What bittersweet memories
Well what a read. This book covers the history of the Roys from the clubs foundation to its sad expulsion from the AFL in 1996. If any fan had a doubt about how glorious a history our club had then this book is a must. So many 'firsts' were achieved by this club, so much tradition, so much spirit....and all this meant nothing to the powers that be. Tons of great pictures from the 19th century to the modern era and at the end of the book, a complete record of every person who ever played a senior game for the Lions. Perhaps a new edition could be made to cover the clubs rebirth in the VFL as Coburg-Fitzroy, as well as covering the Brisbane Lions. This book is a great read and a must for any true fan of the Fitzroy FC.
Metal Foams: A Design Guide

Let's get foaming!
Ashby et al have made a timely and very useful contribution to the literature of metal foams. The book will provide an essential resource to designers, developers and researchers in this exciting emerging field. The coverage is very thorough with material on manufacturing methods, design, economics and current applications. The section on web resources is very topical.
Help for the uninitiated
I have been using this book for my research for the past year. Over all the this design guide by Ashby is excellent. It is well written for those who do not have any background in design using metal and polymer foams. The chapters are short and concise. If, after reading this book, you want to dig deeper in the world of foam, then read Cellular Solids by Lorna Gibson.

Politics of Pre-revolutionary Boston
John Galvin guides the reader through Boston politics in the fifteen years preceding the Revolution, 1760-1775. Mr. Galvin focuses on the three men he contends were the most influential in the events in Boston in the pre-revolutionary years (Thomas Hutchinson, James Otis, and Samuel Adams).Very readable and a good source of behind-the-scenes activity that led to the beginning of the American Revolution.
Solid research and fascinating intellectual inquiry
Author John R. Galvin explores the personalities of three key figures whose actions and discourses constituted the roots of the American Revolution. Galvin's admirable scholarly discipline and his keen analysis deserve praise. His scope is very precise: it begins and ends with the period where Hutchinson, Adams, and Otis were interacting. Readers interested in Hutchinson, Adams, or Otis should read this book to gain a deeper insight into their personal philosophies and into the political struggles and challenges which made or defeated them, and which ultimately constituted the unyielding backdrop of their social existence and historical judgement. Readers interested in mid-18th century Massachussetts or American politics will learn much about the many groups and organizations of the period.

Great on content, just a little dry
If you're the ultimate policy wonk on 2nd Amendment law, you'll want to read this book just for John Knox's insights into the character of Justice McReynolds who wrote the decision in U.S. v. Miller, 1939. Unfortunately, Knox was no longer clerking for McReynolds in 1939, so we miss the inside story on that landmark decision, but after you've read this book you'll better understand why Miller makes so little sense.

Great Resource for the Medieval History Buff
From Abd al-Rahman III to zygian, this book is a wonderful resource of people and terms regarding ancient and medieval warfare up through the 1500's. It lists battles and wars, heroes, great commanders as well as ordinary fighting men. Some of the more important subjects are detailed in longer, separately boxed articles. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating is due to its lack of illustrations. Otherwise, a great book.

Raising our children out of poverty
This book, which has also been co-published simultaneously in the journal Social Thought (1999;19(2)), came out of a symposium at the St. Louis University School of Social Service at the sponsorship of the Doerr Center for Social Justice, Education and Research. The contributors to the six chapters with topics like Compassion, solidarity and empowerment; Welfare reform and foster care; Delinquency prevention; Collaborative practice in low income communities; Fostering resiliency in children and Ecumenical housing all came from authors within the field of social work. Data from the United States on poor children (The state of America's children yearbook, Washington, DC: Children's Defence Fund, 1998) has shown that three in five poor children are white, one in five live in suburban areas, one in three live in a family with married parents and two in three live in a working family. In 1973 14.4% of all children in America were poor, but in spite of a better economy that figure climbed to 20.5% in 1996. For young families in America the child poverty rate doubled from 20% in 1973 to 41% in 1994 and all these increases even though the federal government had implemented welfare reforms to prevent poverty. The chapter by Nancie Palmer from Wasburn University on "Fostering resiliency in children" based on her doctoral work from 1991 on exploring resiliency in adult children of alcoholics was interesting reading. She introduces the Differential Resiliency Model (DRM) as an alternative and non-pathological approach to the study of children and families, who are coping daily with adversity. She sees resilience as an evolving process and while one person can display one of four types of resilience (anomic survival, regenerative, adaptive and flourishing resilience) this person may develop growth through new challenges and through homeostasis, coping strategies, relationships to environment or the use of energy the person will be able to survive. This book is recommended for workers in social work or perofessionals working with poor or disorganized families.

Poorly researched
The book is erratic and totally misleading from a Red Cross perspective. Although there are some real gems in this book its far too large and copious and the historical interpretation is biased toward the red cross and barely mentions any thing about the "tainted blood" scandle that's absolutely critical to the history of the RC. There's nothing here that even mentions the war time record of the red cross, the partnership with the St John organization or the contribution the red cross has made in the social fabric of the western world - in fact the author condemns the St John Ambulance with weak and inexcusable exhortations about "who's better" (shame shame). There isn't anything substantial about the VON either. The book is sickly sweet and doesn't even come close to a good, historical account of the origins of the war effort for a voluntary service organization in the british tradition. blah blah blah...
Organizational history.
Hutchinson, a history professor at Canada's Simon Fraser University, exhaustively recounts the early history of the Red Cross from its origins in the 1860's to the 1920's, finding an untoward identification with militarism in the age of total war.
Starting with its pacifist beginnings, issues and organizational philosophy are thoroughly discussed, but those interested in the actual wartime operations of the organization are advised to look elsewhere, as these matters are hardly touched upon in this work.
