The Sweet Summer
William Kelley's novel, The Sweet Summer is a memorable story of a young airman and ambitious priest Cully Madden. In the summer of 1947, Cully joins an all-black Air Force boxing team. Cully forms deep friendships with his teammates while they are in the South on tour. Cully and his team face many battles inside and outside of the ring. Cully learns many lessons that teach him to understand the origin of the cruelty that allows his friends to live in such a barbaric world he never imagined could have existed. This novel is an account of the friendship of a white man and his black peers in a time that friendships of this kind rarely existed. This book led me on an adventure from a place and time I have never visited. It portrays with harsh honesty how African Americans suffered in the post World War II era. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a novel full of courage, friendship, honor, compassion and heroism.

The Sweet Summer
This book is a poignant and brutal story of a white man on an all black Air Force boxing team. The late 40s Deep South settings of flop houses, make-shift boxing rings, and swamp shanties make you almost feel the humidity in the air and know the desperation of men determined to win at all costs. I highly recommend this beautiful book by the writer who won an Academy Award for co-writing Witness.

when will come new publish of this book ?

An encyclopedic, reference textbook The gold standard.
There are many excellent textbooks about Internal Medicine on the market, and I own a lot of them. But the Kelley's book is the one I look up more often. It stands out, since it gives you the broadest and deepest clinical coverage of the internal medicine you can find in a two-volumes textbook. The forthcoming 4th edition, which is scheduled for 8/2000 and will be edited by Humes, will expand furter the coverage, reaching an unprecedented range, at least as can be judged by the anticipated index. For the sake of clarity and completeness, each subspecialty (cardiology, endocrinology and metabolism, and so forth) is divided in three parts: the first group of chapters is devoted to the pathophysiologic foundations, the second to diseases and the third to the diagnosis and treatment. This format is clever, because allow you to study each section separately without being overwhelmed by the astonishing amount of information it contains. A lot of chapters are devoted to the approach to the patient with different symptoms, to the interpretation of instrumental data and to the treatment: they are another distictive feature of the book, making it invaluable. If you are a physician or a serious student searching for an authoritative, encyclopedic textbook with broad pathophysiologic coverage and wide sections about the management of the patient, the Kelley's textbook will not disappoint you. For many of us, it is a must buy. For all, it is a bargain. This textbook is the gold standard as Internal Medicine textbook: it got 5-stars from Doody, and as far as I know, it was the only one awarded with such a high acknowledgement. I agree: five stars.

excellent textbook
most comprehensive work ever.an edge over Harrison &Cecil.must buy.

1981 edition review
This is a dense book -- what I mean is that is has a lot of material, a lot of images, and it is rather small print. This version has "new materials" from William Kelly Simpson but it is currently 20+ years old so I'd not recommend it for a new class or serious study -- things do change in the study of the ancient world as new discoveries, new techniques, and new theories develop. However, if you just want basic, great images, ad chronological order to the study of art and architecture it is perfectly fine for these purposes. I used it extensively when I was studying ancient Egypt back at Columbia University.

Mastepiece of Egyptian Art
As always, the reprint of this title should be warmly welcomed. This is a high-standart, much authoritative text on Egyptian art from its origins down to the sunset of Egypt's glorious pharaonic civilization. It is not only well-writen but also furnished with lavishing plates and a lot of figures, which constitute a wealth of information. Not only for Egyptologists and Egyptofans, but for anybody interested in learning seriously about the treasures of art and architecture in the Nile Valley. Highly recommendable.

very descriptive and informative
Many art and architectural treasures survive from Ancient Egypt. This book offers 400 illustrations of such treasures from the fourth millennium B.C. to the conquest of Alexander the Great. The author examines Ancient Egyptian tombs, temples, palaces, decorations, and many other works of art. A recommended book for the interested student of art and of Egyptology.

scholarly and informative, if not exciting
This book provides an introductory overview of the history of Mesopotamia and Egypt. It was considered reliable by a respected professor of Near Eastern Studies when I was in college and I continue to return to it to brush up on my Assyriolgy and Eqyptology.

