I read the me nobody knows, and performed in the play while i was in college. It inspired me to become a teacher. To listen more to my students. To reflect on how unequal our society is. I grew up in NYC and related to my character. If you ever get the chance, go to lincoln center. they have an original tape of the original play. The songs reflect the true feelings of young children growing up in the city. This will make it well worth the read and the hunt for the book.

I read this book in the late 1960's and kept it on my bookshelf as a treasured item ever sense, until in 1996 when I lent it to a Sociology Professor and it was stolen -- along with his car. Because this book had such a profound effect on me when I read it, it remand on my bookshelf as a constant reminder of the inequalities of life. The Me nobody Knows was also a tool that motivated me, a young NYC girl living in the same surroundings that these young writes explained in their works, to forge ahead and create a better life for myself. [...] how can [anyone] so naively suggest that these people, of which I am one are "weaker Humans." Do you assume that socioeconomic standing endows one with strength. I find myself surrounded now with people who have been given more opportunities in life afforded to them by money, class and status, and yet many of them dwindel it away by becoming selfish and myoptic in their views of others. Those in unfortunate situations such as poverty do not choose that life and are often swallowed up by it like a quicksand that allows your head to stay afloat but maintains a hold on the rest of you. Another book that follows in this idea of the struggles of children growing up in poverty is Down These Mean Streets by Piri Thomas of which I suggest to readers who found The Me Nobody Knows enlightening.

I read this book when I was in third grade, which was almost 26 years ago. Perhaps other editions were created since the mid seventies, but this book has existed for at least three decades. I will never forget how powerful the message in this book was, and how it taught me at a very young age to be extremely thankfuklfor the many gifts that have been bestowed upon me. It also makes people realize that talent and the expression of such talent is not reserved to just the affluent, but that messages of youth are pretty consistent across social classes. As a teacher, I would love to locate a class set of these books and share it with my 6th graders. Perhaps the influence of such writing will inspire yet another generation to write of "The Me Nobody Knows...."

Most of what professional psychotherapists read professionally is either theory or research. Rarely are we privileged to get such insight into the personal and professional development of other therapists. In this volume, a distinguished group of mostly psychoanalytically oriented clinicians openly discuss the evolution of their beliefs about doing therapy and the sometimes subtle and sometimes radical changes they have undergone. Sometimes the personal revelations are incredibly moving as in Simon Budman's discussion of his aortic aneurysm and its effect on his understanding of what he calls "existential and spiritual issues." There are also some surpises as in Sophie Freud's confession that were she younger she would seek training in the type of solution-focused brief therapy practiced by Insoo Kim Berg. Frequently I found myself nodding with recognition as with Carolynn Maltas' struggle to integrate (apparently) conflicting perspectives such as the family systemic and the psychodynamic. Finally, I appreciated the emphasis of Lillian Comas-Diaz on the importance of understanding culture in working with clients. While the book is not representative of the entire field of psychotherapy (only Arnold Lazarus mentions cognitive therapy, for example), I think therapists of all persuasions will find this book fascinating.

Every so often a book in my field (psychology) comes out which I believe is so outstanding I would recommend it to every professional (and layman as well)interested in, or practicing, psychotherapy today. This is such a book. Drs. Shay and Wheelis have gathered a collection of personal accounts by truly gifted clinicians who offer extradordinarily varied, articulate and moving descriptions of their personal development as psychotherapists. By selecting such a diverse group, the editors have met their ambitious goal of chronicling the process of change in the field of psychotherapy while at the same time providing depth and insight for the reader in a very personal and meaningful way. What was most appealing to me about the presentations was the compelling manner in which personal events and choices influenced not only the individual lives of these clinicians, but also the development of the field itself. By choosing this method of description, which was clearly not intended to be a comprehensive empirical review of the development of psychotherapy, the editors have provided us with what I believe is a far more significant history than such a 'clinical" approach would have. This is an outstanding book which I highly recommend.

This is a fascinating look into the journeys that therapists have made into the post modern world. They have had to learn to deal with the real world, as well as with its ambiguities,the world in which they and their patients live.It is a must,for readers who value openness and honesty and who enjoy a look at the ideas of those whom we ask to help us manage our lives with comfort and dignity.

A must read. Anyone searching for that positive influencial attitude in affecting their students should read this and apply the techniques. Believe me, this book will inspire the most jaded of teachers.

Pathways is a really good book. I mean it. It helped me a lot.

