Frightening as a Thriller, but REAL!
Ahmed Jibril AKA Abu Jihad (Father Holy War) is a name that is well known to members of anti-terrorist units around the world. Jibril is (maybe was) a master terrorist who helped to pioneer the use of air jacking (taking planes and their passengers hostage), bombing of airliners, killing of innocents, and a host of other crimes.

This book tells his story from what little is known of his formative years until his disappearance from the world scene around the early 1990's (It is thought that either the Syrians are hiding him or that he might have died from a heart attack.). Simply put, this man is a monster and it's frightening that people like him exist. He is responsible for the deaths of around 600 to 700 people from a myriad of nations (most of the people were killed from bombing airliners including the 270 people who perished on Pan Am Flight 103 which exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland). He pioneered the use of explosives on planes (using barometric triggers i.e. they sense altitude and pressure). Some of the scariest attacks include taking school children hostage in Israel and killing eleven of them and three of their teachers.

This book is a nonstop thriller recounting Jibril's moves, as they are known and countermoves from various forces trying to stop him. I recommend it to those interested in learning more about terrorism, political movements in the Middle East, counterterrorism methods, or simply a glimpse into the mind of a madman.

Great Insider's Look at the IDF
Samuel Katz is the IDF Guru. He served in the IDF during the War in Lebanon and then left the service to pursue a writing career. His wife is a sabra (native-born Israeli) so he has access to Hebrew research sources, which give him an edge up on many non-Hebrew-speaking IDF researchers.

This book is an exceptionally easy look into the difficult-to-research and security-conscious Israeli Defence Force. This book concentrates on the IDF ground forces including chapters on the IDF order of battle, some IDF background history, the Giva'ati brigade, the paratroopers, the Armored branch, the Golani brigade, the Merkhava tank, the Na'ha'l, Israeli officers, the role of females and older rservists, and an appendix on Israeli armament. While I wouldn't necessarily call it an in-depth study of the IDF, I would say that it is a very comprehensive introduction to the IDF complete with beautiful photographs. Some of the photographs are ones I've not seen elsewhere and I think I've seen most of the phototographs in the Israeli National Archives! It is also one of the few books published about the IDF in 1990 and is fully up-to-date as of 1990 IDF history.

I highly recommend this book for IDF fans, military gamers, military history enthusiasts, or others with some sort of interest in the Israeli military. It's companion volume: Israel's Air Force - The Power Series is also worth getting.

A Brilliant and Rigorous Study of Beckett's Prose
This critical study of Samuel Beckett's prose aptly relies on post-structural thought to investigate a highly challenging text. Without simplifying or mystifying the difficulty of Beckett's prose, this book is written with much intelligence, elegance and rigor. Commendable.

Really Serious, Really Current, Combat Military Intelligence
Use the out-of-print service, this book is a gem. This is a great book about the minutia and the value of a well-rounded military intelligence capability--it is relevant to U.S. and other operations going on right now. I was especially impressed with four aspects: the emphasis on prisoner interrogation; the development of easy to install tactical signals collection devices that could be carried in and installed by deep reconnaissance units; the over-all commitment to long-range patrolling; and the clearly authorized commitment to "behind the lines" covert violence (assassination), using all the tools of intelligence to identify and then kill very specific individuals such as the two Egyptian Colonels believed to be guiding the Palestinian terrorist actions against Israel. These are all areas where the U.S. military is weak (and in one case clearly forbidden to consider action), and I consider this book a helpful manual for military officers who wish to take a more active role in preparing defense intelligence for the future--we cannot do military intelligence the way the Israeli's do it, if we persist in thinking that desk-bound beltway analysts and overhead satellite collection are all that we need.

Finally a good illustrated guide to spec ops
This a nicely illustrated book in the way we expect from Concord. What I especially appreciate is that we are introduced to the more lesser known Spec ops units around the world, for example the swedish rangers, argentinan counter terrorist units etc... I'm eagerly awaiting vol 3,4 and 5.

Special Ops: Journal of the Elite Forces Vol. 4
This book is an excellent account all about the lives of elite and secretive special forces operatives. Equipment, training, missions, tips, all included here. By far, one of the best special ops books I've ever read, and I've read quite a few. The one and only thing left to be desired, is that in one of the books in the quartet could have featured something on the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team and their functions. Without saying, this book is a must for anyone interested or intrigued by the Special Ops circles, or for just a good, short read. I am delighted to know that there are people out there who know how to research and formulate such a great biography on the elite special forces of the world.

