This book is part of the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series, which has more than 80 titles. The Stage 1 books explain simple and easily observable science concepts for preschool- and kindergarten-age children. Stage 2 books, which includes this title, explore more challenging concepts for children in the primary grades and include hands-on activities that children can do themselves. "Let's Go Rock Collecting" is suitable for young children.
AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO ROCKHOUNDING
THIS IS A FINE BOOK FOR INTRODUCING YOUR CHILDREN TO THE WONDERS OF ROCKHOUNDING. THE AUTHOR BELIEVES THAT CHILDREN WANT TO READ AND FIND OUT FOR THEMSELVES. LET YOUR CHILDEN READ THIS BOOK, AND THEN TURN THEM LOOSE ON ANY NORTHERN BEACH WITH PLENTY OF ROCKS. THEY'LL HAVE A BALL, AND YOU'LL LEARN SOMETHING, TOO (YOUR KIDS WILL TELL YOU).

A must-read for adopted children of any age
While Horace is an excellent book for children, especially when adopted cross culturally, it can be helpful for older children as well. I work in international education, and teenagers have appreciated it when identiy issues hit. As an adoptive mother, I wish I had thought to encourage my children to "choose us, too" as Horace did at the end of the story. Every adoptive parent should consider this as a way to give young adopted children a sense of control and add something precious to their adoption stories. I also appreciated how positively the "tigers" he meets and plays with in his search were regarded. It is a wonderful story of love and choice and how both can contribute to identity.
WONDERFUL FIRST BOOK FOR ADOPTED CHILDREN.
WE ENJOY SHARING THIS STORY WITH OUR DAUGHTER'S PRESCHOOL CLASS TO HELP THEM UNDERSTAND WHAT ADOPTION MEANS. BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK, STRIPES AND SPOTS MAKES LOOKING DIFFERENT LESS IMPORTANT.
Hooray for Horace!
Horace, the little leopard, just wants to belong. His having spots rather than stripes (like his parents) is just a metaphor for his worries about not belonging -- sometimes. By the end of the story, he realizes that "spots vs. stripes" really isn't important at all.
At first, when reading this book over myself, I liked the low-key, reassuring tone that struck me as sweet, not sappy. The real acid test was, however, how my toddler son reacted. It's been over 2 years now and he still requests Horace at bedtime.

What Good Is Snow?
Rather than attempting to explain how snow is made, this book discusses the good and bad things about snow. For instance, snow protects plants and animals from harsh winds and can keep things warm. However, snow can also bury food for animals and cause floods in the spring. This book is fairly easy for pre-schoolers to understand though there are a few difficult words they have trouble understanding at first (thermometer and temperature). The illustrations that accompany the text are colorful, yet not overpowering. A great science book to use for preschoolers when talking about winter.
General Introduction to Snow
Rather than go into the science of how snow is formed, this book discusses the effects of snow... Snow protects plants and hibernating animals from wind and cold and, in the spring, melted snow waters the new plants. The book also discussed the dangerous conditions snow can cause. The colorful illustrations and subject of the text make it a good book for a pre-kindergarten curriculum.

Air is All Around You
This is a good book to use during any study on air. It provides some easy hands-on experiments with good visual pictures to illustrate the properties of air. Good choice for any science class with Kindergarten or First Grade students.

A little girl [pig] waits for the big snow storm to come.
In a nicely illustrated book Holly Keller tells the story of Geraldine, who is waiting for the big snowstorm so that she can try out her new sled. The story also shows how others in the neighborhood get ready for snow. I am a librarian who regularly does story programs for children. I have used this story for many years and with many groups. It is always well received by kids and teachers. My relatives [young children] like it too.

Cute Illustrations!
This book is not the best book for storytime or a bedtime story. It is very short and has little action. However, it is great for teaching beginning math vocabulary dealing with size.
Great book for younger readers
This is a great book to teach size relationships as well as some basic reading words. The illustrations are great. However, I think the recommended age range (4-6)is a little off. My two year old loves the book, a friends 4 year old thinks its boring and too short.