Another great undergraduate book
Hallo and Simpson provide another choice to instructors of ancient Near Eastern history. Well researched, supported, and clearly written, it can easily serve as the only text for an introductory class. Non-specialists and laypeople may wish to consult it for basic facts.

the Drum it Still Beats,,,,
"A Different Drummer" written by William Kelly is a fictional story that illuminates a real American topic. The topic of racism and finding self identity communicate the historical socio-culturial differences between Black and white lives in America. Kelly uses the subject of racism in everyday life to expose the subconscious minds of both Black and white america (this, the quest for idenity for both races). This story touches on the mental effects that life in America imposes on society. For white and Black America, William Kelly's "A Different Drummer" uses the real life topic of racism to dig deep into the cultural acceptance of Blacks society. Kelly tells this story using a fictional slave narrative in a non-linear voice to express the events of this novel.
This novel is set somewhere in the deep south in the early 1960's. The Black and white races are clearly seperated. These races exist together only as a function of society. White Americans and Black Americans know no more about each other than that of themselves. Whites in the south allow their ignorance to convince themselves to understand the other race through their efforts of folktale and misconceptions. A white character, Mister Harper, tells a story of a great African who was massive in size, strong, and dominant with independence. As Mister Harper tells this story to his peers who are mental and physical oppressors. We (the reader) are exposed to the mentality of the white community. The difference in Black and white culture, and the lack of wanting to respect and understand each other, perpetuate the confusion and rage within each race.
It is understood that the main character is Tucker Caliban. He is a quite man who finds himself through time and evolution (this is his quest for idenity). It is a feeling inside his soul, it is a feeling inside his peers souls that tell them that the way they are treated by whites in the south is totally unacceptable and will never change. It is Tucker's independence and realization of self that allow him to manifest the strength to cut off his relationship with the white south. This novel shows that the awakening is not limited to only Tucker, but it extends to all Black people in the south. It is a universal awakening that allows all Blacks in the entire state to rid themselves of their mental and physical bondage. Consequentially, the whites in this community contiue their lives in the same ways, mentally unaware of what is really taking place. The whites only observe the exodus of Blacks. The white community has yet to realize the situation, yet to visualize their violent ways. It is this hate and this rage in the south that ignite this cultural-socio awakening. It is this awakening that will continue to fuel enlightenment and independence within the Black community as the drum continues,as the drum beats on,,,,drum, drum,,drum,DRUM,,,,D R U M,,,,,,,,,,,,

Great Story depicting onset of Civil Rights Movement.
Different Drummer set in a fictional Southern state is a story about a former slaver, Tucker Caliban who is a descendent of a legendary African slave. Tucker Caliban a black Southerner burns down his home and his fields seemingly for no good reason and then packs up his family and personal belongings to head North. Consequently this event leads to a revolution and several blacks in Tucker's fictional town start to follow.

This story continues the African American slave narrative genre by including the element of "storytelling." Kelley uses a nonlinear plot sequence folk aesthetic to portray this powerful story about the Civil Rights Movement. The setting of the story is a rural setting and the story is told from the perspective of several different whites and former slaveholders. Also adding to the power of the story is the use of nonstandard English/Southern dialect.

The major themes of this book are slavery vs. freedom and also the quest for identity. Throughout development of the plot it became clear that Tucker had a clear motivation for his rebellion. Tucker Caliban's journey from the South is about searching for his true self, his identity as an African American without the remnants of slavery associated with living in the South. The story brings in the viewpoint of several characters including his former slavemaster and a character by the name of Reverend Bradshaw who becomes mixed up with Tucker Caliban's rebellion and is used in the book as a scapegoat. Kelley's writing style and careful plot make this a very interesting read.

Brilliant. A True Literary Classic!
This is one of the most deeply imaginative, powerful books that I have ever read. William Melvin Kelley, clearly a master of the English language, gets right to the heart of the human spirit, in all of its bravery and its desire for dignity. It is the story of one man's leadership and impact. This novel will make you want to rise up and strive to make a difference in your life and in those of others. It is a haunting tale that will stay with you long past your first reading.

