David Faber book was the most outstanding story I had ever read. By reading this book made me realize that I live one of the greatest years in history. David has been my encouragement to live without hated to someone who has done wrong. One of the parts in this reading that touched the inside of my heart was when he described the killing of his parents, brother and sisters. The way that I found this book was through my cousin, she said that she will never forget the suffering and hatred that Germans had towards the Jewish people. I recommend all teens to read 'Because of Romek' this book would make them realize that now we have the greatest opportunities in life. I encourage my comrades at school to read this book; they would see the world differently as we see it now. I would like to meet Mr. Faber someday. I give this book five stars.

My girlfriend and I had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Faber at a recent book signing. Seconds after introducing himself, he is ready to pull up his shirt sleeve to show you a grim reminder of his past. His arm still bears the numbers, forcibly tattooed on him by the Nazi regime. He then pulls open his book, lovingly pointing to his mother and sisters. With a soft break in his voice, he then describes the moment he found them lifeless, piled on top of one another. We bought several copies... and have come back to purchase more.

The book does not disappoint, written in a narrative format that is easy to follow and gripping to read. His work leads you down the path of brutal history, following his family as they are forced into slave labor, rounded up into Ghettos, and then ritualistically hunted by the Nazis. He makes a pact with his mother to survive the horrors, and through it all, he somehow does. Reading the book, you realize that he had a higher purpose in life, educating future generations about the atrocities that no man or woman should have to endure.

After meeting the man and understanding his past, one can only thank God Mr. Faber lived to tell his story. It will change you forever.

I couldn't put this book down, once I picked it up. This true story, is a well written account of a young boy's life in a German concnetration camp. This book was hard to read at times, because you can't believe that a human being would treat another human being this way. It made it especially hard for me to read this book, because David Faber is my next door neighbor, and the nicest man you could ever met. This book should be required reading in every school, so we all know what really went in the Geramn concentration camps, and to make sure this horror will never happen again.

Whether you're a reader, a writer, or a dabbler, you'll surely find plenty in this lovely collection to please your mind and lighten your spirit. Not one of the essays is longer than 2000 words, and many are only a paragraph or three in length. Yet each is a little sparkling gem, a nugget of pure gold. There's one by Kathleen Norris (already known for her lyrical spiritual writing) about rain that just takes the breath away. Each, in some small way, connects us to the common pulse of humanity running through the veins of the world around us.

So many of the stories in this book are just so poignant, so special, so.... ! They are like individual little works of art.

I could not put this book down. An aspiring writer, it filled me with fire to get back to writing in my journal--noting details of the day's people and events with new passion and belief in my own observations. So many of the pieces in the book are wondrous, but I especially liked INTO THE STORM by Jerry Ellis which is from his book, WALKING THE TRAIL, about his 900 mile walk along the Cherokee Trail of Tears.

I am not Suzy Homemaker, but I like to eat well -- as long as the food preparation doesn't take too much time or effort. The recipes Elliott includes are tasty and just as easy to fix as the title indicates. This lady knows what she's talking about and she makes it easy for domestic duds to eat well yet live a life outside the kitchen. Hooray for Virginia B. Elliott!

Chatty, easy to read. This warm writer/cook talks about her family with love and includes easy receipes that save money and time in the kitchen. Browsing through this book is like having dinner with a woderfully wild family. The author lives in Naples, Florida. The chapter on "Four Legged Chickens and Rabbits With Wings" is a must! After my mom's visit on the 4th of July, I felt compeled to update my review.

Very chatty and easy to read. She is a warm writer/cook. Talks about her family with love and includes easy receipes that do not cost an arm and a leg. It is like having dinner with her and her family and..."here is how to prepare this meal". I ought to know, I am her son, and her meal suggestions when I was in college in Califorina kept me fat and sassy.

An object lesson in how to cut to the chase; an example of tiny bites of beautiful writing; the art of the flash essay. By whatever name you call it, In Brief is proof that a piece of writing sometimes needn't be more than a paragraph or two in length to move readers and give them something profound, funny, enlightening, or beautiful to take away with them. This refreshing collection of teensy personal essays is a real winner.

This is a great book if you like to read but you never feel you have the time. These stories can each be read in a matter of minutes. This was a textbook for my creative non-fiction class and I think there are some great examples of the creative non-fiction format. The only downside I would say is that most of the stories are of a serious nature, so while the stories are short, I wouldn't call it 'light' reading.

