I have the original....
I have the original 1894 version of this book and have enjoyed it for many years. The perspective of battles is fresh in comparison to the history books of today. There is so much more in this book, the engravings and pictures are wonderful. I would highly recommend even a copy.
Stunning clarity, written with clear memory of the war
This review comes from a reading of the original 1894 edition. Filled with many obscure and forgotten details, this book is a treasure for Civil War historians. Songs, complete with full lyrics, as well as specific orders of battle give this reading a timely presence. Written in the traditional language of the era, the events have a kind of realism that brings you face to face with history. Originally this volume was sold by subscription only @ N.Y. BY KNIGHT AND BROWN. After having this book in my possession for many years it is very exciting to see that it has been reprinted at long last.
Campfire and Battlefield
The Civil War was the most important conflict the U.S. has ever been involved in, bar none. The military, ethical, and governmental consequences have been enormous. Campfire & Battlefield gives us a unique perspective of this great event.

Perfect
This book is perfect. I discovered it at my local library while working on my children's literature review file. I read it and was floored by how great it was and how I would not rest until I owned a copy of my very own. The book is tall and narrow just like the man himself. I especially liked the pictures of Abraham as a little boy. In so many other books, even children's books, Mr. Lincoln is portrayed as looking gruff his entire life. In this book, he smiles and grins and is adorable just like any other little boy. The book also has small ancedotes about his life which make Abraham more real to young children. The text handles the assassination in a way that is not as scary to young children. One of the most moving pictures is Lincoln's funeral train passing a field where both a black and white man were working, side by side, but had stopped to bow their heads. I read this book to a Kindergraten class and they were enchanted. I highly recommend this book for any classroom or school library. Enjoy!

A must-read for any fundamental Christian
Abraham Lincoln: The Christian leaves no doubt in the mind where Mr. Lincoln's heart was. Fundamentally sound faith is evident in Mr. Lincoln's writings and speeches. One of the greatest books on one of our finest presidents

Simply Racist Propaganda
The Tragic Era was considered a legitimate text book during the Depression and for many years afterward. However its historical view is pro-confederate, racist, and totally propagandistic. In this book you will find the arguement that slaves were happy and treated well, that after the Civil War the evil Northerners raped and pillaged the South unmercifully for 12 years, and that the angelic white men of the South only became racially bigoted because it was forced on them by the uppity freed slaves. This piece of trash is on the same quality level as Mein Kampf. If you want a realistic exploration of the Reconstruction period read Kenneth M. Stampp's "The Era of Reconstruction".
Compassionate and unflinching
It has become fashionable to cheer on the Reconstruction radicals and carpetbaggers who turned what might have been a period of healing and growth into a nightmare for many dispossessed Southerners. Read this (slightly creaky) old classic for a corrective view -- one that portrays William Lloyd Garrison, Thaddeus Stevens, et al as the zealous Utopian totalitarians that they were. V.S. Naipaul would understand this book.