Collection from Old, Middle and New Kingdoms.
I should say that the edition that I bought only last year, the new edition, is from 1973 and may not be exactly like the revised edition. My interest in these writings arose from an understanding that they had a not intangible effect on Biblical literature. But although I feel bad giving this book only 3 stars I should explain that there are reasons for this. First is that many of the stories, etc. are fragmentary or missing the entire beginning, end or both. If they were all complete it would get at least 4. The other reason is the often obscure quality of the readings, which is purely a function of our not getting enough exposure to books like this. Mostly if the story was complete, it was very enjoyable, but if broken up and missing parts, it seemed useless to the general reader. So I cannot say that the low rating is due in any way to the fault of the editors or translators. Other than that it was a charming array of tales and advice that is every bit as good as Biblical literature.

Great Reference
This is a great book to add to your Egyptian Literature library. It contains many narratives, stories, lamentations, and poetry which can also be found in the three volume set by Miriam Lichtheim. Although many 'stories' are fragmentary - it is not THAT excessive. The editors have provided footnotes and commentaries on the missing parts of the stories, which attempt to explain the missing parts. Each 'story' starts with a commentary, and is followed by the text. Some pieces include: "Shipwrecked Sailor", "Story of Sinuhe", "Tale of the Doomed Prince", "Contendings of Horus and Seth", "Truth and Falsehood", "Teaching for Merikare", "Maxims of Ptahhotpe", "The Man Who Was Tired of Life", "Instruction of Amenemope", "Hymn to the Aten", "Instruction of a Man for His Son".

Interesting look at art, artists and the landscape
This is a well written look at 8 artists in Nevada. Most interesting is how these artists and their work reflects and interacts with the desert landscape in a variety of ways. The artists respond in a variety of ways using abstraction, collage, installation and mixed media. The book is well illustrated and shows examples of the artists' work. Fox has an obvious affection for the artists in this book and strikes a tone that is balanced and enthusiastic. It is an interesting look at 8 specific artists but also delves into the creative process, culture in the Western US and how the landscape impacts all of that. Definitely worth the time!

The Bible of Rheumatology - Still true?
Kelley's et. al., Textbook of Rheumatology has been considered the Bible of Rheumatology ever since its 1st edition. The 5th edition still lays claim to that honour. However, the appearance of Klippel and Dieppe's Rheumatology has effectively relegated it to a second place. Kelley's is lucid and far-reaching into areas of Rheumatology, but it is more concise, less illustrative, and harder to digest than Klippel's. Moreover, the tendency to have the same editors and authors write chapters throughout the history of the book has made the book rather stagnant, with few differences between the 4th and 5th edition. The book is rather ethnocentric in concentrating on research done in USA, largely ignoring research (and authors) from other parts of the world, while Klippel's is more cosmopolitan and has more global representation in authorship and content. For example, in the chapter on Rheumatoid Arthritis in Kelley's, it is held that the occurrence of the disease is constant in different areas of the world, while Klippel's points to evidence to the opposite of that statement. Still, Kelley's is a very useful reference textbook for the specialist rheumatologist who knows quite a bit about his subject, less so for the beginning fellow.

Dangerous Hucksterism
This book appears to be a compendium of poorly documented cases with no scientific methodology at all. No attempt is made at peer review, no statistical data is presented from patient sampling, in general just the story of one man who seems to blindly ignore the basic tenents of any scientific process.

Garbage
No science, no numbers, nothing. Just a lengthy synopsis on one man's attempt to profit from the misery of others. Anyone who follows this advice to treat their malignancy should accustome themselves to the embalming technique. They will soon endure it. Remember laetrile.

This book opened my eyes!
What a facinating story! This book is filled with dozens of accounts of people who had REALLY advanced cancers, but who were COMPLETELY cured. According to my understanding, the patients would have died had they continued with the protocols of standard medicine.

The foreword is written by a radiation oncologist who has quite impressive things to say about this unusual but non-toxic way of treating cancer.

The author also tells the sordid role of organized medicine without rancor. If this book ever hits the top ten, heads might roll.

One annoyance is the sloppy editing. There are numerous typos in the front of the book, and an errata sheet which basically tells the reader that basic explanations are backwards!

Still, the story ought to be read by everyone.
