Great Resource
This children's book is a fantastic resource for the Grade 10 English Language Arts program in Saskatchewan. It coincides with the idea of symbols and racial tensions and rights and responsibilities that the students learn about. It is too bad that it is out of print.

Parents can help kids absorb the somewhat difficult theme
Roberto Innocenti and J. Patrick Lewis' Last Resort tells of an artist's imagination which abruptly disappears. His quest to recover it leads him to a remote seaside hotel where he finds other seekers. The illustrations are gorgeous and parents can help kids absorb the somewhat difficult theme.

Powerful and quietly moving
This beautiful picture book will help make the Holocaust accessible to very young readers. Rose Blanche is a deeply moving story that will affect nearly all who read it. The detailed illustrations are drawn from a perspective that gives the reader a sense of security whilst offering a vivid view of the fate of others not so secure. Because this story is an allegory, it can be appreciated by readers of many ages. On one level, this is simply the story of one girl, Rose Blanche, finding out for herself what is happening to her countrymen and trying to help. On another level, Rose Blanche stands for all who helped the Jews, even though to do so meant certain death for the rescuers. This quiet book inspires courage.

Wow!! This Picture book works....
Wow!! This picture book works on so many different levels. I just read it to my 23 sixth graders. Very powerful stuff. As an introduction to the Holocaust, I'd rank this book # 1...it will evoke a boatload of questions amongst your readers (and listeners!). Excellent writing craft to study!! The unfolding of the story will make readers predict and predict. "I wonder..." questions will surface at the end of this book..."What really happened to Rose Blanche?" framed a long, rich discussion in our class!...
Buy it, read it, buy one for a friend!!

Rose Blanche--A must-have for all teachers!
I was first introduced to Rose Blanche by my Children's Literature professor at North Iowa Area Community College. This had to be the most deeply moving children's story I have ever had the pleasure to read. Although, I have a difficult enough time presenting the book to adults, I think that it is a story that should be in teacher's classrooms across the country. This story has more depth and heart than any other depiction of the Holocaust I have ever been exposed to. Highly recommended.

school project
Cinderella lived with her two step-sisters. They gave her the nickname Cinderseat. They were really mean to her and made her do things for them. The king's son was to give a ball and everyone was invited. When the day came Cinderella began to cry and her godmother appeared and made her get a pumpkin, which she turned into a coach. She then turned mice into horses, and a rat into a coachman. Then dressed her in a beautiful dress and glass slippers. When she arrived she danced with the prince, but she had to leave before midnight. She left without telling anyone her name or anything. The next night they went to another ball and she left right before midnight in rags, and left one glass slipper behind. He checked around trying the slipper on everyone. When Cinderella tried it on it fit her perfectly, and the prince realized she was the mysterious girl he had danced with before and they were to be married. I think this is a good story for kids to read, because Cinderella was really nice to her step-sisters who were always so mean to her after everything.

What the Christmas spirit is all about.
Just as Clement Moore gave us the definitive Santa Claus in "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (a.k.a. "The Night Before Christmas"), Charles Dickens gave us the definitive Christmas spirit in his simple but charming novella "A Christmas Carol". First published in 1843, this supernatural story of an elderly man's redemption from his mean-spirited, miserly ways takes place in Victorian London, but its universal theme of charity towards our fellow man has endeared this classic to many a generation around the globe. In addition to its priceless role as a morality tale, the book colorfully describes the Yuletide customs practiced in England during the early nineteenth century. This Washington Square Press edition of "A Christmas Carol" is unabridged, yet you can understand why so short a book is yet published in abridged versions, especially for schoolchildren. Not infrequently, Dickens veers from the main story line and goes into tangents of a philosophical or descriptive nature, much like the converser who abruptly changes the subject only to return to it with the familiar "Anyway, ... ". I assume children (and some adults) may find these tangents cumbersome and distracting, but they are still useful in that they reflect Dickens' thoughts while writing the book. It may still be difficult for some of us to think that cold-hearted Christmas-bashers like Ebenezer Scrooge exist, but look at human nature around you, and it will be difficult no more. At a time when "Merry Christmas" is being supplanted by a more vague "Happy Holidays", and the season gives way to coarse behavior and unchecked materialism, "A Christmas Carol" is the perfect guidebook to put things into perspective.

