I first read this book in 1972, the original 1947 edition. It is one of the few permanent items in my library. I read it again at least once a year. I have even tried some of the projects John describes including the radio set made out of bits laying around the cabin. If you want a relaxing and enjoyable read about life in the woods, get this!

Every true outdoors man and woman needs to read two books. One is Leopold's A Sand County Alamanac, the other is Cache Lake Country. If you've hunted, fished, and trekked the northwoods as much as I have, and love its brooding, dark beauty, this book will capture the sensations of the taiga. It is almost painful to read it if you find yourself trapped in someone else's idea of the good life, when what you really want to do is chuck it all for a cabin in the boreal forest.

I first read this book when I was 12 years old, I am now 46. I could not put it down and can not. I made my first knike sheath, first snow shoes, and my first moc;s (which remain my favorite type of moc's) from sketches from this book, as well as many of the other projects and they all lived up to expectations of a young teenager to present. You feel like you are there with the three men of the story. It is is one of the few books that I reread every couple of years. Worth every penney and then some.

The first volume of the Green Lantern Archives is delightful stuff. Great sci-fi adventures, with terrific art by the late Gil Kane. I wasn't a Hal Jordon fan before I read this, but now I'm rethinking my position.

My only real grumble is that, aside from Hector Hammond, the really good GL villains aren't on display. But you have to start somewhere. If you've never really dug on GL before, give this a shot. It's worth it.

Green Lantern Archives Volume 1 reprints the early stories of the second Green Lantern of Earth, Hal Jordan, from the Silver Age of comics. Reprinting Showcase #22-24 and Green Lantern (second series) #1-5, we see the early days of Hal Jordan becoming a superhero as well as his supporting cast of characters. True classics. A must read for any fan of Green Lantern Hal Jordan!

Green Lantern - arguably as powerful as Superman but back in the 1960s perhaps one of the more unsung super-heroes - returns in his earliest Silver Age adventures! Nobody did it better than John Broome and Gil Kane - the heroes, allies and villians are - out of this world!

This is one of only a handful of Silver Age archives in print right now - many of the others, especially those for Superman and Batman, showcase Golden Age stories. While these are classics, it is the Silver Age where comics really blossomed, and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) is a prime example.

The Green Lantern archives published to date (#1-3) contain hard-to-find (and expensive!) issues of Hal Jordan's earliest exploits, including origins and battles with his yellow power-ringed arch enemy Sinestro, Hector Hammond and others, plus his classic, colorful and extraordinary team-ups with The Fastest Man Alive - Flash (Barry Allen).

This is a must-buy, must-own and must-read series for any serious fan of the Silver Age - or comics in general. Good reading for those darkest days and blackest nights!

This book wasn't the first book of Arthurian legend that I have read, but it was the one that made my mouth water for more. The book, although mostly about Arthur, describes in detail the passionate relationship between Guinevere and Lancelot. It has been awhile since I actually read it, but i've been looking for it since. I think it was the greatest book. This fantastic novel is a must-read for any Camelot fan.

Excalibur is one of those books that stay with you your entire life. It's beauty and fully realised characterizations have influenced me greatly for over 20 years since I read it in high school in the late 70's. I have been intrigued with King Arthur lore and tales of knights ever since. I'm even a professional jousting knight now at the New york Renaissance festival. However, Amazon.com lists this book as being published in '85. This can't be, because as I have stated, I read it in the late 70's. Regardless, if you love Arthurian tales, you must try to find this book. I've read nearly all of the Arthurian adaptations and this one, the first one, is still one of my favorites.

Arthur lives again in this excellent interpretion of the M'orte d' Arthur. From conception to death, Arthur's life is beatifully chronicled. This is one of the best books I have ever read!

For anyone who struggled to understand why the nephron concentrates, then dilutes, then concentrates again the urine, this book will do much to ease your pain. Since medical school I've purchased Editions 1, 3, & 5, just so that I could keep up with my interns & residents. Here's how he does it:
#1: short book, (you know how intimidating those tomes can be)
#2: lots of diagrams
#3: end-of-chapter questions (with answers & explanations)

If you want to understand the Kidney, no matter where you are in your studies or practice, I wholeheartedly recommend this text.