Battleground: Fact and Fantasy in Palestine

Used price: $5.00

Weakened by selective ommissions and inaccuracies
The impact of this work is greatly undermined by its inaccuracies, so numerous that clearly cannot be listed here in full. An example is the notion that Jews represented a majority population in historic Palestine throughout the last few centuries. Another is that Arab and British propananda have been more greatly at work that Zionist propaganda in skewing international opinion surrounding the current conflict.

ACCURATE AND VERIFIABLE HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS
Book was an excellent historical resource and an accurate compilation of historical facts. Verifiable sources are cited and facts are fully corroborated. One can imagine that most anti-Israel propagandists will be unnerved and thoroughly shaken by this book, as their ability to distort and disinform will be severly limited, or even eliminated. A truly unbiased student of history will appreciated this book. Anti-Zionists and ant-Semites will probably find an additional opportunity to spew their hatred and deceitful rhetoric regarding undeniable realities.

Old But Accurate
This, like the work of Joan Peters, is a magnificent piece of reporting on the real history of the Middle East conflict. But in the 27 years since it was published, that past has grown ever more faded in public and journalistic memory.

Supporting Israel and the facts is now so politically incorrect that a prominent newspaper website recently deleted a posting stating this important background: In 1922 the League of Nations adopted by international vote a plan to establish a Jewish National Home in Palestine, which then included all of current day Israel and Transjordan. Shortly thereafter, Britain unilaterally and illegally granted more than 80% of that original Palestine to the Arabs, creating current day Jordan. And now, Israel is blamed for the plight of "refugees" that the Arab nations have exploited to the max in their 52-year war against the Jewish state.

Of many important pieces of the historical puzzle, the best is this: In 1919, less than two years after the Balfour Declaration, Emir Faisal of Syria and Iraq--then the only recognized Arab leader in the world--declared the plan "moderate and proper." One result was the 1922 League of Nations vote to adopt the plan.

King Faisal's approval of plans for a National Home for the Jews was no less significant because it encompassed all of current day Israel and all of current day Jordan. In 1919, there were very few Arabs and many Jews in Palestine, and King Faisal saw the importance of recognizing the rights of the Jewish people to their homeland.

Unfortunately, most Arab nations--from which most "Palestinians" actually immigrated--never recognized even the considerably reduced version of the Jewish state and still prefer a permanent state of war rather than admit Jews the right to their state governing places in which tens of thousands of Jews resided even after the Romans sacked the second Temple in 70 A.D. And why should they? Thanks to a largely uninformed press corps, they are winning a propaganda war that has all but wiped out the past, substituting instead a Kafkaesque fantasy.

The publishers should RUSH this book back into print! Alyssa A. Lappen

Confusing
When I saw the page I recognized the cover of the book, but I could not believe what people were actually writing about it.

First I want to say that I am an undergraduate biotechnology student. I have a very strong background in biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, tissue culture techniques, and immunology; but I have not had any classes dealing with anatomy or physiology since Bio 101 way back when. I have read and am quite comfortable with Alberts Molecular Biology of the Cell and Stryers Biochemistry, and even a handful of primary journal articles, so I do know how to read a textbook.

Now with that out of the way, let me say that this book is completely incomprehensible. It is so full of anatomy and Latin derived words (which it does a poor job at explaining BTW) that I can only assume that it was meant for medical students, and to have physiology an a prerequisite for it, but it doesn't even have an introduction describing the recommended background or whom it is supposed to be for. In fact, most of the book is devoted to the physiology of sensation and movement, not neurobiology. Now if you have the background for it and thats what you are looking for then it is a very thorough text that goes into a lot of depth.

If you are looking to understand the biochemistry or molecular aspects of neurobiology, find another book!

Excellent! Accessible, great graphics, good organization.
As an undergraduate Psychobiology student, this text served me well in my Neuroscience course. In all honesty I never went. I just read this book. I got excellent marks in the class. As a serious slacker and bibliophile, I recommend this textbook for any like-minded student.

Excellent for Undergrads
As an undergraduate Neuroscience major I found this textbook to be highly informative and well-written. It was used to a Freshman-level course, and was easy to understand, yet thorough and interesting. The graphics are well done, and the format is better than most textbooks I'm used to. Anyone, even with minimal science experience could dive right in and learn a great deal. It may not be advanced enough, however, for grad or medical students. As a reference it does okay, but there are more-advanced texts which would probably do better. All-in-all it is an excellent book. In-fact, I liked it so much that I didn't sell it back at the end of the semester and keep it on my bookshelf for future reference (and future classes!)
