A great reformer written from an honest perspective, well aware of our own culure... another great one for young and old alike!

I have read 3 or 4 biographies of Knox in the past ten years. Stanford Reid's *Trumpter of God* is considered the standard. But Wilson's is by far the most engaging.

Wilson has not attempted a comprehensive biography. Instead he hits the milestones and highlights what made Knox one of the most interesting figures in Western history. Wilson is very pastoral -- he makes contenporary, practical applications from Knox's that the reader will find very challenging.

After I read this book I bought three more copies.

The authors and contributors to this book worked deep in the fine details of Houston's past. So much of it has been lost to the ages, but with Houston's Forgotten Heritage, it almost comes back to life through the fine photographs of the opulent homes and even the log cabins. It is a joy to show this book to many of my "old-timer" neighbors, who remember a building here and there, and even the old fixtures, appliances, and ways of life. We should all be grateful to the authors of this book for reminding us of our glorious past.

I started reading out of a mild curiosity about the man who wrote "Monstrous Regiment of Women". By the end I was fascinated and appalled...Ridley has a lot of respect for the reader's intelligence, and doesn't stint on the ghastly details that made some people (at last) revolt against theocracy in Elizabethan England. Tends to remind Americans just how much we are "missing" , the cure for nostalgia over those days.

The most charming and informative book on the Scottish Presbyterian reformer John Knox ever written.

Meteorologists' book wins visuals award

Kyle provides the reader with a detailed and insightful history and analysis of John Knox's personal biblical and political thought. A major focus is Knox's belief of himself as an Old Testament prophet and the role he plays in the conversation among his contemporaries regarding the issue of violent resistance. Also provided by the author is a discussion of the ongoing historiographical debate surrounding the issue of Knox's doctrine of resistance -- what exactly it was, when it began and who influenced him. I found this text to be essential in my own research on John Knox's life and would highly recommend it to anyone that is interest in his life and also anyone that is at all interested in the lives of the Protestant Reformers.

Many modern protestants refuse to use Catholic Bibles because they contain these texts. What this book proves is that early protestants believed in their authenticity and it is only in the last hundred years or so that these books have been removed from protestant bibles. However, most of the introductory essays are so opinionated as to be almost useless.

So often we act as if the only Bible canon dispute was between Catholics and Protestants. We leave the Orthodox with no complete Bible as the editions of "Bible with Apocrypha" have only the Catholic/Protestant books. This book includes texts for both Greek and Slavonic Orthodox and the one "appendix" accepted by the Greek Orthodox.

So the articles prefacing the texts are written as dogma rather than history or theology ... who cares? At least now I can have a truly complete parallel Bible for Bible studies.

Footnote: I am not Orthodox but some texts accepted only by the Orthodox as canonical appear as antiphons in Catholic liturgy.

This book isn't necessarily a "life of Paul," but rather a look into certain aspects of his life. It looks at the differences between the letters of Paul and the book of Acts pertaining Paul's journeys and life. Easy to read book. John Knox did a great job explaining why he discusses the points he does. The book hits broad topics such as the career of the apostle and the man in Christ. Each of which is broken down into finer detail.

If you're the ultimate policy wonk on 2nd Amendment law, you'll want to read this book just for John Knox's insights into the character of Justice McReynolds who wrote the decision in U.S. v. Miller, 1939. Unfortunately, Knox was no longer clerking for McReynolds in 1939, so we miss the inside story on that landmark decision, but after you've read this book you'll better understand why Miller makes so little sense.

A book about a lesser known aspect of the failure of Johnson's "Great Society", "Stinking Creek" fairly describes the tug of war between a government that tries to "help" and an independent and sometimes proud culture that doesn't really want it. The book is filled with real people whose personalities are more richly and fully described than in any Dickens or Jakes novel. Although dated, the book portrays the bridge between the Roosevelt relief attempts and current welfare programs. Very readable.
