David Duke critiques his critics
I find it interesting that the editor of this college textbook (source book)about my campaigns and the politics of race in the South went out of his way not to ask me for an essay on the subject. Is this book supposed to be an unbiased academic survey of my impact on the politics of race in the South, when every article is hostile toward me and my ideology? Would it not be appropriate to include an analysis by the man at the very center of the controversy? I am sick of the so-called academic community, which is supposed to support diversity of opnion and open-mindedness, repeatedly preventing students from getting all sides of important issues. How can students taking a course where this textbook is used, obtain a balanced view of these important issues when they purposely are prevented from hearing from the person at the very center of the controversy.

I don't blame students from having a negative opinion about me and my political methods and ideology when they are not allowed to hear my side of the story.

Those that are interested in hearing my position articulated in detail can order my book, My Awakening from Amazon. Only then can you truly make a fair assessment of myself and the vital issues which propelled my candidacy.

A Response to Duke
Unfortunately for Mr. Duke, it appears that he is headed for Federal Prison for a few months. Hopefully, he'll take the time to actually read our book so he can provide us with a more informed review that is constructive, rather than just self-aggrandizing. We'd enjoying hearing his informed thoughts, which could be quite interesting. Maybe, just maybe, then I'll read "My Awakening" and review it for Mr. Duke.

good book for scholars/researchers, even if not for Duke!
I thought this was a good and comprehensive volume on the whole "politics of race in the South" motif, and have found it useful in my research. The fact that Duke apparently thinks it should have been about lionizing himself and his pseudo-intellectualized racism (e.g. his amazon.com review) isn't surprising, but it's a solid point in favor of this book, if you ask me. Good social science and interesting perspective in most of these chapters, backed by reasoned analysis of the larger picture-- the rebirth of race as a divisive issue in regional (and national?) politics. Funny how this title is now 5 years old, but still speaks to things like the current confederate flag controversy in South Carolina. Emphasis on electoral phenomena, but enough to keep a public policy-oriented type interested as well.

Only the obvious copied and pasted
This book I found rather disappointing. It is DEFINITELY for the beginner. So much that most information is nearly copied from all the help information provided during the installation process itself.

If you are a beginner I would not recommend buying this book. Look for something else!!

Definitely for the beginner
This book was very easy to follow, but I didn't learn very much that wasn't already available in the Linux documentation.

When I got this book, I had already been using UNIX at work. I just needed some guidance in installing Linux the first time at home. This book proved to be too shallow for me.

Got me going...
I started my server with this book and the man pages that it suggested helped a little. It does not have the heavier network admin information that you need once you get running. If you are trying to configure multiple nic's, sendmail, web hosting or any of the standard things, you need to get something else. But if you want to set up a basic network, this is the best starter book i have used.

Arthur C. Clarke & Lord Dunsany: A Correspondence
Published in Paperback by Anamnesis Press (01 July, 1998)
Authors: Arthur C. Clarke, Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett Dunsany, and Keith Allen Daniels
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Great thinkers, boring correspondance
Arthur C. Clarke is most well-known for writing 2001: A Space Odyssey; Lord Dunsany for his fantastic The King of Elfland's Daughter and serving as a primary influence for H.P. Lovecraft. For such gifted writers, this correspondance is remarkably dull - mostly an eager, young, as-yet-unpublished Clarke fawning to his hero, who seems grateful for the attention. This collection is well-meaning but almost completely meritless.

A fascinating book
Fenbug needs to get hir facts straight. Arthur C. Clarke was already a published author when he began to correspond with Lord Dunsany in 1944, and by 1956 -- the last year of their correspondence -- Clarke had published some of his best classic fiction, most notably Childhood's End (1953).

If engaging in reasoned dialogue on topics as fascinating as space exploration and imaginative literature is "fawning," then so be it.

This book is a valuable resource for literary scholars, fans of Clarke and/or Dunsany, and anyone with an interest in the early years of the Space Age. Keith Allen Daniels is to be commended for his editorial and publishing acumen, and for his understanding of the importance of these letters.

Excellent but only for scholars
I feel attracted by the comparative scope of this book. After reading it, I come to the conclusion that it was written by a scholar for other scholars, because of two features: i) excellent content, showing the state of the art, and offering its own very interesting synthesis on the matter, combined with; ii) extremely arid form, which full and deadly boring detail of archeological sites. Both thing are truth, therefore I have rated the book as 3 , because its content deserves 5 starts but because if its dryness only 1. Therefore, if you are extremely interested in the subject, buy for your illustration, not to enjoy the reading.

The book is a bit incoherent, since it jumps around eras. But it gives a lot of interesting detail. It was good to learn one good feature on Neolithic living, lots of pistachios.

Better study guides are available.
I purchased the guide to help me study for the PE. This book is divided into several chapters, each covering a different area of mechanical engineering. The chapters were written by various contributing authors. Although some of the chapters were helpful in my studies, overall I was very disappointed with the book. There are numerous errors in the formulas and example problems which can lead to a lot of time wasted on figuring out why your answer does not agree with theirs. For example, a good deal of the text from a chapter on kinematics and dynamics of machinery came from Norton's book Design of Machinery. However, the PE review author did not copy some of the equations correctly. Fortunately, I had both books so I could find the discrepancy with a minimum of wasted time.

Another disappointment was the chapter on control systems. Most of the chapters had several example problems so that you could see how to solve them. However, the control systems had only three problems, two of which were on how to find transfer functions. The information in the chapter was difficult to follow and instead I relied on my undergraduate books.

Also disappointing was that the answers to the problems from each chapter were in a separate book. The author claims that this was done so that you could bring the review book into the exam with you. However, to the best of my knowledge, in every state you are allowed to bring any material that you wish with you to the exam.

A better option for a review book would be Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the Pe Exam : For the Pe Exam by Michael R. Lindeburg. This title is available from Amazon.com.

No mater which book you choose, in the end you need to study pretty hard to pass this exam. Good luck with your studies.