I find this book an excellent companion to Kitchen's and Jones' first book on the creative nonfiction "short" entitled, In Short: A Collection of Brief Creative Nonfiction. The evolution of creative nonfiction and the "short" is apparent in these pages. No longer is it mandatory that a literary journalist or creative nonfiction writer "immerse" the reader in a person, place or thing. These pieces of creative nonfiction show that writers can make a simple journal entry, letter, or, for that fact, an email, stand on its own -- that even the smallest episode in our lives, or simple everyday pictures we've taken with our mind's eye, can have "symbolic realities." As a person who reads and writes prose and poetry, I find the brevity, and yet complexity, of the works appealing. Mary Oliver, who I've enjoyed as a poet, turns a poetic list of items she finds at the beach into a prose piece on beauty and existence. Kimberly Gorall turns a brief childhood conversation with her mother into a statement about womanhood. William Heyen uses one simple paragraph explaining the habits of an insect to an analogy on creativity and imagination. A bright high school senior, Janice Best (editor of Elan), uses an ingenius email format to try to explain why she writes. All of these "shorts" have a similar element -- they start with detail -- an intense focus -- and they end making a statement about our human existence. I have been liberated by the form presented in these pages -- and plan to teach college students using this book as a reader. But I believe any one who enjoys learning about the 'human condition' will enjoy this book. It's a quick read, but the impact of the material here lasts a long time.

This cookbook is wonderful and has recipes for all the comfort foods a tummy desires, including pot roast, meatloaf and macaroni & cheese! It also has directions for side dishes to accompany the entrees. I have used alot of the recipes and everything came out great!

even if you are able to take classes with Lauren, as I was. Just bring your book to have it autographed! Having this book in your kitchen is really like having your own private cooking teacher standing at your elbow. The recipes are clearly written, but what's more important, they are not just rehashed versions of recipes in other books. They are unique and delicious. If you make the banana bread pudding, and everyone you feed it to doesn't swoon, you need new friends. Learning how to easily slice an onion and cut up a chicken is worth the price of the book alone. If you love to cook and feed people, this cookbook is a very worthwhile addition to your collection. I promise, you'll be buying it to give as a present to all the cooks you know.

It's nice to find a cookbook written with passion and creativity. This is no run-of-the-mill cookbook. It's filled with hundreds of simple, easy to use recipes written with style, wit and passion. It's actually fun to read!! And so simple to use. A beautiful book to cherish and use for years to come. MOVE OVER, MARTHA STEWART!! Lauren Groveman is the culinary creator/advisor for the new Millenium! Buy this book! It makes a great gift for everyone from Gen Xer's to Seniors!

Lauren Groveman must have read my mind when she wrote this book! Somehow she does it all with every piece of information a busy neophite appreciates as well as the sophistication one aspires to for impressive meals and desserts of every kind.

The "Tips from a Teacher," "Time Management Tips" and "Q&A" inserts save time and frustration and have increased my confidence that culinary genius is not just for the pros any more! Ms. Groveman's personal touches and philosophy make me feel as though I have a private gourmet cooking teacher -- like a genie in a bottle -- on my kitchen shelf. :-)

I bought this as a gift for a friend. He shared it with me after reading it cover-to-cover. Great info for anyone concerned with historic preservation. Not quite the "handyman" book I had expected but nonetheless it proved to be some worthwhile reading.

This book was required for an architectural conservation class which I am currently enrolled in. I have found it extremelly helpfull. Unfortunantly I bought this book at the bookstore for a lot more money. The author gets quite technical at times, however they give you quick insights that are at once complete and easy to read. This is definantly a very affordable guide for home owners, designers, and preservationists of all sorts.

It has excellent, very detailed section on ingredients and general rules of Italian cooking methods. I wish this section had been included in Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking to make the book more detailed reference. My suggestion is to buy Essential (probably you already have one if you are reading this comment) and read Kitchen at your local bookstore.

My very first impression as I opened the book was that the lettering was too small and very light. When you're cooking and are referring to recipes as you go along, big, bold, dark print is a lot easier to the eye especially as one gets older.

Just wondering why -- this point was not taken into consideration when the print was chosen. There was even a write-up on the special print that was used, though I found it to be inappropriate and rather impractical.

Also, I was about to make her pot roast recipe -- why does Marcella require us to use "chopped,canned,imported,plum Italian tomatoes" -- all 1-1/2 tablespoons of it? Why so little? Is it really worth opening up a whole can for that little amount? Why not just use the plain fresh plum tomatoes then?

Just wondering -- if it was a typo or incorrect, unedited material.

This is an excellent and wonderful book! While other Italian cookbooks tend toward fanfare and no substance this book is full of great recipes (I have tried about 20 of them and recipes were easy to follow and dishes are full of flavor. Each name of the recipe is listed in Italian and a American name is given (e.g. Fileto col Pamigiano, Tenderloine Fillet with Parmesan Cheese, hot red pepper and parsley). If you are looking for a good Italian cookbook easy follow with great recipes this is it. I have 60 cookbooks and this is one of my best.

You get a sense of this book's priorities by reading its subtitle: "A Kitchen Entertainment and Cook Book." 15th century recipe translations and 19th century recipes are scattered higgledy-piggledy. (A phrase that dates to 1598, according to the Oxford English Dictionary.) There are lots of good historical recipe books out there -- choose one of them instead.

What a wonderful work. It must have taken many arduous years to complile the type of historical material that can be found in this collection. The original illustrations add greatly to the well laid out recipies accompanying the various methods and ingredients for the time period. What a shame this volume is out of Print (Hint.) No self respecting Chef should be without this key Historial work!
