As comic books go, Gary Larson's "The Far Side" series of books is one of the best ever in my humble opinion. "The Chickens Are Restless" is one of his best. The drawings and the captions he comes up with for his drawings, they are just hilarious! Especially when they have to do with animals, which is what most of the comic strips in this book have to do with. I wish he hadn't decided to stop this career. And here's hoping he comes back real soon!

Mutinous canines, alien-spotting rednecks, dung beetles, and all the assorted occupants of the spaced-out mind of Gary Larson are here in this fun-filled compilation.

Larson is one "acquired taste" that I am glad to have developed.

Gary Larson knows how to add humor to any creature on any planet

Wildlife Preserves, the tenth book in the Far Side series, is not quite as funny as the rest of the books in this series. That is not to say that it is not a funny book. There are several of my all time favorite cartoons in this book and an average Gary Larson is still far funnier than any other cartoonist in the world. However, there were not quite as many laughs as some of his previous books. I still like this book and feel that there are enough laughs to make it a worthwhile addition to the Far Side collection. There are also enough laughs for me to recommend it to someone who needs a good laugh.

Wildlife Preserves, the 10th Far Side Collection is a very informitive book. I bought it because The Far Side is my favorite comic strip and I have 10 others. But, I never thought I could learn so much from a comic strip. I found out about Cowmen Miranda and the woolly watermelon. I learned about when naturalists found The Seccret Chipmunk Burial Grounds and how the spitting cobras live at home. If wou want ace all you history quizes, this book will be helpful (It could happen).

Ha! Ha! Ha! Great stuff.

There's a Hair In My Dirt is a unique book created by a unique human about some (can I say it AGAIN?!) unique worms. This is not a book to be categorized or labeled or whatever. It's a book that intelligent (which covers a lot of ground) readers can read at a young age and enjoy for years to come. Humor is predominent in this "educational fairy tale." But the younger crowd can opt to throw away the educational part for the time being and jump into a barrel of laughs with Larson's drawings and his depiction of Worm Family Life. As the years go by, the growing reader may find more humor (irony, sarcasm, etc.) in the "educational, pontificating" parts. But, chances are, they will not be disappointed!

I'm certainly looking forward to reading the next Larson Picture Book. I wonder what he'll be serving?

Gary Larson is a comic writer that has a very wierd sense of humor. To understand many of his Far Side cartoons you need some degree of academic knowledge. The book centers around a young worm who does not like being a worm. His father tells him a story about a human named Harriet who loved nature. But, loving nature is different from understanding nature. What we see as being bad in nature,in reality, serves a good useful purpose and what we see as being good can really be negative. Plus, our ignorance of nature can be harmful, like when Harriet threw a tortoise into the water thinking it was a turtle. The father worm explains to his son that all things in nature has a purpose.

The book is funny and witty with Gary Larson's wierd sence of humor. The drawings will be familiar to anyone who has read the Far Side. This book can be a useful tool for teachers to introduce their students to how nature works. This book could be use as part of an introductory lesson for a unit on ecology.

Gary Larson expands beyond the single-panel comics of the "Far Side" to a full children's book. But, as you would expect, this book is not really just for kids. Anyone fan of the "Far Side" is sure to get a kick out of this book too. The story starts with father, mother and son earthworm sitting (?) down for a dinner of dirt, when the son complains about life as a worm. Father tells him the rambling story of Harriet, who loves nature even though she misunderstands just about all of it. This somehow leads to the dreaded moral of the story and the truth behind the hair in the dirt. This is a fun, yet educational, book for anyone old enough to have developed a twisted sense of humor.

Gary Larsen has to be the sickest, funniest guy on the planet! His parents must be just as sick as they raised him because, as a boy, they encouraged him to grow snakes, lizards, etc. in the basement of their home --- after he was allowed to flood it! (True story, according to a fingernail sketch of the guy which I read many years ago!) But back to his cartoons --- hysterically funny, droll, ridiculous and wonderful! His skewed view of our world is a delight, his drawings are as crazy (and wonderful) as he is and this universe will be a sadder, saner place without his wit and irony. Although he's been gone from the daily comic section of the country's newspapers for years already, I always held out the hope that he would return. If, indeed, this is his LAST calendar collection, you MUST order it and treasure it. DO NOT TEAR OFF THE PAGES AND TOSS THEM as I have been carelessly doing this past year. We will never see the likes of Gary Larsen again in our lifetimes!

Far Side always brings a smile to my face and to see this great calendar series come to an end is a sad event, indeed. For this last hoorah, Gary Larson made SIX different boxes for the day-to-day calendars. So there is definately the cow, but you may get a bear or humans. The box the calendar comes in has a flap that lifts open presenting a farewell from Gary. Inside you'll find the traditional day-to-day calendar in the plastic holder and instructions for setting it up. The pictures are all black and white except for every monday (and no, the last one isn't in color)and the quality of the calendar is top notch.

It's sad to see these calendars go but life will go on. But these calendars can envoke warm memories and make a day just a tad brighter.

