I'm a CNE since Version 3.X. I have took a lot of test reading only the White book and practice. The results: I had to take test twice even three times before passing it. For the NW5 Update, I took the course and read the white book twice, but I also bought this book. The results: Passed the first time!! It's incredible how this books wraps all you need to know in order to pass the test. It is easy to read and give you clues of what to pay special attention. If you are studing for the update test, this is the only book you will have to read (you will need hands-on, as well).

I originally got my CNE back in 1994 - the 3.11 days. That was the last time Novell came out with a CCR (Continuing Certification Requirement) - the update to 4.11. That was the only test I flunked the first time and squeaked by the second time. Now I'm working in an NT environment and haven't even touched a Novell server in over a year. Needless to say, the latest CCR had me worried. I wanted to keep my CNE, but didn't want to spend thousands of dollars learning a NOS I'd probably never use. I decided to get Clarke Notes only and sink or swim. I'm happy to say I passed the test on the first try after two days reading and studying this book. Thanks, David! Now if we could only talk him in to developing a Windows 2000 curriculum.

The book is very easy to read and the author has even put in material to make it fun to read. If you want your professional reading to be as dry as a bone, that feature may jolt you. The book is a good general reference for NW 5 and not just for test-takers. However, the prospective test-taker should look at Appendix B. It provides the Novell test objectives and give the reference to the pages in the book where each objective is covered. If you've gone over the official text so many times that you're about blind, this explains the same things (plus more) in a very clear manner.

This book does just as the author claims. It chisels down all necessary knowledge of NetWare 5 CNA without allot of wasted words like most THICK Technical books, which I despise. I have worked with NetWare since version 3.11 and this book is accurate to the T. I also recommend using Big Red self test exam software to compliment this book for the serious CNA exam prep.

I just passed the NetWare 5 Administration test #50-639. This is by far the best book I read in preparing for the test. Simple, straight forward, and easy to understand. No superfluous BS, just what you need to know to understand NetWare 5 and pass the test. Definitely well worth the money!

I found this to be an excellant summary - good for reviewing and consolidating study done elsewhere - NB this is a study NOTE book - if you haven't done the CNA course or worked through some self-paced material then do that first. Also - this book is for exam 50-645 (nw 5.0) which was fine for me but be aware that it's on the retirement track now so you should probably go for NW5.1. I'm definitly going to search out "Clarke" material for further CNE papers

If you are looking for an in-depth, complete introduction to Gigabit Ethernet (both copper and fiber) you have found the right book. In about 500 pages the authors give a professional introduction not only to the Gigabit version, but other Ethernets as well, talking about network design, MAC layer, cabling, and almost everything you can expect from a book so named.

Compared with other GigE books, this book offers much better discussions on optical transmission and impairments. This will be great for people who likes to understand where certain optical interface and limitation are from.

On the network subject, it also offers clear and orderly description.

The book is compulsory reading for everybody with an interest in groupware technologies. It covers most aspects of modern groupware systems and successfully addresses all important technical, organizational and commercial issues. The depth and the details are exceptional, the informative and extensive approach is thoroughly convincing and highly recommendable. Although the book is taking a slightly more commercial view, it seems Coleman does for the late nineties what Ronald Baecker did for the early nineties with his landmark collection "Groupware and CSCW".

This is one of the few practical and knowledgable books about groupware and collaboration that doesn't loose the reader in details about the technology. It gives readers a top notch education about all these group applications that are supposed to help us be more productive. Since so many of them are showing up in Netscape, Microsoft and other main-line business applications, it's great to have an easy-to-use and really right-on tool. My only complaint is that the book is so big, over 600 pages. There's just a lot of information in there, but the chapters are very well organized and focused. I highly recommend the book

