Not for the Pianist
This edition has the full orchestra music as well as the piano music. But, all staffs are so tiny that you really can't do that much with it.
Amazing!
The Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos are among the hardest ever written. This book does a good job of showing the composer's intentions. Its inclusion of the ossia version as well as the simplified version of the solo part helps the reader to compare the two. Also, the orchestra parts are easily read and well spaced. There is never too much or too little on one page. It is a great book for conductors, pianists, or anyone else who loves the Rach concerti. This is a must have for any serious piano concerto fan!
The most beautiful and dificult piano concertos
The beauty of the second concerto and the strength and skill level of the third concerto is very difficult, it's impressive that Rachmaninoff compose this beautiful concertos after his psicological problem. Sergei Rachmaninoff one of the most important pianist in the world begin your musical development when he was a young, and create a dificult and magician world of all the piano lovers. I'm a music student. I'd like to be a conductor and this edition provide me of the magic of the three first piano concertos of Rachmaninoff. The first time I open the book a greatest world of sound came to me. It's a very good choice if you are a student of conducting or you are a music lover. It's Amazing!!!

Bad book
I did not like it. It is a bad story. Wolfs are not bad like in the story. Peter doesnt listen to his grandpa, so it is a bad example.
Good companion to the music
If you are familiar with the Prokofiev symphony, this book makes a good companion to the music. It puts into visual images the story of Peter and the Wolf. What I like most about the book is that, in the end, the duck lives. The ending varies somewhat depending on the version of the recording or book. In this book, it's a happy ending, which is better for younger readers.
We use the book by itself sometimes. Other times, my child will read along while we listen to the symphony.
A great book for little people who love music!
Our children, 3 year old twins, love the music of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. In searching for an age appropriate book to show them the musical instruments that play each of the characters, we found this one illustrated by Ian Beck. Not only are the illustrations lovely, the colors and clothing of Peter, the hunters and the grandfather are interesting to a child. Also, each page shows the instrument played for that part of the story (find it in the box around the text), and in the back a page illustrates each instrument. We cannot recommend this lovely book enough to parents of young children discovering the beauty of music!

In-depth on theory
If you're already at a high level, this is the book for you. I found it a little deep for someone relatively new to the subject.
nano
Very good book. To understand it you need to have a lot of knowledge in science. If you like astrophysics then you will like this.

Very bare edition of two great complex concertos.
The music is fantastic, being the most popular concerto repertoire of Russian origin, but the edition assumes the reader some sort of Russian professional. Right away one notices that there are very few fingerings noted, and altogether I have found maybe one editor's note on execution in the entirety of the two concertos. The edition contains no introduction to the music, no informative synopsis of any sort, no helpful background history on the composer's methods, reasonings or motivation for the music to aid the interpreter, nothing at all, in fact, but the notes themselves. Not even a photograph of Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky to identify the name with. This lack of support for the performer is considerably below the standards of any serious edition. Unless one is well-prepared with some amount of collected knowledge of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky, and with the experience of having listened to each of these concertos, the edition will leave you stranded. But, then again, it is great music one must have.
2 Great Russian Concertos
A must to an aspiring virtuoso's repertoire. Rachmaninoff was the peak of piano style and complexity, his first big hit being the second piano concerto. Tchaikovsky wrote a magnificent virtuosic piano concerto included in this book. You can hear the opening bars almost anywhere even today. From the lengthy, intimidating cadenza of the first movement, to the last over-hand octave run, it is a beatiful piece of piano literature. If you are serious about the piano, you must have this volume.

Very Good Book
The book is well written but not very extensive. It points to the applications right from the beggining and it is certainly of great value for students and engineers already engagged with Balanis Book on antenna theory. I strongly recommend Makarov's book for training students with a strong numerical methods background on electromagnetics, as a prerequisite before taking the course.

