This study Bible will serve as a useful introduction to the Orthodox interpretation of the scriptures, and many households will benefit from a copy. It is easily approachable, and the footnotes are helpful to those who are relatively unfamiliar with Orthodox theology.

Yet the critiques of others --that the OSB fails to make use of scriptural study that is prevalent within the Orthodox community, that it fails to be Patristic enough in its notes and comments-- are well grounded. Much more could have been added on the interpretation of passages by the Fathers, and it is a shame that this was not done. The book introductions are quite simplistic and often fail to consider the critical study of even Orthodox scholars on such issues as authorship, dating, audience, etc.

Still, most non-academics will find this a helpful and enjoyable volume. Its lexicon at the end, and guide to Bible reading by Bp. +KALLISTOS, are both excellent.

For those, especially, who are looking for a friendly insight into Orthodoxy through New Testament examination, it is a book worth having.

Many Orthodox scholars such as Fr. Jack Sparks, Bishop KALLISTOS Ware, & Fr. Constantine Nasr. It was overviewed by such Orthodox authorities as Fr. Thomas Hopko, Fr. Stanley Harakas, and bishops representing virtually every Orthodox diocese in North America. I find this Study Bible very useful in introducing people to Orthodoxy through the Holy Scriptures as well as a wonderful companion for every Orthodox Christian. I believe that any Orthodox family could benefit from having this Study Bible in their home.

There are wonderful notes on nearly all the verses of the New Testament, giving the interpretation of the Orthodox Church on the Holy Scriptures. It also includes a lectionary, chapters on "How to Read the Bible," and "Introducing the Orthodox Church," and wonderful articles are interspersed throughout the Bible on such topics as "Confession," "The Four 'Orders' in Church Government," and "The Transfiguration." The pages are also graced by the presence of beautiful icons.

I do have a few minor problems with this Bible. Some is left to be desired in the Book of Psalms, largely because the Septuagint, the Old Testament of the Orthodox Church, was not used. (Of course, this is about to be resolved because the same group of people is currently working on the Old Testament Orthodox Study Bible using the entire Septuagint text.) It was also disappointing to see that in the Morning and Evening prayers in the back, there is no mention of the Virgin Mary. However, the notes and articles throughout the Study Bible clearly explain the emphasis which is put on the Virgin Mary in the Orthodox Church.

I would highly recommend owning this Study Bible, and I don't feel that it deserves a lot of the harsh criticism it has gotten. They did an excellent job!

This book does a good job in providing commentary notes on Bibilcal passages with an Easern Orthodox viewpoint. The right amount of information is given. It assumes the reader has no or very little knowledge so as not to confuse potential readers, including new converts, curiosity seekers, or cradle Orthodox who have never really studied their faith.

It is filled with iconograpgy throughout and the end of the book has special sections in regards to Orthodox views, prayers, and doctrines. It is done in an easy fomat to spark one for further study and research.

This study Bible should be in any serious Bible students libarary regardless of religion. The views of the East have been often neglected by the West and the East has a rich tradition the West can learn and enjoy.

Even with Milton Berle's amazing, thick-with-laughs two volume Private Joke Files this is one of the best joke books on the market. Why? It truly contains great one-liners, straight lines, gags, roasts, etc. from the Friars Club, many of them attributed to the world's greatest entertainers and comedians.

Don't give this to Little Johnny (although he may indeed like it) since some jokes in this superb book are adult oriented (with adult language, too) and - yes -- some are politically incorrect ("She's so fat she's my TWO best friends." -- unattributed). But you'll howl with laughter as you read many of these.

And you can truly use them for any occasion or aim one at someone if you know his/her/its background ("You have to have a physical before you get into the Army. A doctor looks in one ear, another doctor looks in the other, and if they can't see each other you're in. If they can see each other, you become an MP." -- Joe E Brown). Some jokes aren't attributed but you'll find many jokes directly credited to classic and modern comedians ... EVEN BETTER: It is well-organized into topics and indexed according to performer. I read a lot of joke books. Some I read, find mildly amusing and file in the basement. This one stays on my self for reference (I am a ventriloquist believe it or not) -- and if I just need a pick-me-up belly laugh. WELL worth the price!!

This is the best Joke book that I have ever read. It contains jokes from all of the worlds greatest comedians. Almost every joke is a real knee slapper. I have told most of the jokes to my friends and have never gotten a bad response. The only problem with the book is that it is too good. Ever since I read it I haven't heard a joke that wasn't in the book. I have given it as a gift to all of my friends. I sugest that you don't read it all at once because some of the brillant jokes may fall through the cracks. My only waring is that this book isn't sutable for children under the age of 13 because of graphic language and sexual humor. But if you are up for the task I highly recomend this book

I think this book was hilarious. Full of all sorts of jokes that can be reshaped for a kids mind. But, most of the jokes i read made me burst out laughing. I really enjoyed but it's not for kids 12 and under.

There's no reason for this book to even exist, let alone be published. Lewrie is a '90s sterotype of the 18th Century Gay Blade who has no morals worth mentioning. Though charming in some respects, he cannot be relied on to keep an oath. Why should anyone trust him? Indeed, why should we like him?

It is disappointing to start a series that had such promise only to have to toil through this poor effort obviously rushed to press. While it is surprising that Lambdin apparently never learned to punctuate properly, it is even more surprising that the publisher did not have an editor on hand to correct this very rough draft. A re-read of anything Patrick O'Brian ever wrote is far more enjoyable.

Lambdin's hero is the perfect foil for Jack Aubrey. Jack Aubrey, Patrick O'Brian's hero is a classic tarry-handed, lead-by-example fighting sailor to the bone but takes himself a little too seriously. Alan Lewrie, Lambdin's main man, also a real lead-by-example fighting sailor to the bone sees himself almost too much like a goat instead of a hero. Nonetheless, Jack Aubrey had mids like Lewry that he was rightly proud of. More importantly, they both get the King's work done in Bristol fashion without wasting a minute. Their men revere them both and follow them into the bellies of beast after beast. That they emerge victorious is as expected as it is wondrous but, in both cases, it makes great reading. If you are seeking lessons in Napoleonic Era England's dress, forms of address, gossip and politics embedded in robust tales of derring do, read O'Brian. If you want entertainment with much less history and a with a ring-side view of a real boy-becomes-man tale, go for Lambdin. That Lambdin's man still hasn't recognized himself for the man he has become makes him even more enjoyable. Sure he is a scooundrel but he is a successful scoundrel and a winner as well. Personally, I find both protagonists equally entertaining and believable. I can't imagine having to pick one over the other when I can have both.

A nice little essay on SF cinema that doesn't feel that structured. Lots of nice trivia but the author is quite taken by Star Wars to the detriment of previous SF movies. The only memorable moment is where the writer starts slagging off John Boorman's Zardoz (a film I feel is a under-rated gem). Something to give your little brother to shut him up on a very long car trip.
