An example for us all
Louis Martin was a prosperous businessman who used his life on earth to build up treasure in heaven. This book gives us a complete picture of the Father of a Saint, from his marriage to widowhood, from a man who taught his children to imitate Christ to the man who is hospitalized due to memory loss and confusion. This biography shows that holiness in everyday life is possible and will inspire all to lead better lives.

A Gnostic Enlightener!
The book clearly goes to show that St. Martin is taking a gnostic stand when it comes to how he looks at this world, compared to the other world, or the material and the spiritual world. As he writes:

This world, where we believe we are, but are not. The other world, where we believe we are not, but where we actually are.

He goes on to describe the fallen state of both this world, and the fall of man, and the importance of work and methods of how to regain the primordial divine grace, how to be a Gods minister while on earth, etc.

For the sincere Martinist will I warmly recommend this book, it's probably one of his best works.

Sincerely

Paal E. Vevle

A Monumental Exposure of Corruption
This is another masterpiece by Martin Gross, the modern master of muckraking. In his book " The Political Racket" Gross exposes the greed, corruption, dishonesty, and downright criminal actions of the political class. Gross exposes the gifts, perks, pay raises, and abuse of campaign finances that pervade modern politics.

While reading this book one is enlightened, yet outraged at the collapse of public service, honor, and citizenship by our elected officials. Gross brings forth the total sham of the current campaign finanace system which is nothing more than legalized bribery. He shows how the political class elevates themselves above the average citizen through perks, abuse of funds, expense accounts, and assistance from lobbyists.

He provides some proposals to clean up politics. One os a National Primary for the Presidential campaign therby minimizing the ridiculous influence of the New Hampshire and Iowa, Abolition of the Electoral College, replacing it with a run off election, and an amendment regulating campaign donations by banning all donations except from indiviuals. A great, great book!

A Quality comparison
The late Louis E. Lomax (1922-1970) wrote this book shortly after Dr. King's assassination. He traces the path of both leaders. He shows the forces that brought the 2 leaders together on many issues. He also show the opposition forces to these men that materialized into assassins. I recommend that you read this book.

And the world started getting smaller!
This children's book is an account of the famous French aviation pioneer, Louis Bleriot (1872-1936) who was the first person to fly across the English Channel (on July 25, 1909). The book won the 1984 Caldecott Medal for best illustrations in a book for children. IT is an excellent book for use in a discussion of history, particularly the history of aviation.

The story of the first man to fly across the English Channel
Of course there were important aviation pioneers in between the Wright Brothers and Charles Lindbergh, and "The Glorious Flight: Across the Channel With Louise Bleriot, July 25, 1909" tells about one of the more important ones. In 1901 Louis Bleriot had made a fortune off of his invention of an automobile searchlight. Out for a drive with his family he sees a great white airship over the city of Cambrai. From that day forward, Louis Bleriot had but one wish: to build a flying machine. This charming book by Alice and Martin Provensen follows this quest from the development of the "Bleriot I" (too small for anyone to sit in) to the "Bleriot II" glider until finally with the "Bleriot VII" Louis had an aeroplane that could really fly. Then the only thing left to do was to prove what an aeroplane can really do and win the prize for being the first man to fly across the England Channel.

The story being told is simple and straightforward, but it is the artwork that young readers will find so captivating because it conveys the sense of time and place so well. However, it would have been nice to see what some of these planes looked like before Louis cracked them up. Still, this is the simple lesson of perseverance and the courage of your convictions told in simple words and with memorable illustrations. It is also good that young readers learn that there were actually famous aviation pioneers who did not live in the United States.

Remember: It is only seven years until the 100th anniversary of Bleriot's flight. Bet you sometime rebuilds the "Bleriot XI" and tries to duplicate his feat.
