I met Herbert Anderson at a men's retreat sponsored by my church and he spoke on just one chapter of this book. I purchased a copy that weekend and read it cover to cover in a day. I found myself moved by his story and the connections his words, and the story of Jacob, made in my life. I heartily recommend this book to every man who is a father, grandfather, husband, friend, colleague. It is an insightful and compassionate book that will help you along your spiritual journey. Anderson does an incredible job of reflecting on the many facets of being a man and a man who loves and serves Christ. He challenges men to delve deeper into their lives exploring relationships,emotions, loves and friendships and their impact on self and others. He challenges common notions of "Christian Man" and their behaviors, feelings and reactions. He examines everyday events that happen to men and opens up a new dimension on how men can learn and interpret from those experiences. It has truly challenged me to examine myself, my relationships and the fullness of being a man, and a man who serves Christ.

I read Jacob's Shadow on the recommendation of a friend and came to it with the scepticism that a man who in fact needs a book like this might be expected to bring to it. I found myself seduced by its clarity and was grateful for its lessons. In ten chapters the book covers ten areas of living in which men might well encounter challenges and benefit from wise advice gently offered. The need for men to acknowlege vulnerability and then confront that vulnerability with courage is both a chapter and an overall theme. In fact, in writing Jacob's Shadow Herbert Anderson made himself vulnerable and in doing so has given the reader a gift which is more than mere words.

I am no expert on this subject, but I was able to learn a lot in a short time. The authors compare the interrelationship of the Courts and politics in the United States, England, France, Germany and Japan. The book is well structured and easy to read. "Apples" are compared with "apples" in each section of the book, providing the reader with a cogent comparison of these systems. If you are interested in comparative law or just want to learn about the legal systems of one or more of these countries, this book is worth reading.

If you have dreams "getting back to the land" and becoming a small-scale farmer, this book is an excellent primer for what you'll be getting into, with plenty of solid information about what to do if you make the big leap. Although some might say this is a bit dated in the era of corporate mega-farms--and it could use more emphasis on organic farming--there is plenty of timeless information presented in a simple, succinct format that will definitely be worth many times the small amount you need to buy this book. It's all presented in a common-sense, practical and bright style--it's a classic. Subjects covered include: How to raise dairy beef and cattle, sheep, hogs and chickens; cash crops and truck farming; grassland farming; orchard, woodlot and fencecrows; and beekeeping. Also includes how to choose your land and how to get the money to get started.

Herbert Jacob has presented a brilliant, scholarly analysis about how "no-fault" divorce laws became the law of the land - silently and insidiously. His extremely thorough research taps interviews with key players around the table during divorce law "reform" efforts in the late-60's. Jacob's sources include legislators, law professors, and practicing divorce-attorneys. He also describes the work of the Uniform Law Commission, a secretive, quasi-governmental, law-writing body that, through its legitimizing role, precipitated enactment in all the states of laws similar to California's 1969 breakthrough "no-fault" divorce law. This is a must-read for those who agonize over the country's high divorce rate and want to inform themselves about its origin. Policymakers can benefit, too, by reading about the consequences of rubber-stamping the work of professional groups - like the ULC - without demanding outcome-measurements to check on the future effects of such law-changes. The title of this book is matter-of-fact but it could have been subtitled "The Insidious Overthrow of Secure Marriage in the United States While No One Noticed". This is an excellent guide for elementary and mathematics teachers and practitioners, especially for those who feel that urgent need to "gain insight into children's minds" in order to teach effectively. The book advocates the use of flexible interviewing - the technique developed by Jean Piaget- by teachers in their classroom, as an efficient assessment and teaching method. Written in a very clear , simple but comprehensive style, and, based on experimental classroom practices, this book explains how to prepare students for the Thinking-Oriented classroom , presents the different possible uses of flexible interviewing in the classroom: individual, group and peer interviewing.. It includes a step-by-step guidelines on how to conduct a flexible interview and a valuable sampler of questions ready to be used by teachers. Although this book is self-sufficient, it would be very helpful for anybody new to the flexible interviewing to consult Ginsburg's previous book:"Entering the Child's Mind". Finally,I have to say that I found that book very convincing: once you read it, you feel you have to start acting

Finally, I would recommend this book not only for the desperate insomniacs out there, but for EVERYONE, since it contains lots of useful and expert information that we ALL can use from time to time.

I was down to 0ne hour per night and felt like I was going crazy with lack of sleep. This book gave me a peace of mind and helped me to understand what the cause was and that it was in my own ability to cure myself. I now get 7-8 hours a night. It changed almost instantly. Get this book. It will change your sleep for the better.