Iwouid like to find imformation about the telephone

"Ion" is one of many plays by Euripides in which he tried to show his Athenian audience what the gods were liked when judged by ordinary human standards. In this play, Apollo, the god of truth, brutally rapes a helpless young girl, Creusa, and then abandons her. Creusa has a son, whom she abandons in a cave; when she goes back to find the child, he is gone. Years later she marries Xuthus, a solider of fortune who becomes king of Athens. At the start of the play Xuthus and Creusa are childless and go to Delphi for aid. There they are told that Ion, a young temple servant who has been raised from infancy, is the son of Xuthus. Creusa, outraged that Apollo let their own son die but preserved the life of a child begotten by Xuthus on some Delphian woman, tries to have Ion killed. Of course, in reality, Ion is her own child, abandoned in that cave. Condemned to death by the Delphians, Creusa escapes Ion's vengeance by taking refuge at Apollo's altar. There the priestess presents the tokens that allow Creusa to recognize Ion as her own son. Telling him the truth about his father, Ion tries to enter the temple to demand of Apollo the truth.

There is debate over how much "Ion" reflects the noted skepticism of Euripides. After all, we can certainly believe that Creusa was raped by a human and that he child died in that cave and that the priestess who bore Ion was simply setting up a convenient fiction that would make her son the prince of Athens. However, I have always taken "Ion" as being one of the best examples of Euripides's cynical view of the gods the Greeks were supposed to be worshipping. Athena forestalls a confrontation between Ion and Apollo, but this particular example of deus ex machina certainly rings hollow. After all, Delphi is Apollo's holy place and if Athena's words are true, he should be there to reveal the truth to his son instead.

Clarke hits every topic on the exam without all the silly 'Super Hero' metaphors (thank you, DJ). If you're not familiar with the utilities (iManager, Migration Wizard, ICE Utility, etc...) there are whitepapers on the Novell Support Site you'll need as well. Also keep in mind that the NW6 support pack (currently 3) will supply minor discrepancies with the text in the book (really not a big deal). Armed with this book as well as the info above, you can probably pass this exam without STS or Transcender (I bought Transcender anyway 'cause it was cheaper than taking the exam again: insurance).

So, for what it's worth, I HIGHLY recommend this study guide!

If you are new to LotusScript do not buy this book. This is a reference book for LotusScript and Java classes and a very good one at that. The developer help files can be confusing at times and it always helps to have a reference book near you.

If you are an intermediate or experienced Notes developer this is a terrific book, I have it by my desk all the time.

If you want a book to teach you LotusScript but Practical LotusScript it's great!

First of all, if you're new to Domino, LotusScript, or Java - this might NOT be the book for you. On the other hand, if you're an experienced Domino programmer (LS or Java) that needs a quick reference without any filler, this is a good book to get. It's half LS, half Java, and it's got all the classes alphabetized so you can get at them right away. It's even got the new R5 classes like the ViewNavigator. I have it laying at my desk and use it all the time while programming. It's way better then the yellow or red books and has recently (almost) replaced Bob's book at my side. A wise investment for the causal Domino programmer and a requirement for the serious Domino programmer. Only thing I can complain about is that there be more examples that show how to use each property/method, but then the book would easily be 2x the size. I actually give this book 4.5 stars, but I rounded up cause Amazon doesn't let you do fractional scores.

Amazon only lets you put in 5 stars, this is a shame. If you are a Notes programmer, this IS your Essential Reference. I have found no other book that combines all of the LotusScript and Java front and back-end classes in such a usable fashion. The authors were kind enough to be concise yet descriptive while also providing many useful examples.

If I run into Tim or Dave at LotusSphere, I am definitely buying them a beer.