Renal physiology can be very difficult to truly understand, and yet an understanding of it is essential to understanding so many aspects of physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Studying diuretics for cardio pharm is nightmarish unless you understand the physiology of the loop of Henle. Vander takes this difficult yet important subject and makes it easy to understand. The book reads extremely quickly, and the flow-charts and diagrams are amazing. I never even opened Berne & Levy for renal phys--I read Vander's book (which is no longer than B&L's renal chapters) and cruised through renal phys. I am writing this review now, a year after I took physiology, because I am now studying for the USMLE Step 1. I have not looked at Vander's book in a year, but I still remember renal phys, and reviewing it now is the easiest part of my studying (the only easy part, in fact). That is because, thanks to Vander, I actually understand renal physiology. A great book!!

For any medical student that needs a comprehensive, but easily understood explanation of the structure and function of kidneys, I highly recommend Renal Physiology by Vander. It is very well written, and covers all the basic principles that you will need to know to understand pathologies associated with the kidneys.

Actually "The Death of Gwen Stacy" deals with more than the titular fatality and the end of the original Green Goblin in reprinting five classic comic books from Volume 1 of "The Amazing Spider-Man." You also get the previous three-story confrontation between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin that became infamous when the stories did not receive the Comic Book Code seal of approval because of a major sub-plot involving Peter Parker's roommate Harry Osborn being hooked on drugs: (1) "Amazing Spider-Man" #69, "And now, the Goblin," Story by Stan Lee, Art by Gil Kane and John Romita, Sr.; (2) "Amazing Spider-Man" #70, "In the Grip of the Goblin," Story by Stan Lee, Art by Gil Kane and Frank Giacoia; and (3) "Amazing Spider-Man" #71, "The Goblin's Last Gasp," Story by Stan Lee, Art by Gil Kane and Frank Giacoia. This was the first time when Norman Osborn remembered who he was along with Spider-Man's secret identity. Of course, the resolution of this crises leaves much to be desired since it is a tentative, at best, fix. The most memorable sequences in these stories is actually when Peter Parker and not Spider-Man takes down Harry's dealer. This trilogy sets up the other story, not just because it is the previous confrontation between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin, but because another subplot has Peter and Gwen resolving their current interpersonal conflict.

The key thing to remember when you get to the next pair of stories is that Stan Lee is no longer writing the book and therefore killing off Peter's girl friend was not his idea: (4) "Amazing Spider-Man" #112, "The Night Gwen Stacy Died," Story by Gerry Conway, Art by Gil Kane and John Romita, Sr.; and (5) "Amazing Spider-Man" #113 "The Goblin's Last Round," Story by Gerry Conway, Art by Gil Kane and John Romita, Sr. Of course, the title of that first issue does not appear until the final page, since it obviously gives the game away, but just as clearly that is not a problem for this trade paperback collection. I think Conway did away with Gwen because Peter was getting pretty close to actually being happy and Spider-Man needed to get back to the oppressive sense of guilt that drives him because of the death of a loved one. Now, in addition to Uncle Ben, there is Gwen (Spider-Man was much more responsible for Gwen's death than that of Captain Stacy). Little would we know that the end of this story, where Mary Jane Watson stays with Peter to comfort him after Gwen's death, that this would end up being the start of something special.

Also included in this collection is "The Kiss," by John Marc DeMatteis and John Romita, Sr., which is reprinted from "Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man #1," which serves as a poignant epilogue to the main events. This 112-page edition has a new cover by new painted cover by John Van Fleet. I would not exactly say that the deaths of Gwen Stacy and the Green Goblin were "great" Spider-Man stories, but they were certainly important and constituted an impressive one-two punch for consecutive issues. The historical importance would apply to the Lee stories as well. Unfortunately, these events eventually led to introducing the horrible idea of clones into the story line, both for the late lamented Gwen and Peter himself. More often than not, the dead should stay dead, even in the world of comic books.

This is a TPB of the saddest moment in spidey history. The Green Goblin commited his most henous act killing Gwen Stacy ( spideys Girl Friend). But it was also shows a supposed final end (impaled by his own glider) It also left room for harry to take his fathers place.

