A must have book
I found these book extremely helpful from the aspect of exploring various CSCW issues for mobile informatics. The book touches various facets of life that mobile nformatics would affect: from economic and social to the kind of technical infrasrtucure. Overall the book is very nice.. there have been some other studeis that have taken palce recntly..but this book (or the version that i have) doesnt touch upon..nevertheless it is a great that should be a part of refernce for mobile informatics!

Stopping Spam

No userful information
Yes, ORDB does recommend this book for server administrators with open relay. However, this server administrator found no information in the book that would be helpful in closing an open relay. Complete waste of money and time.

A dated book.
It is an old book so some of the info is rather dated.

However, it is good for a historical perspective and it gives an ok overview of the whole concept.

It will not give you answers to what you need to do as much of the spamming techniques have changed since it's publishing.

For example HTML based spam, spam fighing software, and Baysean formula came after this.

It was a book for its time but it has passed.

Awesome book with real solutions
Don't let the publication date scare you off. This book is timeless in its applicability. It covers all types of spam very nicely, and is acutely aware of the potential speech-related issues content-based filtering can bring about.

This book offers many options for combatting spam on the user and system levels, and makes sure to present the best way to stop spam: by teaching responsible system administration and shutting down open mail relays and public NNTP servers that allow posting.

I have had to admin mail and news servers for clients in the past, and I personally receive about 30 pieces of unwanted email daily. I've been particularly interested in the Procmail-based "friendly sender database", and the book presents the solution in a clear, concise fashion.

If you're tired of receiving more spam than real email, or having to really look hard for high quality, on topic postings in your newsgroups, then I strongly recommend this book.

Falls short of the orginal.
I hesitated a long time before buying this book, doubting that it could add anything to the great short story by Eric Frank Russel it was based on. Eventually I decided to buy it anyway because I loved the short story so very much and in years of searching had not been able to get a copy of the original which I had borrowed from a friend.

Though all elements of the orginal story where there, what I feared was proven right, the extension from short story to novel became boring. The lengthening of the story without really adding anything to it made it awkward rather than captivating and in the end I paged to the latter fourth of the book, no longer able to finish it.

The sad thing about it all is that it's not a bad story, just one that does not manage to capture the grandeur of the original. My advice: If you read the orginal story, don't read this one, try to get hold of one of the `flinx' books instead which are far more worthwhile.

enjoyable to read!!!
Classic Russell material, fun and witty, using social and political avenues to defeat bad guys who could almost be government but portrayed as aliens instead!! If you dislike big government and being controlled by it, you will really enjoy this book!

A Pleasant Read
The story covers what sorts of things might happen when different cultures, er "species", encounter each other. War, obviously, is one possible result. The really interesting aspect that Foster delves into is fanatical narrow-mindedness. The antags in this story can't really see how to make use of their resources to prosper. The protags very much can, and do. Also, the protags are very open-minded - in more ways than one. Plus they are quite intelligent and quite well-equiped to deal with intergalactic relations. Prosperity in this book, doesn't come from power or wealth but in a state of mind, a noble pursuit, and the willingness and ability to communicate and cogitate.

The plot is very upbeat and yet at the same time not without its share of suspense. The characters are interesting and likeable.

Full of cliches, predictable story, flat writing
One of the most boring book I've read.

My favorite of his
This is my favorite Alan Russell. I Just love Am in his first mystery. It is absolutely hilarious but the mystery is well done also. The "Bob Johnsons" are the best! They are reminiscent of Sharon MacCrumb's BIMBO'S OF THE DEATH SUN. I definitely recommend this one!

An average book
It's a good book on main battle tanks, but the title has nothing to do to what's inside.Actually there is only main battle tanks, and not even one support vehicle described inside. Each entry is accompanied by some black&white pics and front/side views(don't know where the top one has gone). There is only an overview of each tank's capabilties and a long list of all the variants. It kind of ressemble the Jane's recognition guide but lacks all other armoured fighting vehicles.A good book, but certainly not a bible on the subject.

Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish!
I'm a computer science student and last semester I had a GUI course where this HCI book was in the curriculum. It has to -without a doubt- be the worst book I have ever read. There is absolutely nothing useful in it, whatsoever. Nothing in that book will help people design better user interfaces for their programs/web pages. You'll be much better off simply with the use of common sense!

Even my tutor did not like this book.
I am currently studying CS at university and one of my classes in HCI. All I can say about this book is that even the tutor for the class hated this book - as did all the students - so much so that the next semesters' book is going to be something else.

Steer clear of this one
I had the misfortune of having to buy this book for a night course I took for personal interest. As a an engineering professional, I found the ideas of having a customer throughout architecture, design, test completely impractical. Other impracticalities include assessing usuability by hiring an expert in cognitive behavior.

I had hoped the book contained information that would help with the practical design of gadgets and/or GUI interfaces. No examples of good and bad, what the public in general wants, how this is affected by demographics, etc.

This book contains hardly and only a small amount of technical, non-subjective material.

The book is also not gender neutral and uses "she" often when they refer to a non-specific user/person, which got on my nerves!