Well organized and written. I'm counting on this book to get me a passing score. I have read other CCNA books but fell short of a passing score by just a few points. When I heard the CCNA 1.0 was no longer going to be offered, I rushed to study and take the test. Big mistake #1. I didn't think there was much of a difference between 1.0 and 2.0 so I rescheduled (since I do have industry experience with switches and plus I was so close). Big mistake #2 (totally different test, I felt "green" like a MCSE in a CCIE's world). Out of $200 I was like...BUMMER. I invested in Exam Prep to fill in what I was missing. Now that I have finished this book I feel confident that I am equipped with the real deal. I am eager to take the test, it will be a great way to bring in the New Year. The review questions and hands-on projects are great (providing you have access to equipment). The coverage in WAN Protocols is awsome which happend to be one of my weak points. I understand ISDN now. EXAM PREP is the tool to put me over the top. Buy it, read it, and welcome aboard the fantastic world of "real" networking.

This book has a ton of good information about Cisco devices, the IOS and the many routed and routing protocols. Most of it is covered in real detail and is not really for those (who are) new to computer networking. I'd say this is a little of the advanced course although it does start with the beginning Cisco information you do need to have some decent backround in computer networking to be able to read this and pass the exam. All the different protocols which are on the exam were covered in detail here. It covered the IOS real well, the different parts of Cisco switches and routers and troubleshooting. The chapter on Access Lists covered the exam questions real well. I felt real comfortable and passed with a 92%. Warning though: The test is not easy and if you don't understand the material in the book, you won't pass. If you know the book and do the questions and exercises you'll pass. It's all in there.

I thought after finishing my MCSE last year I knew all about computer networks. This book sure opened my eyes. It's a smooth path from that curriculum to the Cisco networking world. It starts with the OSI model and moves into network structure then has a real good chapter on the different Cisco products: switches, routers, modular devices, DSL, ATM etc. Then it explains the Cisco IOS, how to program the router copy and transfer images, NVRAM, Flash etc. This was all well explained so I could move on with confidence. Next came the protocols, IP, IPX and routing protocols which I never knew existed, but learned well. The book finishes with lots of coverage on WANs particularly Frame Relay which was heavily covered on the exam. Then came access lists which were well explained and also covered on the exam. Simply put, this book had all the coverage for the exam and only having unrelated A+ and Microsoft training I was able to pass the CCNA on the first try. Word of warning though, don't take it lightly, study hard, the test is hard but the material is all in here. The CD is great to determine if your ready too.

This is an excellent book for those who are new to setting up LANs in their homes. It covers all of the essentials and many of the advanced issues thoroughly and in an educational manner. A good companion to this book (not a substitute) is Michael Wolf's "Speed! Understanding and Installing Home Networks". If you get both of these books you will be very well informed, able to install your own home LAN, share the internet, etc. Very readable, very useful, and very complete.

David Strom's Home Networking book is a must have. If you read it you'll get a good tutorial on how things work. If you have things that don't work you can use it as a troubleshooting guide. It is very comprehensive -- includes both PC and the Mac and numerious networking vendors. I recommend the book for anyone who wants or needs to know more about how to share computers and printers and files in their home.

Lots of books explain how to network your home. David Strom's "Home Networking Survival Guide" is better. Here's why: Strom doesn't look down on you like you are a "dummy" or an "idiot." Unlike some other books, the tone in which Strom writes is never condescending, never preachy. It's just you and Dave, sittin' on the patio in the back yard, sippin' lemonade, watchin' the clouds float by, and having a good ol' talk about sharing PCs and Macs, files, printers, and that all important Internet connection. Dave puts his arm around your shoulder, says "come with me," and he shows you the way. He won't make you feel stupid. You've become his partner, not his lab experiment.
The chapters are concept-based: home wiring (or wireless) choices, sharing files, sharing printers, sharing an Internet connection, using e-mail, intrusion security, and protecting your family--from their own actions.

Dave walks you through choosing and installing a solution, but he doesn't just dictate a list of steps to follow. He takes the time to explain why. Too many books just say 'do this' without educating the reader. What good is that?

In summary, this book is like that blue blanket you had as a kid. It makes you feel secure and empowers you to conquer, well, home networking in this case. Next time your cable company or phone carrier says you can't have several computers on your cable or DSL connection, you'll know better.
