Ferdinandus Taurus Excellent for Reviewing the Subjunctive
Ferdinandus Taurus is a great little book just for reading aloud in class. But for a review of the subjunctive primary and secondary sequences, it is truly outstanding. The students appreciate the repetitive vocabulary (like English versions of the Doctor Seuss books), for it means they are able to concentrate on the sequencing of the Latin subjunctive clauses with the indicative main clauses. The pictures, the story, and an increased interest in the subjunctive; it just doesn't get any better than this!

An Entertaining Book for All Ages
This interesting book centers around the construction of the original Ferris Wheel, built for the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. It shows that America is unique in its freedom and opportunity for hard-working people from many different nations. I have read this book several times and have found it to be well-written and well-illustrated. I would recommend it for all ages.

Highly useful follow-up to BIRDING BY EAR
The second installment of the "By Ear" series is even more impressive than the previous guide. MORE BIRDING BY EAR has more wood warblers, sandpipers, and terns than BIRDING BY EAR and features the songs and calls of many of the most sought after bird species in Eastern/Central North America.

Once again, Richard Walton introduces each species and takes the listener through the various groupings. The birds are grouped based on habitat and the similarities of their calls. Walton points out key characteristics of each bird call to enhance the listener's learning experince. The handles he suggests for identifying each call are enormously helpful and enhance the listern's experience.

The birds featured on these discs are some of the rarer, hard to find species that can often only be identified by song. Rails, Empidonax flycatchers, cuckoos, kinglets, and a variety of waterbirds are inlcuded on the first disc. The second features around two-dozen warbler species (including the infamous waterthrushes) plus several of the less familar sparrows such as the Bachman's and Grasshopper. The third CD is comprised mostly of shorebirds, and finishes with habiat groups from such birding hotspots as Cape May. These groupings allow the listener to test his or her bird call identification skills. Sprinkled throughout the guide are species calls that tie up loose ends left by the previous discs; common loon, brown creeper, osprey, saw-whet owl, fish crow and blue-headed vireo are just a sample of the variety of species you'll find on this three disc set.

Along with the CDs, a complementry booklet with surprisingly good black-and-white illistrations is included. This helps the listener make visual assocations with the species they are hearing. Room is provided on each page for the listener to take notes on the various bird vocalizations. Page numbers for locating the birds on the plates in the PETERSON FIELD GUIDE TO BIRDS: EASTERN/CENTRAL REGION are also provided in the booklet.

MORE BIRDING BY EAR is great learning tool for experienced and novice birders alike. The rails and shorebird sections are very helpful. The second disc is packed with warblers. The authors have done a superb job at covering close to all the birds found in Eastern North America. Between this disc set and the previous one, listeners should be able to learn enough to identifiy most of the birds they can hear while birding in the East. Another great buy.

Richard K. Walton, author
Most birdsong CDs/tapes are lengthy "lists" of birdsongs. The "Birding by Ear" series is a unique tutorial that teaches you to recognise and recall birdsongs. If you want to learn to identify birds by their songs and calls this is the product for you! "More Birding by Ear" includes many of the Eastern warblers as well as shorebirds, flycatchers, rails and other groups.

The Story of Simpson and Sampson
This the favorite of all of the books that my mother read to me when I was a young girl.

It opens with in a setting during the days of knights and castles. Two twin baby boys are born, one was evil from the start and the other was pure and good. The pictures of the babies in their cradles, portrayed the destinies of each child. Showing Simpson content and sleeping and Sampson throwing toys and screaming. The story unfolds as they grow up and tells of their acts of evil and goodness. The illustrations are creatively done in a way that makes you feel drawn to become a part of this story written so captivating to young minds.

Outstanding look at the Navy fighter stars of World War II
The book presents a concise view of the navy's fighter force in the Second World War, with some of the best photos of the planes involved that I've seen. Mr Tillman's vast knowledge of naval history and Mr. Lawson's most comprehensive photo collection make this a must for those readers with a thirst for accurate presentation. The only criticism I can offer is that I wish it had been longer, with more photos and personal accounts of some of the participants in that great conflict. But, that is covered in other Tillman works about Naval aviation. All in all, a fine read and welcome addition to a growing collection of Mr. Tillman's fine offerings. It is especially fitting, I believe, that it is dedicated to the memory of Jeff Ethell.

An Interesting Story
The story of Ben and Me is a biography of Benjamin Franklin from the eyes of his pet mouse, Amos. While this book had some facts, it was mostly historical fiction with funny twists. I enjoyed this, yet i seriously doubt that all of Franklin's brilliant ideas were actually thought up by a mouse. This is a good book and have fun reading!

If you love mice you would like this book.

Almost perfect
In his effort to create a "simple explanation [of relativity] that anyone can understand" Einstein comes close to perfection.

His language is clear and lucid, and the thought problems he suggests in order to prompt his reader into understanding the faults of classical theory vs. the extraordinary coherence and power of the theory of relativity are downright fun. But make no mistake--this book is not easy.

The concepts behind relativity are difficult to understand and require some patience on the part of the reader. At times, this difficulty is exasperated by Einstein's desire to keep his explanations succinct.

I would start with Einstein's "The Evolution of Physics" in order to get a feeling for the general concepts behind relativity and behind physics in general before attacking this excellent but challenging book.

That having been said, I LOVED every minute I spent reading this book and happily recommend it to anyone interested in twisting their brain around some wild problems with wilder solutions.

Great for the young student of Physics
Great for the young student of Physics!

This is an excellent book, written in the "Master's" own style and faithfully translated from the German by Robert Lawson. The translation dates to 1920 and new readers may find the English a little quaint, but for all that, it is a great effort at presenting in "plain speak", the concepts of Relativity.

The book starts with a lucid explanation of the Train and Platform example of Galelian Relativity and then proceeds to highlight the incompatibility between the principle of relativity and the constancy of the speed of light. Without encumbering the reader with the Maths (found in the appendices) the ideas of time dilation and length contraction are discussed. The General Theory is developed via a fine example: that of an observer on a rotating disk.

This is a good complement to the overtly scientific/mathmatical books on the subject. Unfortunately,, despite its many qualities, just like many of the alternatives of this genre, Einstein's book does not fully succeed in explaining the complex concepts to the lay reader. Rather, this is a nice little book that will be suitable for a good calibre Maths/Physics student in the sixth form/high school.

Definitely brilliant !
Who's the best person to write a book on relativity if not Prof. Einstein himself ?
If you do not have a physics background don't be ashamed ! Professor Einstein presents a presumably difficult theory in a very clear and manageable way. Of course, there is a lack of formality but that is indeed the point. A person with any technical background can enjoy its reading and believe me, understand it as a whole. In particular, the reader can get a gist on the General Theory of Relativity without the sophisticated mathematical apparatus needed. I should venture to say that everyone on earth should read this book !
