average review score:

Simplest explaination of Convolution Codes in print '98.
It builds the convolution codes from basic arithmetic. Takes it advanced enough to build your own codes or understand others codes. Also explains related essential cocepts e.g. coding gain. It is the clearest book on coding that I have found out of 10 on the topic. I wish there was a similar one for block Reed-Solomon/BCH codes also.

A must read for anyone interested in doing business in China
Dr. Lee covers a lot of subject matter in Cowboys and Dragrons. This is not a travel or "how to" book. This is a hands on reference piece that aims at breaking down cultural myths between the U.S. and China that have historically promulgated misunderstanding between the two countries. Dr. Lee emphasizes the necessity of having a historical and cultural understanding of the United States and China before entering into or embarking on business dealings between the two countries. He poses philisophical questions to the reader in order to uncover fundamental truths about human relationships. Furthermore, he provides practical advice on how to make a U.S./China business deal work to the benefit of BOTH sides.

If you ever wondered why Chinese bow and avoid direct eye contact versus the American norm of firm handshakes and looking someone squarely in the eye or how to better understand the nuances of business language among both cultures, this book will explain it all.

Cowboys and Dragons will surely become a must read among business school students, entrepreneurs, executives, and individuals that plan or or are currently doing business in China. Keep this book handy.

Great, hilarious collection of works!
In a nutshell, this book had me cracking up non-stop! I read it on a trip to Europe. My plan was to sleep on the plane. I should have never brought this book then! It kept me up and kept a smile on my face. My neighbors all asked what I was reading, and I shared the book with them. It is GREAT!

Killer

Rockin'&Rollin'&Ramblin'!!
This book reads as if it was started with a great burst of energy, lost steam somewhere along the line, was abandoned, picked back up,dusted off,put down again, and then finished off for a payday...I had great expectations for this work as Charles White was involved, the Killer was clean and sober and was eager to tell his story (set the record right) after his ex wife (and probably only true love) Myra came out with Great Balls of Fire which was made into the movie of the same name.Unfortunately,well... we get a rambling, somewhat incoherent hodge podge of rehashed stories that have been told and retold for the most part, and Jerry Lee really adds nothing new to them. There are some worthwhile nuggets;Jerry's brief profiles of some of his contemporaries,a few words on his substance abuse problems, and some great color commentary of touring life during the early days, however, what becomes apparent is that most of the time EVERYONE AROUND the Killer seems eager to tell jerry's life for him and he either lets them because it serves his purpose ,or he is resigned to this type of treatment,or maybe he is so crispy that he just doesn't have it in him.Whatever the reason, this book is definitely NOT THE story of Mr. Jerry Lee Lewis as it should be told.
This book is still a riveting read simply because one never knows where the rambling might lead! The frustrating point is knowing that this effort could have been so much more IF the Killer could have reached down inside and demanded from himself and from those around him that he be heard.

A trip to the Salons of Paris
A catalogue/book of a 1986 exhibition organised by the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco with the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

An invaluable resource for anyone interested in the Impressionist period in modern art. The book begins with essays entitled: ' The Impressionists and Edouard Manet'; 'The New Painting:Concerning the Group of Artists Exhibiting at the Durand-Ruel Galleries'; 'The Intransigent Artist or How The Impressionists Got Their Name'; 'The End of Impressionism';

The works are arranged around the catalogues of each of the Impressionist exhibitions in Paris (1974, 1876, 1877, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1886). Each section includes readable essays on the particular exhibition, and reproductions of and notes on the paintings represented in the San Francisco/ Washington exhibition , as well as reproductions of the catalogs of the original Impressionist exhibitions.

The quality of reproductions is very high, given the limitations of still enabling the book to remain affordable to the generalist reader.

There is a wealth of detail in this comprehensive work. The book would be a valuable addiditon to any secondary school, college or public library collection.

Highly recommended.

Varied Problems Yield Good Refresher
This collection of numerous problems in both old atomic theory as well as (slightly) more modern theory is a great review to students who may have taken introductory QM classes and need a refresher, or as a supplement to those students currently learning QM. The topics covered are varied and problems include complete solutions. Overall a good volume to include in any early theorist's collection.