PATHWAYS reaches the reader with practical, realistic ways to approach learning and growth. Though aimed at the secondary music educator, the book's philosophy and constructive ideas are
useful to all who teach or parent today's teenagers. The author's style is conversational, humorous, direct and extremely entertaining. It is a "how to" book that does not lecture or condemn. PATHWAYS illuminates teaching and enlightens the reader.

Steinbeck...move over! Scalia creates a thoroughly enjoyable story with vivid and unforgetable characters. He draws the reader into a world unlike our own but with a universal message~be careful what you wish for.

I know my high school readers (including reluctant readers) will be captivated! Great selection for a 'class read' -- lots to dissect and discuss. A gem.

"Pearl" was a finalist in the Foreword Magazine 2001 Writing Competition and a winner in my book! It is a great companion piece for Steinbeck's work, but able to stand up on its own. The story is simple but compelling. The style is easy and poetic. The author shows compassion and understanding for his characters. From the beginning you'll keep you turning the pages to an exciting conclusion. Try it, you'll love it!

This dark and brooding novel explores the heights men will go to when greed and cruelty consume them. Memorable, well defined characters add to the suspense and forward momentum of the plot. Written with the style and voice of the earlier work, this extraordinary novel is a perfect compliament to Steinbeck's short story and is a MUST for every high school English curriculum. A masterful achievement!

... In 2002 this is a book that people who seek viable solutions for 2002 problems and challenges should read. The author carefully shows how what worked in 1700, 1800, 1900 wont and shouldn't work in the 21st Century. That just as women were forced to bear children in later decades there are now better screening programs and preventatives to make that no longer the case.

That just as slavery was once the norm it no longer is and in large part because non-religious people were able to show that it was inhumane and wrong. That as times change so must belief systems. That just because something worked in the past doesn't mean it does or should in 2002. That there are some ideas that are moral and ethical that transcend religion and are held and were held long before religion became the dictate. That free men need to be truly free.

As one of those who edited this book for Mr. Daleiden, I take pride in the extent to which the book clarifies, for the lay public, some of the nuances of the ethics debate that has raged among philosophers, and spilled into a broader public arena, in modern times. Of particular importance, in the "culture wars" debate in contemporary America, is Mr. Daleiden's emphasis on the secular case for a solid relationship between rights and responsibilities. All too many secular thinkers seem to abandon emphasis on this relationship, thereby giving the would-be theocrats a golden opportunity to present themselves as the indispensible bastions against an otherwise inevitable "slouching towards Gomorrah". While Mr. Daleiden and I differ on some nuances regarding Rawls' theory of justice, this book is a boon to those who suspect that a principled alternative, to the relativism of the Left and the absolutism of the Right, is the most appropriate course for humanity. It shows how ethics are relative to human desires, but absolute insofar as humans can and do reach consensus on what is desired. In this respect the book is in the best tradition of Enlightenment thought, and is an overdue response to the smear campaigns so successfully waged against the Enlightenment by both Left and Right.

An excellent work which successfully takes on the monumental task of updating ethics and morality derived from antiquated sources - tradition, revelation, fiat, etc. - to a system based on reason. The reduction of criteria for determining the validity and efficacy of a moral precept to three - Mr. Daleiden's "three harmonies" - will allow any rational moral leader to evaluate a system of morality without the need to appeal to the supernatural or to convoluted logic. One can only hope it will be read by those in positions of influence.

You don't need to read the entire book in order to benefit from it. Specific topics are covered using Checklists to make sure you don't miss anything important. Highly recommended!

I got this book a couple weeks ago and have already used it as a reference multiple times. The topics are indexed well, finding to the point information. Not a tutorial, but rather a very big reference.

Mike Aquilina shows how the Mass of the early Church is substantively the same as the Mass that you attended the last time you went to Church. A great feature of this book is not only the work of the Church Fathers but toward the end of the book Aquilina recreates the Sunday Mass of the early Church based on the Fathers.

By opening up the works of the early Church Fathers on the Mass, Mike Aquilina demonstrates the astounding continuity of the Mass celebrated today and the Mass of the early Christians. The extensive excerpts from the Church Fathers also show us the tenacity of the Catholic belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. By reading this book, Catholics will view their attendance at Mass in a different light as they realize how they are in direct continuity with our ancient ancestors in the faith. Non-Catholics will see how the Mass celebrated today is the direct legacy of those early Christians.

