Not just for girls
After coaching, reffing, and helping to run leagues for 15+ years I am always on the lookout for ways to keep myself fresh and relevant to the kids I have the pleasure to deal with. If every coach could start with this book the world of soccer would be a funner place. This may not be the only book you ever need as you advance, but the broad range of advice, attitude, basic knowledge, and practical tips make this one a "must have". My only gripe is the title, there is some information specific to girls but so much of it is just plain good I hate to see someone miss it because the only coach or have boys.

Best Soccer Coaching Book I Have Read
This book was absolutely wonderful. I have coached many sports but never soccer until this past year. I read the book after the season and feel ready for the upcoming season. I learned so much about the game tactically and it was easy reading. John knows his subject. Would recommend it for any coach.

Quality advice for coaching girls soccer
I work with a top level youth soccer club as the Girls Director of Coaching. After reading Mr. Dewitt's book I feel that he has hit the nail on the head. The advice that he gives, while basic, is just what many new coaches need to start coaching girls soccer. The book covers all aspects of the game while still staying focused on the coaching skills need to work with girls.

Street Rodder Hall of Fame Pick
Just want to let everybody know that Jerry Weesner of Streetrodder (June 2002) picked Cool Cars, High Art as a Hall of Fame selection with only three other books on the art of customizing.

Blue Collar Art on Parnassus
This handsome book is an unusual treatment of its subject for sure. There is a bevy of color photographs to satisfy the aficionado--and to make it an ideal gift for any car-crazy friend. But what I find most striking is the author¹s truly unique take on the car as an art object. Obviously comfortable with the demands of current theoretical discourse, he seems purposefully to prove that the obscurantism that bedevils so much academic prose today is merely self-indulgent. He has helped me grasp much more than just the beauty of the customized car. Readers (and especially teachers in a number of disciplines) will appreciate Prof. DeWitt¹s cunning explications of a Williams poem, a Picasso collage, a Futurist sculpture, and a surprising number of movies and TV shows to support his insights into our car culture.

LVRR at it's best
Not just a great collector's item, but a well written story that one can't put down. The pictures draw you in and the writing makes you want more from this author. Their is too little written on this region that boasts a terrific rail history. There's something indescribable that keeps you pulling the book out and looking at it again and again.

Lehigh Valley Memories
Some well needed LVRR material from upstate New York. The pictures of the branch line action are GREAT.I keep on going back for more!!! I would like to see another come out with more photos of the upstate region.

Early Globalization and the Economic Development of the United States and Brazil

Global Economics Made Easy
Don't let the academic-sounding title of this book fool you. It was written for ordinary readers interested in how the United States came to be an economic superpower over a 500-year period and why a country of similar origins-Brazil-lags far behind. The two countries are similar in size, began as colonies of powerful European states in roughly the same era, and relied on slavery for early economic development.

In this highly readable book, Dr. John DeWitt, a former foreign service office and professor of geography, explains how the U.S. gained leadership in the global economy, along with Western Europe and Japan, while Brazil remains among the countries on the periphery, struggling to penetrate the inner circle. Other peripheral countries are Russia, China, Mexico, and India. Those still outside the circle are poor Third World nations. The book brings together a fascinating blend of economics, history, anthropology, sociology, and geography to tell the stories of the colonization and economic advancement of the U.S. and Brazil, starting in the14th century.

Until I read Dr. DeWitt's book, I considered global economics, history and geography too abstract and boring to hold my attention for more than a page or two. However, because this book was lent to me by a friend, I was determined to wade through at least a chapter or two. I've been unable to put it down. I'm amazed by the compelling story it tells. For the first time, I'm able to see economic development as a drama, with individual countries taking roles as interesting as characters in a Shakespearean play.

My only criticism of the book is that the title makes it sound dry. It's not. Dr. DeWitt's gift with words and his ability to tie complex ideas together gives untutored readers a new pair of glasses to see the world they live in.

Farmboy: Hard Work and Good Times on a Farm That Helped Change Northeast Agriculture
Published in Paperback by De Witt Historical Society (01 June, 1999)

Tales of growing up on a farm in the 2930s
Agricultural history threatens to be dull and tedious; hence this highly personal account of the adventures of the author from age 9 to 19 on a family farm in the Northeast. A series of vignettes describing chores and other farm work are interspersed with high humor, pranks and harsh physical effort.

The farm setting was the family home of aggricultural leader, economist and teacher, Howard E. Babcock, for years Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Ithaca's Cornell University. Introducing many new farm practices, he told readers of his popular page "Kernels, Screenings and Chaff," in the American Agriculturist magazine of new ways to manage grasslands, employ used auto tires to ease operation of farm equipment. He counseled them to buy open-formula farm feeds from the huge farm cooperative he organized and managed, The GLF (now Agway).

Babcock also introduced farmers and ultimately all consumers, to prepare and consume frozen farm produce and meats. Home freezers were one of the most important contributers to improved diet and life style not only of farmers, but all consumers.

Young John Babcock tells of shooting woodchucks and rats, tending livestock, and operating new farm machines that his dad started to promote in the midst of the Depression decade. After the 1933 Bank Holiday, loan rates fell to the lowest in many years.

Life was hard, but this farm family never missed a meal, nor the chance to enjoy life to its fullest in an era marked by sweeping change. I submit it as a high spirited and readable account.
