This is a fabulous book to be shared with generations!
This was one of my favorite books as a child. It left such an impact, that I checked it out from the library dozens of times. I remembered it as simply "Sarah's Story," and initially had difficulty finding it in our local library. This is among our favorite family books, one that I look forward to sharing with future generations. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is told engagingly. Be sure to share this wonderful TRUE story with any child that you hold dear.

One of My Children's Favorites
My 6-year old daughter brought this book home from the library last year. She and her 4-year old brother were entranced by the book, as was I. The fact that it is true makes it even better. My kids loved the fact that the little girl thought the bear that protected her was a dog. I plan to buy it this year for a birthday or Christmas gift, and not just for my children.

If you love animals, you'll love this book.
This tale of a wild animal caring for a human child is very touching. It is beautifully written and illustrated. I read this to my class last year and again this year. They hang on every word.

This is an excellent book about how families change.
Ten-year old Ariel's best friend is her grandmother. After her grandmother suffers a stroke, Ariel is afraid of this woman who has lost the will to live. With her help, her grandmother begins to walk and talk again, and Ariel gains a new understanding of the 'knowledge' that is passed on through the generations.

Ariel and her sick grandma make a quilt for a baby.
I loved it because her grandma made her a quilt just for her.The quilt helped Ariel feel better about the coming baby. This reminds me of my life because when my sister was born I didn't get that much attention.

Excellent book dealing with changes in family relationships
I am teaching my 10 year old daughter to quilt. She found this book in the "Accelerated Reader's Program" at school and read it because it had quilt in the title. We read two chapters every evening and we loved every page! It was hard to wait for the next evening to arrive so we could read the next chapters. This is a story about a young girl with many changes in her life. Her mother is expecting another child and her Grandmother comes to live with them. The girl loves to draw ane her Grandmother asks her to draw a picture so she can make the new baby a quilt. Many changes occur within the family because of the pregnancy and then serious health problems for the Grandmother after the quilt is started. The story revolves around the young girls struggles with the changes and who will finish the new baby's quilt. A great book to read with a warm and believable ending.

A Farm of Her Own
My three year old loves this book--and so does my nine year old, who reads it to him. They both relate to the idea of encountering something new and coming to love it so much that, years later, you want to find it again. The beautiful, rich illustrations are a large part of the appeal of the book.

A Farm of Her Own is Delightful
Natalie Kinsey-Warnock and Kathleen Kolb have captured the essence of Will and Ada Urie perfectly. They lived a very simple life, worked hard and enjoyed everything around them. This book tells their story in a poignant way without being too sugary sweet. It will appeal to all children, especially those lucky enough to live in Vermont. I was extremely lucky to have Will and Ada Urie for my grandparents and spent many wonderful days visiting "a farm of their own". I am also very excited that my daughter, Meredith Ada McKelvey, posed for the blonde girl in braids in the book.

The farm I once knew...
I am very pleased to see memories of childhood in print and glorious color. I grew up near Will and Ada Urie, and often visited their farm. Kathleen Kolb did a magnificent job rendering both of them. As I read the pages I could smell the bread baking in the oven. Natalie's words brought me back to my own childhood on my parents farm. Every child can benefit knowing how hard these two people worked for what they believed in. Back when life seemed so simple, yet more rewarding.

A great bedtime story... or history lesson
My son recieved When Spring Comes from my mother after she found the artist signing copies of this book at the mall. The illustrations are rich with detail and have a warm cozy feeling. The story is simple, an 19th century farmgirl dreams of what will happen "when spring comes" while enjoying the benefits of winter. This was one of my son's favorites and is quickly becoming a favorite of my 4 year old daughter.

An excellent store of folklore, a boy and his grandad
This is a book that explores the nature of folk stores told by a grandad, that no one, not even the grandad are sure is true. It is works with the notion that many of our folklores well are they just folk stores?? Not to be outdone are the illustrations of the book. The northernlights in this book sometimes seemed to dance on the pages. The illustrations of the book are some of the best.

A Sit-Together-and-Cuddle Book!
After seeing this book read on a children's show, I knew that my son and I would adore feeling the magic of this family story. I was right! The illustrations evoke a sense of quiet not unlike the snow itself, and the end leaves us eager to listen to some of our own family stories.

Enjoyable, quick read
The touching prolog tells of the "ghost pains" suffered by a grandfather who lost a limb in the Civil War. Lily can't understand how he can claim to feel pain in his missing leg until she undergoes a loss of her own. Her older sister dies, but readers won't know that's going to happen until the end. The sibling rivalry described is right on target. This is a wonderful story for girls who enjoy sentimental, fast-paced fiction. Don't be turned off by the critics...sure the book tinges on melodramatic, but fourth, fifth and sixth grade girls (and this librarian) love the book! It will make you appreciate family and offers lots of opportunities for discussion.
