A must for theatre buffs
Hilarious yet often sad true tale of the author's incredibly frustrating run of his stage play Legends, starring two honest-to-goodness stage divas Carol Channing and Mary Martin, who in real life gave their stage characters more than a run for their money. Greedy producers, bickering stars, hostile reviewers, backstage manipulations, it's all here, presented in good humor by Kirkwood, a vastly unsung writer, unfortunately long since deceased. This was his final book. A good read in itself, and sure to provoke laughter and empathy from anyone who has been involved in theatre.

This book truly an American Grotesque
This book should be considered a novel of fiction rather than non-fiction. It is a very interesting book if one has never done a full study of the Garrison investigation. Much of the information contained in this book is inaccurate, and when reading at the very beginning, he tells which side he is on, and rather than bring about the truth, he only brings forth evidence in which will side with the defense, leaving out very pertinent information. This book is in the category of "plot or Politics" By Rosemary James, and "False Witness" By Patricia Lambert, whom all attack Jim Garrison. One must look at the sources in which they use, and when you look, you see that the sources in which they use is reworded to fit their account of the investigation. Don't take this book seriously if you are seeking the truth!
Government tyranny
This book ought to interest a wider audience, who are concerned about civil liberties and abuses by government agencies. In this case, Clay Shaw was hounded by Jim Garrison, who announced when indicting Shaw that he Garrison had no case, but he expected Shaw to commit suicide, thus proving his guilt. Shaw did not. Shaw was found innocent in less than an hour by a jury. On the Monday following, Garrison indicted Shaw again for perjury, Garrison had a crowd picture showing Shaw and someone else whom Shaw had declared under oath he didn't know. Garrison produced a picture in which the two appeared. but were not talking to one another! It took another 2 years and an order from a federal judge to Garrison to stop harassing Shaw. Shaw died broke from all the court costs. .... Yes, this book should be reprinted and have the wider audience it deserves.
Behind the scenes of the only JFK assassination prosecution
In the late 60's, New Orleans district attorney, Jim Garrison (played by Kevin Costner in the Oliver Stone move, "JFK") indicted businessman Clay Shaw for his alleged participation in a plot to assassinate President John F. Kennedy. A true and bizarre story told by a reporter covering the daily happenings of the trial. Although the author's bias is evident due to his personal liking for the defendant, nonetheless, his insightfulness into the legal wranglings is incredibly interesting. This book may have limited appeal to only those keenly interested in the details and history of the Kennedy assassination. If that is the case, you won't be disappointed.

i left feeling disappointed
at first i was excited to read this book, it's been my mother's favorite for years. i laughed outloud at the main character, who seems to have every bit of misfortune going his way. just when it seems like things cant get any worse, he finds out he's being robbed over and over by the same man. he snaps. he decides he's going to catch this thief all by himself.
after a crazy and comical ordeal the robber is tied up in his kitchen. it was kind of odd when the two characters started a friendly relationship. by the end of the book i had two pages to go and JUST DID NOT WANT TO READ ANYMORE. i finished it - finally - but it felt like slow torture.

my advice: read the first half and then make up the rest of the story using your imagination. i promise it will be better that way.
A favorite from my youth
I am now 36 years old and I read and reread this book when I was in my mid-teens. I love this author and think, after a lifetime of reading novels, that he was a unique and under-appreciated talent. This book is funny and goes off the deep edge, which is great. It is not for the tame of heart or the morally judgemental types. A big part of its charm, for me, is that it takes people of questionable morals and questionable intentions and shows their humanity, and their complexity. Many of Kirkwood's books have undercurrents of homosexual content that is left unresolved, or unqualified. I like that about it too.
What breaks you? What happens then?
I found this one of the best books I've read.
The focus of the book is an average bloke, hit with a very unusual set of grim cirumstances of loss.
He breaks, but he has a stranger to take out his frustrations out on. This is a highly comical, yet very serious study in Sadism vs. Masochism vs. relaity.
To enjoy this book, you have to be prepared to examine yourself. And end up being neutral considering circumstances of grief, odd forms of friendship and sexuality. IOW: you have to be prepared to accept the emotional undercurrants of life.
But the book isn't about sexuality. It's about living life.

Care of young primates ?
This book is about biology, rearing and care of young primates, at least that's what the title is refering to. But if you are looking for feeding schedules for youngsters (or color pictures) than this is not a book for you. However it's a good book with lots of info in it. Every chapter in this book in divided in the following subtitles : Species, Status, subspecies and distribution, Sex ratio, Social structure, Breeding age, Longevity, Seasonality, Gestation, Pregnancy diagnosis, Birth, Litter Size, Adult weight, Neonate weight, Adult diet, Adult energy requirements, Growth, Milk and milk intake,
Lactation and weaning, Feeding, Accomodation, Infant management notes, Physical development, Behavioural development, Disease and mortality, Preventative medicine, Indications for hand-reading, Reintegration and References.

Just a medicore book
This is just a so-so book but the prices is just outrageous! Only insanity people (unless the insane instructor told you to do so!) will spent over 100 dollars on such low-return investment. Rudin or Marsden's work do a much better job than this book: the author Mr. Kirkwood tried to be terse (that is why the book is less than 280 pages long) but he just incapable as to master Rudin's style of flawless and typo-less. Somebody got to tell me why they choose this book out of the other hundreds of Real Analysis texts.
Kirkwood is very well organized.
The flow of Kirkwood's book is very easy to follow, and he explains his proofs very well. I found his book to be an invaluable asset as I studied functional analysis and statistics.