Terry McGinnis patrols Gotham City as Batman. Drawn to an attack on a building, he flies down and sees Shriek. While they fight, Batman has to save a young deaf boy from falling rock. Batman tracks Shriek down, but their fight again involves young Tommy. Part of what makes Shriek evil is his own deafness, and Batman knows that.

BATMAN BEYOND: HEAR NO EVIL is written like a comic book. The use of panels and word balloons draw an early reader's eye on, and the layout makes the story fun to read out loud. The art is really well done, showing lots of action and color.

This book is recommended for young fans of the BATMAN BEYOND cartoon.

It's a misnomer to call this an audiobook, because it's something far more interesting. KnightFall is a a full scale radio play with sound effects, character readings and brilliant editting that surpasses even the fantastic National Public Radio production of Star Wars.
This book is brilliant and after listening to it, I felt more like I'd seen a really great movie than listened to an audiobook.
It's simply fantastic!

This full cast audio drama was originally released on BBC tapes. Michael Gough had reprised his role of Alfred from the recent movies. The story features the Joker, the Riddler, the Mad Hatter, and Knightwing.

I found this book quick and easy to read with lots of sensible tips for use on board the cruise ship. Macchi knows his way around the ship and explores lots of ways for the new cruiser to have fun and save money. A good book to have with you on a cruise. It was given to me by a close friend and it was the best thing I could have brought on my most recent voyage.

Back in the prehistoric days of the 1970's, I found this small book in my school library. Despite it's small size, it became, and has always been a bible of life in the northwoods. No politics, no social agenda, just a detailed blueprint of the pleasures and perils of living far from the city. The book covers the basics of shelter and winter warmth. It instructs the reader in a variety of skills ( from keeping oatmeal warm until breakfast, to making snowshoes to get along in mid-winter). All in all, I recall it as the first docu-drama that I ever had the pleasure to read. Though it can be labeled as non fiction (of the instructive kind), it has the ability to build endles dreams of pioneer life in the mind of most any reader.

I reviewed this book several years ago, and after accidently stumbling upon my review, the same images, smells, and excitement still come to mind. I just purchased an old copy at many times the original price, and I can't wait to read it again after more than thirty years. It still amazes me to thnk that a simple diary of life in a bygone distant frontier could elicit such a Technicolor panorama in the mind of the reader. Everyone should read this book. It's good for the soul.

Don't we all wish we knew someone like J.J. Rowlands. What a life! He should have been a father; what a wealth of information he might have imparted... ...and what delivery! Couldn't put it down. Thank goodness he left us his book.

This was back when comic stories were interesting to read and were done by writers who could write and artists who could draw. The story of Hal Jordan, how he becomes Green Landarn, and tries to find balance in his life both as a superhero and a human being. The stories are easy to read and it does make a good case that Green Landarn should be made as a movie, are you listening Warner Brothers?

I highly recommend this book to all Green Lantern fans! It contains the early adventures of Hal Jordan...and even has a guest appearnce by The Flash (Wally West). Trust me, when you start to read it you won't put it down!

Green Lantern has always been an interesting member of the 'super hero' group by DC. As a boy, I used to look forward to the Justice League of America comic to see him in action. Later, when I discovered he had his own title, I began to buy it as well.

The character is uniquely human has an interesting story thread -- the mysterious guardians at OA, Sinestro (the renegade green lantern), Carol Ferris, and so on. Like The Flash, many of the characters come back for encores and give readers something they're familiar with - something to come home to.

This book, volume two in the GL series, is a fine addition to the growing DC Archive collection. Nicely hard bound, it consists of 222 full color pages on quality paper featuring 14 complete adventures of the Silver Age Green Lantern.

Features in this volume are the origin of Sinestro, how Green Lantern came up with his oath, and a battle between GL and the Flash. Great stories all.

If you enjoyed the Silver Age of DC comics -- if you liked the exploits of Green Lantern -- if you like well-done stories (for a comic book), this book will not disappoint you. It makes a fine addition to the first volume of the series. I hope they make a third.
