Making LIfe Work by: Bill Hybel (softcover addition)
This book outlines practical points from the book of Proverbs. I really enjoyed the examples, and many great points were made. This is also a good book for following within a small group.

The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is more in-depth.
Bill Hybels picks 12 themes from the book of Proverbs and relates how he applies them in his own life and uses related verses from other books of the Bible to expound on those topics. It is an interesting discussion of practical highlights from Proverbs. For a more in-depth Biblical commentary on Proverbs which puts these ancient wise sayings in their historical context read THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. It features 6 translations in parallel to aid understanding and uses characters from the Bible to illustrate Solomon's witty observations on human nature.

Can't say enough
Making life Works is a wonder book to go by for everyday living. Mr Hybels uses the proverbs for every aspect of life. Don't miss out on this wonderful read for living a chrisitan life

Honest to God: Becoming an Authentic Christian

An Inauthentic commentary attacking the Church
As with all of Hybels other writings, the concepts are shallow and unchallenging. Hybels fear of "offending" the reader lead him to write how he teaches, a watered down, powerless gospel. It's interesting he recently interviewed Bill Clinton live at his church. Hybels believes Clinton to be a great leader and example for other leaders to follow. This book is not worth the paper it is printed on!

This book is required reading for the devoted believer
Bill Hybels always manages to reach me where I live, and his practical advice on being honest with yourself, being honest with God, finding time and methods to pray, study God's word and journal has helped me immensely in my daily walk. I only wish that this book had been written and I had been made aware of it when I was a new believer.

Besides an NIV Bible, anything Bill writes, but particularly this book should be required reading for disciples.

Practical, Pertinent and Personally Powerful...A Must read!
I love Bill Hybels heart. He is so passionate about being real and Christlike - He has this wonderful bent for doing something useful with what he knows. I find his insights true to life and his suggestions to be field tested and generally useful. It seems he leaves few stones unturned in his quest for authenticity as he relates it to:
*The role of spiritual disciplines
*Womens liberation issues
*Understanding Masculinity
*Truth telling-in relationships
*Parenting
*Work
*Christian service
*Money
*Exercise
The strength of this book, in my estimation, is not in the "knowing" part of Christianity but rather the "doing". His focus is always about becoming something different from what we've learned - I admire and appreciate that so much.

I have found Hybels teaching to be particularly helpful in applying biblical principles to contemporary concerns and daily living that truly impact me.
I find his writing style to be encouraging, clear, theologically sound and generally devoid of "Churchy" language. In particular, I found the chapters in this book on:
"A new dimension in Spirituality",
"Truth-telling: pathway to authentic relationships" and
"Honest emotions",
particularly encouraging and useful in addressing particular needs in my own Christian walk. I believe this is a must read for folks, who like myself, desire a deeper spiritual walk and need help getting "traction" on our part in the maturity process.

I highly recommend this book, I believe it is a text you will come back to time and again.

Good for New Believers
This study does a great job of working step by step through the scriptures with a lot of references to back the author's points. If you are looking for a study for a group of new believers, this is definately it!! The only reason I didn't give this study 5 stars, was that it wasn't as challenging for long-time believers as others I've done.

Thought Provoking
Hybels does a good job handling such an important topic. He lays out the obvious on the first day of the devotional week, and he moves deeper as it goes on. The final result is you thinking about applications for the Commandments that you never before considered. A very good book.

Great book for learning the ropes of preaching
This is a great book for everyone who is in ministry. It goes from identifying what the audience is like today and what their needs are, to how to preach tough issues, such as sex, money, and power. The authors write in clear language, each of them citing real life examples making the concepts that much more understandable. This is an especially applicable book for the inexperienced teacher, emphasizing the basics of good preaching. This is a very solid book, good for anyone's library.

Wonderful for individual or group study!
We have used this book as a study guide/course outline in our Sunday School class. It has some excellent questions that really make you think about how you are raising your own child. This would not only be a great book for newlyweds but it would also be a good book for parents that already have children --- It's never too late!

I was so glad it was available for a reference book to keep! Enjoy. You'll learn so much.

Slowing Down
This book is a really fast read. Bill Hybels kept me turning the pages with new insights and wisdom into spending time with God. It really helped me to refocus, and slow down a busy life in order to spend it with God. I totally recommend this book for people who are interested in prayer, or just busy and needing to slow down their lives

No references to Scripture
All references and resources are to nonchristian or non scriptural sources. I keep expecting Willow Creek to throw a Godapaloozafest.

Good concept but too complex
The book has a great title and a good concept but it is simply too long and too complex to be useful. This book teaches that change must be slow and you must win people over to your side through vision casting and good communication. This book does an excellent job teaching how to facillitate change, but it should have done it in 200 fewer pages.

No Pain, No Gain
One of the unchanging aspects of the world in which we live is that change happens, constantly. And if that's confusing thought, so are our daily lives, as we struggle to find constancy in the often chaotic flow of personal and community activity. Thank God for the church, which never changes! Except that, what fails to change, dies. That's what's been happening in my own church, but I didn't understand the processes involved, and was therefore feeling a bit helpless. Fortunately, God is a great big GOD, and answers prayers. Mine was for insight and wisdom, and this book has provided both. When I first read it, the resonance I experienced was astounding. My church, like so many in America, is a bastion of TRUTH, and yet is failing to touch the lives of the unchurched in our community. And lately, it seems that we are losing the battle even with our own church attenders. What I now believe is that we've failed to be relevant to the lives of the people in our community, including those who have been filling our seats on Sundays. This book is a guided study for change in the spiritual community. It provides motivation and method, and maintains a sound scriptural basis for the process. It is not a bandaid, but a complete course of treatment, not covering over fundamental problems, but forcing them into the sometimes harsh light of honest evaluation and remedy. (Warning: Change is painful, but unavoidable. It will happen. Unless embraced and guided in the right direction, change will happen to you, for the worse, instead of happening because of you, for the better.) I recommend this book highly for all those interested in helping their whole church to obey Christ's command to "...Go therefore and make disciples of all nations...". Both your church, and you personally, will experience the sense of fulfillment and joy that comes with following Him.