A Timeless Christmas Tradition
Master storyteller and social critic, Charles Dickens, turns this social treatise on shortcomings of Victorian society into an entertaining and heartwarming Christmas ghost story which has charmed generations and become an icon of Christmas traditions. Who, in the Western world has not heard, "Bah, Humbug!" And who can forget the now almost hackneyed line of Tiny Tim, "God bless us, every one!" or his cheerfully poignant observation, that he did not mind the stares of strangers in church, for he might thus serve as a reminder of He who made the lame, walk and the blind, see. Several movie versions: musical, animated, updated, or standard; as well as stage productions (I recall the Cleveland Playhouse and McCarter Theatre`s with fondess.) have brought the wonderful characterizations to the screen, as well as to life. This story of the redemption of the bitter and spiritually poor miser, and the book itself; however, is a timeless treasure whose richness, like Mrs Cratchit`s Christmas pudding, is one that no production can hope to fully capture.

The original "Carol"
It's hard to think of a literary work that has been filmed and staged in more imaginative variations than Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol"--there's the excellent George C. Scott version, the delightful Muppet version, the charming Mr. Magoo version, etc., etc. But ultimately true "Carol" lovers should go back to Dickens' original text, which remains a great read.

"Carol" tells the story of cold-hearted miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who despises the Christmas holiday and scorns all who celebrate it. But a visit from a series of supernatural beings forces him to reevaluate his attitude--and his life.

With this simple plot Dickens has created one of the enduring triumphs of world literature. It's a robust mix of humor, horror, and (most of all) hope, all leavened with a healthy dash of progressive social criticism. One thing I love about this book is that while it has a focus on a Christian holiday, Dickens puts forth a message that is truly universal; I can imagine this story resonating with people of any religious background, and also with more secular-oriented people.

This is a tale of greed, selfishness, regret, redemption, family, and community, and is enlivened by some of the most memorable characters ever created for English literature. Even if Dickens had never written another word, "A Christmas Carol" would still have, I believe, secured his place as one of the great figures of world literature.

Fresh perspective on an old tale.
Sweet telling of the old story. The illustrations are the recommending factor here. I personally was touched by this version because it is the only Cinderella I have seen portrayed with dark hair.

A Unique and Compelling Cinderella
If you are a Cinderella fan, this book, illustrated by Roberto Innocenti, is a must. I have read countless versions of Cinderella and looked at numerous illustrations. I have never seen the story treated like this. Innocenti sets Cinderella in the 1920s with flapper clothes and cars (instead of a pumpkin carriage). Never fear, a glass slipper is still here. I am usually tired of Cinderella books, to be honest, but this one kept me turning pages to see what was going to happen. I have become selective in my Cinderella purchases, but I had to own this one.

The ISBN for the Roberto Innocenti version is 1568461305. The reviews for the different versions of Cinderella sometimes get confused, but this is the book you will want to get.

World's Classics Abridgement?
I can't see why an abridgement is necessary for Pinnochio under any circumstances. The book is very short and no chapter could fill more than two typed pages. Any child should be able to digest the unabridged translation. When you strip a story down to a mere plot summary, you remove the details which make literature exciting and stimulating for both children and adults. Perhaps this is marketed toward extremely busy parents who don't have the five minutes it takes to read an entire chapter aloud.

Indeed this is a "World's Classic." I would like to see it preserved as the author intended.

Collodi good, abridgement bad.

This movie is so awsome!!!
I indeed agree that this movie is a wonderful movie, it was funny, and sad...but that just makes it even more great....I was wondering if anyone doesn't mind helping me, I need to buy the CD Soundtrack to this movie..Can anyone help me???

A story for and about children
Collodi knew how mischievous children can be.He was one himself when he went to school in Flroence. In his later years,he was a school reforms official, and wrote many textbooks. He believed the best way to teach is by entertaining as well. This certainly shows in Pinocchio. The little Blockhead gets into all kinds of scrapes because he rushes into things with little consideration.Pinocchio is tricked by the Fox&Cat, advised by the Talking-Cricket,helped by the Fairy with Blue Hair-and ultimately realizes that if he wants to become a real boy,his inner self must be transformed first. The final chapter is a true indication of how Pinocchio has fully become a son to Gepetto.Collodi's story has many film-television-stage versions, but the original is a true classic.
