Usefulness in Forensic Psychology
I found this book to be highly readable, well indexed, and a valuable source for report writing and preparing court testimony. The research cited is current, validity and clinical scales well defined, and sources of bias clearly stated. In addition, ethical considerations and pitfalls of reliance on this testing instrument are provided. Excellent comparisons of the MMPI and MMPI-2 including modified, deleted, and new items. Extremely valuable for any psychologist going to court and explaining to a judge or jury to results and interpretations of this instrument.

An insightful and compelling look into a life and a marriage
The story of Nora and James Joyce's unconventional relationship and how it shaped the writings of one of history's most controversial authors. This book is nothing short of riveting, both in terms of the story it is telling and the way it is told. It explores the influence Nora held over Joyce in his life and his writing and gives countless examples of how he used the experiences of those around him in his books. More than anything, this is the story of a woman struggling to hold her life and her family together in the face of hardship after hardship. A truly incredible read that I couldn't put down until the last page - I even read the bibliography!

A portrait of the artist as a young man : a facsimile of epiphanies, notes, manuscripts, & typescripts

It changed my whole life.
In my past I have failed to examine the habitat of human nature in general. A Portrait of the Artist as a young man offered me the knowledge of religion and art tied in with the overwhelming story of a boy growing up. I found that James Joyce's writing was not only inspiring but also challenging. I found myself in the shoes of Stephen Dedalus, and truly believe in the traumatic story of his struggles in life in comparison with my own.

Very good for the undergrad. archit.and civil eng. students
1.I find it very important that Mr. Walker has emphasized the importance of teaching general management before entering into the realm of the complicated teaching of construction management. Constr. Mgt. is not an independent teaching, but a very special case of management. It has naturally to be based on the foundations of the GENERAL MANAGEMENT. Congratulations.. 2. He makes some original definitions of management. I highly appreciate his definitions like "Management is the dynamic input that makes the organization work.". However, I expected to find several chapters in this book, explaining the basic activities, general principles and the elements of management, EXACTLY what Henri Fayol has mentioned 100 years ago. 3. IEEE has updated Fayol's terminology at 1984, printed and distributed to its members, who lead the world's most important sector, electronics and computer industries, as a study of Prof. Irwin Gray from NewYork Inst. of Technology. This gives a very good idea about the freshness of Fayol's teachings. The, in construction mgt.mostly referred, famous Proj.Mgt. Institute is the worldwide known sub-org. of the IEEE, Inst. Of El.and Elktron. Eng.s in USa. 4. Every student of technical schools should be taugth management completely from Fayol's teachings,as they learn physics from Newton and Planck directly. I hope that the Author forgives the harsh expression of a veteran construction man: Anybody who teaches management should not attempt to find the definition of management from the "Shorter Oxford English Dictionary' 100 years later than Fayol's excellent definition; no need to explore America again. 5. I congragulate the Author for mentioning H.Mintzberg in his book.. His analogy of construction projects with Mintzberg's configurations Professional B-aucracy and Ad-hocracy, is to be blessed. This analogy gives a good idea about the complexity of the construction, but underestimates the complicated task of management of construction projecst. I kindly remind that there is not a real management in adhocracy, and is very little in the professional b-racy. Management of a construction site of average size can only be compared with the most complex configuration of H. M-berg: THE DIVISIONAL FORM, with its numerous crews, subcontractors of various contracrs, its logistics, accounting, perfformance evaluations, etc. 6. I expected the Author of this valuable book would teach organization to the technical u-grad students directly from the teachings of Mintzberd and save several chapters for his teachings.. 7. This book is one of the best of its category I have ever read, on construction mgt, keeping Dennis Lock's place at the top, I hope the Author finds my comments not more than a few constructive remarks, and may take them into consideration for the further editions. The Question of Irish Identity in the Writings of William Butler Yeats and James Joyce
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (1998)
Authors: Eugene O'Brien and Eugene C'Brien
Amazon base price: $109.95
Average review score:

European Dimensions of Irishness
This is a brilliant book. It's the first time I've read about the politics of Irish literature written in this way, and I've read a lot of books about Yeats and Joyce, as well as some theory. However, here, the fusion of both creates a work which is part of a new way of looking at Irishness along the lines of Gibbons, Kearney and Lloyd, though O'Brien would not be in complete agreement with some of their ideas. His discourse, however, is parallel to that of these writers. It's a different, more challenging, kind of Irish studies.
It's a difficult argument with a lot of complex theory coming at you from every angle. He makes use of Derrida, Levinas and Adorno to create the structure through which he views the writings of Yeats and Joyce, and their constructions of Irishness. In some ways, this is really two books, with an analysis of the theoretical difficulties of the creation of structures of identity as well as an application of this model to the work of Yeats and Joyce.

But, O'Brien writes clearly and some of the more arcane practitioners of critical and literary theory could take lessons from his style and argument. He discusses Joyce and Yeats in the context of their time, and then shows how they transcend that context through a placement of identity within an imaginary European context. He makes connections between Yeats and joyce (who are often seen as being at two different ends of the spectrum) and sees both as offering different but related perspectives on identity.
His close readings are acute and there is plenty of quotation.
It's a scholarly book, very good for postgraduates and people working in the field. perhaps only the brighter undergrads should attempt it.
Irish studies has needed this theoretical input for some time and it's good to see what we might call "high theory" being applied to such canonical figures.
It's a first book (I gather from the acknowledgments, and as such, is a stunning debut. I look forward to reading more, and from the Amazon search, it seems there are more on the way!

Reading Joyce Politically (Florida James Joyce Series)
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Florida (1997)
Authors: Trevor I. Williams, Trevor L. Williams, and Zack Bowen
Amazon base price: $55.00

Great to be able to understand a book that deals with theory
This is one of the best books on Joyce that I, a grad student, have read in a long time. It is superbly well written and makes Joyce relevant to what's going on today. The second chapter was a bit slow going, but the rest was really riveting stuff. Would recommend it for anyone who wants a good introduction to Dubliners, Portrait of the Artist, and Ulysses. Disappointing the author has nothing to say about Finnegans Wake.

At Five in The Afternoon
Motherwell was an articulate voice in this period of American non-objective painting...Motherwell was more literate than most of the artist of the New York School and therefore he went much further in bring out influence, inspiration and what he calls "Psychic Automotism". This is the automatic writing/drawing that the surrealist introduced as a means to tap into the subconcious wealth of material in the artist. This book is very good at exploring the mind of the artist. Of particular value are the comments made by Motherwell that are found throughout the book next to the beautiful reproductions. I also found the interveiw at the end of the book with Motherwell very interesting. Dore Ashton provides an informed reflection on the artist and Arnason's extended text goes far to follow the major themes and subjects of the painters life- The Elegies, Open Paintings, Wall paintings ,collages and Works on paper. Even attention to the Je'tem Paintings and his Ocher peices. I recommend this grand book to anyone who loves Motherwell's work. His was a sublime acheivement in the important mid century of American painting. Buy the book new- it is far and away cheaper than any of the used copies...

Unique, titillating, engaging and challenging
I was impressed by the perspective of the author that Joyce's characters are endowed with various forms of neurotic sexuality. A great deal of sensitivity to and admiration of the subject is evident in the writing. I would recommend the book to anyone who has tried to read Joyce and wants a scholarly viewpoint

Selected letters of James Joyce

Quite unique and absolutely fascinating.
This book contains a suite of new letters to Joyce's wife Nora and another to his benefactress Harriet Weaver, which have been abridged or excluded from previous editions. The explicit nature of these love letters makes them unlike anything you have read before. This book delivers the full Joyce - unabridged and uncensored.
