A Primer in centering prayer
This little book is a reflective how-to manual on continuous prayer/meditation. It takes the reader step by step to the point where he or she is ready to practice what today we would call the centering prayer. It was the text for a workshop on prayer I recently attended, and all of the participants agreed it was a great help. It's also a great guide to books and movies that deal with prayer and meditation.
Super!
I wish Walters has written this book 25 years ago, when I was struggling (fruitlessly) with prayer. My failure to make any sort of meaningful connection soured me on the whole thing for the next twenty years. Walters hits the nail on the head in this step-by-step retreat on prayer/meditation. The problem I made years ago, and the problem too many other people make, is that we try too hard when it comes to praying. Letting go is a lot more difficult than grabbing onto. Anybody who wants a richer prayer life will cherish this little book.
I've read it twice
I don't much like your typical retreat or howtodoit spirituality book, but this one is different. The best way to describe it is a Zen approach to Xtian prayer, where the reader/retreatist discovers that he's the riddle that needs to be solved. Very good. (although I can't figure out what the description listed by amazon.com has to do with the book. seems like it should be for another book)

sacred hoop
Many white explorer and all too many missionaries call Indians devil worshipers. The Holy Spirit tower became Devil's Tower. Holy Spirit Lake became Devil's Lake. The sacred hoop was assaulted. Some say it was broken.
In this book there is a restoration of the Sacred Hoop, as Black Elk foresaw. Native spirituality is celebrated.

Living in the Sacred Hoop -- A Connectedness to All
I recently led an e-mail retreat using "A Retreat With Black Elk" as our guide. It was refreshing in both content and spiritual benefits. The author led us to find our own path on The Good Red Road using the life, inspiration, dreams, example and words of the great holy man of the Oglala Sioux - Black Elk. This book not only deepened the faith of myself and my fellow seekers, but it also helped illuminate our connection and reverence with all life. Many thanks to the author for her honesty and purity of words/thought. This wonderful little book is perhaps the most important and sacred joy to have come my way in a long time.

Short, but profound
Gloria Hutchinson has written a book that capsulizes the ways in which six saints have prayer. She features Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola, Therese of Lisieux, Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross. She writes a brief biography of each and then describes their approach to prayer. Each section has questions for the reader to use as a meditation. The thoughtful reader might take quite a while getting through this little book. In fact, Hutchinson is able to make the styles of each of these saints very appealing and inviting, leaving the reader wanting to know more. This a good book for people who are starting to explore ways to pray. it is a book for those who have been doing this for a while and would like a short pick me up.

Practical and Prayerful
The last book published by Raymond E Brown prior to his death, it combines serious scholarship and prayerful reflection on the author of the Fourth gospel. The reader gets the feeling that Brown knew the "beloved disciple" on a personal basis. Many of the insights he shares about the community of the beloved disciple and the significance of the Fourth Gospel are profound and deeply moving. A book that is a real page turner.

A Retreat With Luke Review
The format of the book is concise and organized so that it can be utilized in days or in weeks. The authors perspective is usually interesting, at times quite creative. She elaborates more than the bible which encourages discussion. To be safe, she ends each section with thoughts to ponder. Could use questions after the sub-sections to initiate communication. Very strong female thematic content.

Get to know Dorothy and Oscar
Through this book, you will meet both Dorothy Day and Oscar Romero, two great figures in the history of the Catholic Church. The book is arranged in 7 days worth of readings - a week long retreat. Each day has an opening and a closing prayer, an excerpt from another work, an imagined conversation between Dorothy and Oscar, and suggestions for further reflection - all relating to the day's theme. Day One's theme, for example, is "Conversion" and Day Five's is "The Radical Gospel". The retreat ends with a bilbiography of other suggested readings that are intended to 'deepen your acquiantance' with these two powerful leaders in the struggle for justice and peace.