What I find fascinating is Scriptural typology for the Mass based on Old Testament foreshadowings or prefigurements. This book's early chapters discuss some interesting typology and the corresponding antitypes, which are relevant for understanding the Eucharist. Moreover, the excerpts from early Christian writers are an excellent resource or reference.
But Old Testament symbolic connections with the Holy Eucharist (centering on wheat and gold) are explored at even greater depth in the book "Why Matter Matters: Philosophical and Scriptural Reflections on the Sacraments" (authored by David P. Lang and published also by Our Sunday Visitor). Chapter 2 titled "Why Wheat Bread?" is especially relevant for the Eucharist, but also Chapter 3 ("Why Grape Wine?") and Chapter 4, part of which treats the association between wheat and olive oil (signifying the Holy Spirit), are pertinent to this whole topic.

As an owner of the second edition, I looked forward to the revised update. The quality of the information is high. However, I was disappointed in the quality of the publication. Some of the graphs and charts seemed "muddy" with hard to read notations. Also, the binding and paper quality seemed to have slipped a little. This seems to be a trend. I own a number of texts from the 1950's. Their binding and paper quality is much better than that used today.

Handbook is a term which implies comprehensive coverage of a given subject, so often a term which is misapplied. Not so in this case however, this book is without a doubt one of the best sources of information on pumps and related system components currently in print. For anyone requiring a comprehensive pump resource, this is it. I would definitely recommend this one for the engineering library.

I am one of the four editors of this handbook. Please note the correct number of pages is 1765. The 2nd edition has the 1280 pages presently described. After the name Charles Heald add that he is an editor also. The 2nd and 3rd reviewers are referring to the 2nd edition of the handbook as they are dated before the 3rd edition was printed.

I have worked in outdoor environmental education, so many of the activities suggested in this book were known to me prior to reading it. Therefore, I was a little disappointed in the book b/c I had hoped to get fresh ideas. I would reccommend this book to any and all parents/teachers who have not worked in EE. These activities are the standard in teaching kids/adults about nature. I look forward to reading Sharing Nature with Children II, which I have also purchased. I feel it will have new activities to inspire me and many others who love nature.

Joseph Cornell is the author of Sharing Nature With Children and Sharing Nature With Children II . This two volume set showcase nature studies and appreciation activities that any parent, teacher, or child care provider can readily engage in with children. Ann appreciation for the complex and interrelated life forms that comprise the exosphere of their environments is a solid basis to establish a life-long enthusiasm for nature and the out-of-doors, as well as a lasting commitment to environmental issues and concerns. Each volume is available independently, but school and community libraries are urged to acquire them both for the nature activities and environmental reference collections.

I had no idea that Joseph Cornell had written a book for children. This is a rare find. (It ranks up there with Robert Walser's little-known treatise on horse-grooming, or Arthur Brand's book of stock quotes.) There are stories here of hope and joy. You really get a sense of Cornell's engagement with a visionary romanticism when he encourages the reader to "let the child see into the world of nature, for there they will find a balm for their sorrows, a calm for their heart, and a palm against time." Cornell filled his boxes with the doodads of youth, and it's wonderful to find him speaking to children without any form of mediation. A must.

Trigoboff tells a very good story. He's got a way of describing the streets, the monumental setting of New York City, and the criminal underbelly that learks beneath the survice. In the Shooting Gallery, he conveys a very compelling story. Along with the criminal action and the description of big city corruption, Trigoboff weaves a large amount of biting and incisive social commentary into the story. The book is also rich in black humor, with some very amusing scenes.

NYPD Alvin Yablonsky returns in this book. He is faced with the political murder of a reporter, one who has crusaded against powerful interests for years, in the employ of a liberal paper. The cities limosine liberal establishment is outraged, and storm clouds soon surround the investigation. Yablonsky is faced with a political administration that doesn't exactly want the case solved, a shadowy force willing to kill anyone close to the case, and a group of liberals that don't trust the police at all. All together, it makes for great modern urban noir.

The only reason I didn't give it the full 5 stars is because I found the actual mystery fairly obvious, and I figured it out almost right away. Still, it was a very entertaining read.

Trigaboff has indeed done it again!! A terrific read.

Alvin Yablonsky is a New York detective assigned to investigate the murder of a Skinny McPherson, a reporter for "The Village Guardian", a left-wing newspaper with strong connections to the Big Apple's elite of among the literary set and their judicial allies. Yablonsky runs afoul of the corrupt "powers that be" in the drug infested East Village neighbor. It takes a tough minded, quick thinking, street savvy cop like Yablonsky to go where he must go and do what needs to be done to identify and then bring the guilty to what justice can be done under the circumstances. The Shooting Gallery confirms Joseph Trigoboff's as a tightly disciplined mystery writer who plays hard but fair with his readers and his characters. Also highly recommended is Trigoboff's earlier Detective Alvin Yablonsky novel The Bone Orchard.