This book is the best book I have read on sleep. In particular it addresses long term chronic insomnia very well and provides a way to end this hellish nightmare. The treatment of sleeping pills is especially insightful. While reading, I found myself nodding my head in agreement constantly, realizing that here was a sleep professional who actually understood the problem so many people face in isolation. What a welcome relief from others who provide no solutions. I highly recommend this book.

I think the glimpse of the personality of Frank Lloyd Wright is the most fascinating part of this book. You comprehend what a "pain" he was to work with and then you realize that he had the big picture and was trying to create a "timeless work of art" and the Jacobs' were just "not getting it". They didn't seem to understand that to make things work out correctly they needed to follow the details of the plans. Parts of the book, including chapters 18 and 19 are a trip down memory lane for them and offer the reader little information about their building experience. The black and white photos which illustrate this book were shot from 1936 to 1959. This is not a coffee table book like 50 Favorite Furnishings by Frank Lloyd Wright , and 50 Favorite Rooms by Frank Lloyd Wright by Diane Maddex. This book makes me curious about the famous architect whose style is timeless. An architect who could design a house of beauty and style for the common man -"the Usonia".

This is an an excellent book, written by the owners on the construction of their two Wright house designs - Jacob I & Jacobs II Solar Hemicycle. Each chapter outlines the process of design, construction drawings , materials selection and construction itself, Owner built by the owners - to save money- it is full of b & w photos of each stage, and some of the plans. The book illustrates how the simple plans are put into action and reveal the intricate structural solutions that Wright developed. For the architect in you, you will mullover the photos and plans working out in you own mind how this was put together. Both extraordinary designs for their time, this book will inspire you to have a home like them.

"Schaum's easy outline:organic chemistry" is a packbackable book that is affordable for your budget. However, as it is an outline, it only functions as a guideline: briefly contains the very main topics in organic chemistry. My reccomendation is to use this book as a guide only because your organic textbook (whatever it is, mine is Brown and Foote's Organic Chemistry) has more details and good explanations.

Overall, I was pretty satisfied with this book. It contained a lot of general information as well as specific examples. To make the most out of the book, you need a pretty good understanding of organic chemistry to begin with. I used it after reading my own textbook, and then read this book to reemphasize the information. it helped me check my understanding of the material.

I though this was George W's gaffes, but it turns out his father mispoke quite a bit himself. A little bit too politically motivated, these people obviously had no idea how much worse things could get when his son would be elected, er, annointed, or ah, democratically- you know what I mean!

Is intelligence learned or inherited? It's a question that has puzzled scientists and philosophers since the beginning of time. On the one hand, you can argue that this book proves the latter conviction, since it's obvious that Papa Bush is as grammatically challenged as baby Bush, but on the other hand, who taught Baby to speak? Seriously though, this book is hilarious, a welcome companion piece to more recent versions attacking the more recent Bush. I've owned it since it came out and it still makes me laugh. If you can find it, buy it.

If you are looking for symbolism or imagery I might suggest a different book, but for some of the funniest quotes this side of Yogi Berra I definitly recommed "Bushisms". (Of course if you are a big Bush/Republican fan AND have NO sense of humor this one may not be for you.)

Very few of the Schaum's outline series are helpful. This one is no exception. It does nothing to clarify the confusing concepts. All it does is provide more problems. Anyone taking organic chemistry knows that it is hard enough to have time to do all the problems in the assigned textbook let alone do more from this book. Furthermore,the answers to the questions are poorly explained. Save your time and money and check out your school library for other helpful books instead.

What you should remember about the Schaum's series is that all of them, though they may call themselves "outlines," are in fact rather cheap textbooks. They include many more solved problems than your standard textbook, but they are also not as slick or nice to look at.

The organic chemistry outline can be helpful to you, perhaps. The main draw is that each chapter includes a summary of reactions that might be worth it... if, that is, you already know which reactions are more useful than others. The amount of information is great, and this may make it difficult for you to sort out which ones are worth your attention.

The Schaum's outlines are, in my opinion, great for those motivated students who would like to gain some knowledge of the subject. They can also help when you are stuck with a problem, as chances are you will find a solved problem in the book that is at least similar. Whether that is worth the cost is another question.

Schaum's outlines are perfect for what they propose to do -- give the student as much practice as possible. They are experience tools, not teaching tools. The secret to doing well in genchem/orgchem is to practice, practice practice. The more problems you do, the better you will become. Concepts and theories are only half the game in chemistry.