A collection of Photos of the Su-25
This book would certainly have created an impression when it first came out in the early 1990s but today there are many and more informative books on aircraft of the former USSR. It is essentially a collection of extremely clear photos of the Su-25 in all its versions.
Sergei Prokofiev: A Biography
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (1987)

Too glib and superficial to be informative!
I read this book when it first appeared some ten years ago, having read much of the other work on P. (books by Israel Nestyev, Victor Seroff, etc.). Indeed there is a lack of good literature on P. in English. Unfortunately, Robinson's book is sadly written-down and dumbed-down for a sub-TIME-Magazine reading public. It is not necessary to do so to write a good, readable, un-academic biography (compare the superb bio of poet Marina Tsvetaeva by Viktoria Schweitzer). So this book wasted a fine opportunity: its evaluations of both life and works are simplistic. Robinson claims to be "above" the ideological divisions of Cold War Prokofiev scholarship (e.g. pre-Stalinist vs. Socialist Realist Prokofiev), but he does not engage this problem at all, at least not in any thoughtful way, and blurs over it with bland cheery platitudes. Disappointing!
Well worth reading
Harlow Robinson's book is excellent; well worth reading. He strikes the right balance between the composer's personal charateristics and the body of his musical creation. The book is rich in detail, yet to-the-point; it is objective, yet reflects the complexity of this sometimes very unpleasant genius. It is perfectly comprehensible for the interested non-expert who has invested a good deal of time listening to Prokofiev's music, and seeing his movies, ballets and operas. As a Russian speaker familiar with every day speech and everyday life in the Soviet Union, I can say that Mr Robinson has a keen understanding of that culture, right down to having a very fine ear for transliterations. The composer is the Beethoven of the twentieth century: the one who has created the musical language which is so much a part of us that we take it for granted. Robinson brings us the man and the mind behind that language.
A core addition to Music History supplemental reading lists
Sergei Prokofiev: A Biography by Harlow Robinson (Professor of Modern Languages and History, Northeastern University) is an exhaustive, detailed, scholarly, and documented account of the life, times, inspiration, and personal history of acclaimed Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953). A handful of black-and-white photographs and a brand new foreword and afterword by author Harlow Robinson enhance this reprint of the most thorough Prokofiev biography to be found in the English language to date. A superbly written, insightfully informated, and ighly recommended for anyone with a keen interest in the evolution of individual musical greatness as reflected in the life and work of a seminal European composer, Sergei Prokofiev is a core addition to any Music History supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

disappointing ending
After opening this book and seeing the excellent pictures, descriptions of the instruments and explanations of the correlation between the characters in the story and the instruments, I was very disappointed with the ending referring to the duck still alive inside the wolf. Most other versions of the story have the duck miraculously appearing safely at the end, an ending much preferred by my younger students.
Peter and the Wolf
The author has divided this book into three sections. The first section is devoted to the instruments and the characters they represent. The second, and main section, is Dewhirst's retelling of the story, which is more enjoyable for my children because of the slight deviation the author takes. Finally, there is a brief biography of Sergei Prokofiev, the composer of the piece.
A very strong point is the inclusion of an audio CD of the piece, narrated by Leonard Bernstein.

review of Foundations of Fluid Mechanics With Applications:
This book presents the basic concepts of continuum mechanics. The material is presented in a tensor invariant form with a large number of problems with solutions. The book integrates the use of the computer algebra system Mathematica, and contains a large number of programs on the disk that will help clarify the concepts of continuum mechanics.(taken from the author)

MEMS and NEMS: Systems, Devices, and Structures
Published in Hardcover by CRC Press (18 January, 2002)
Amazon base price: $99.95
Average review score:
Incoherent
Some of the latter chapters do a detailed mathematical treatment of MEMS and NEMS devices, its good if that is what you are looking for, but it was hard to believe the text is written in english at times it is so incoherent. It was so bad I wouldn't finish reading it, thankfully I was able to find it in the library so I didn't waste any money on it.
Poor book, don't waste your money buying it!
Too mathematical in content... The author floods the book with useless math that you can easily derive from classic textbooks. Only the first 3 chapters are more or less ok but the references to websites and bibliography that he makes are much better than his own textbook... This book is useless to experimentalists and to people who want to delve into NEMS. Buy his earlier textbook instead which is much more detailed and which contains a lot of useful information!