The year 2002 has not been easy for me. Without going into specifics about the difficulties, I will just say that this calendar has had the same effect on me that the daily comic strip used to - it has given me a good laugh every morning and cheered me through difficult days. Thanks to this calendar, I can "pretend" that Gary Larson never retired. I'm still in therapy over the fact that this is the last edition to the "off-the-wall" franchise (just kidding). Seriously, I bought two copies of this calendar - one to read every day, and one to save for "old time's sake."

Anyway, I love this calendar and it is one of the highpoints of my day. I love this calendar because it gives me what all Larson products do - a look into a mad mad mind (I mean that in a good way) that will always give me a laugh. This is sardonic satire at its best! I love the detached and remote feel to all Larson's work. And I love the fact that if it weren't for just ONE thing wrong in the picture, everything would be normal. This lends the strip an air of credibility, you know, "It COULD happen . . . if only that weren't a COW cooking the bar-bee-que . . . if only that weren't a crocodile sitting in the livingroom . . . if only that weren't a sloth with the gun . . . etc." Everything is normal, except that ONE bizarre, unthinkable, and sometimes un-understandable element (I know I'm not the only one who has occasionally come across a Larson cartoon and wondered what the heck he was trying to say). The most bizzare (and funny) things in life are always the things that seem normal at first.

This book presents the first lot of cartoons from the widely syndicated 'Far Side' strip. You will find hilarious cartoons, completely strange cartoons, rebellious cows, ducks, mugger bears, tales of cavemen, Scientist hijinks, all of which leave you gasping for air whilst you try to stop laughing. Recommended to anyone who enjoys the stupid facts of life. YAY!!

Maybe this book does not contain so many "hits" as others, but it is still a good old Gary Larson Classic. I am a huge fan of his work and I think it is worth buying and reading. Among other things to find out, what REALLY happened with Dorothy and co., when they enetered the yellow road.

The UBH is fairly informative, and I found the info on the early church and canon formation very helpful. However the theological beliefs of the author creep in a lot. In Revelation, for instance, he only treats the futurist view of interpretation as worthwhile, while dismissing the other views without any real evidence against them. I have found this book was very useful when I was a younger Christian, but now it basically sits on the shelf. I think the NIV Study Bible's notes and package are the better way to go.

This is the best example of the type of reference work that I could locate. I purchased it at retail price because it was readily available at that time. It has proven somewhat valuable in my research of the scriptures by its coverage of the archaeology and culture of its time.

Why doesn't the publisher get someone with new funny material instead of rehashing the same old Far Side toons. How many times can you listen to the same "toons" before your nerves are shot.
Please get someone with new material in there!... The bookstore humor section is the same over and over again. I want a single-panel cartoon like Speedbump, Reynolds Unwrapped, or Reality Check ...These are the 3 best cartoons on the market that I've seen

Just like how barbara phillips of NC hates seeing the same old things from Larson, I hate seeing the same old reviews from the same old people. Makes you wonder what is going on when someone writes two similar reviews for the same book, slightly different in languge, but promoting other authors. Does this person work for another publishing company or is she related to the other people? I don't know, but I do warn people to think twice about basing your decision to buy on customer reviews. You never know who is writing them. Maybe even this review will get posted.

This is a classic Far Side delight. The calendar is a great gift for friends and family and for yourself. I highly recommend!

For those of you asking "WHAT IS THIS?" I honestly have no idea what this is either. But, I'm willing to make a guess. I think this "assortment" is a set of all of the books in the Far Side collection. I'm curious if it includes the Galleries and the 10th aniversiary book, though. I'm telling you people out there, don't waste your money here. In fact, don't buy any of the books here, unless your very desperate. Heres the secret to getting your hands on all these Far Side books with as little money as possible. Go to used book stores! I found that people turn in a ton of these books, and there usually in perfect condition. You may think your saving money here at Amazon, but back when far side books were first coming out, the list price was $5.95, unlike the $7.95 today. So the $6.36 that Amazon offers doesn't save you that much. Someone jacked up the prices when Larson became popular. Anyway, at used book stores, they will charge you half the list price or sometimes less. I got my hands on some old ones, in great condition, for $2.50 each just recently. BTW I'm talking about the smallest type of Far Side books. Not the Galleries. I've seen them at used book stores too, but I don't recall the prices. I've nearly completed my collection. This is the poerfect strategy to get your hands on any popular newspaper cartoon books. I've nearly completed my collection. You may end up buying a few fresh and new, I did as well. Depending on shipping, I suggest making those desperate buys here. Trust me on this, it will save you big $$ (Don't get me wrong, Amazon is a great place to buy books, but not when your planning on a collection like this.) Good Luck!!

This is a great deal, because all of the Far Sides together make me laugh more than I ever have before. Gary Larsons wit and humor is just like Jerry Seinfield. It makes you want to get up and write your own book, and it is so funny and humor filled that it can be enjoyed by people of any age. I also reccommend that you buy the Far Side Desk Calendar. $416 dollars is a darn good deal if you ask me!
