Kjelgaard was an original.
I've read sf stories and many novels that lifted their plots from this book. Jean Auel and many others learned their fictional licks from FIRE HUNTER, an original concept when Kjelgaard placed it on paper, but now merely fodder for others to rip off.

Although a novel for children and young adults, it's well worth a read for adults, too.

A CHILDHOOD CLASSIC
I am a 40 year-old woman who owns this book & loves it! The copy that I have is actually the one I read as a child! I've kept it all these years because it is a fun, exciting read.

Fire-Hunter is a child/young adult story of Hawk, a member of a preshistoric tribe who breaks one of their rules, and is branded an outcast. Left behind with him is Willow, a young woman from the same tribe, who was cast out for an injury that was slowing down the tribe (they couldn't wait for her to get better, they had to move on to follow game).

The story is how Hawk (with Willow's help) invents bows & arrows, water-proof baskets, poison darts, learns how to domesticate dogs how to cure meat, and a few other major accomplishments. The author himself, in the book's preface, admits that it's highly unlikely that any ONE prehistoric person could have invented/discovered all of these things; it must have taken many generations to learn all that Hawk learns in this book!

Even as a child, it kind of irked me that Willow is the typical "woman behind the great man"; she helps in a sort of passive way. But this book is pretty dated. Women weren't known for doing much else besides cooking & having babies when this book was written. All that aside, I did and still do thoroughly enjoy this book because, even though it's abviosly written in a style that's accesible to young adults & children, it's still exciting!
Hawk battles the giant sloth, the great cave bear, and a tribe of less-advanced people who have it out for him & Willow. It moves along at an exciting pace that keeps even the most fidgety child entertained!

My copy is tattered & torn, but I wouldn't give it up for anything! If you can find a copy (at a less ridiculous price than what's being offered here), go for it!

Youthful Remembrance
I've read thousands of books for fun and on my way to a PhD, and the feeling I got from reading Fire-Hunter is still the standard by which I judge most fiction. I use the memory of this book to keep alive a passion and excitement for reading that I fear alot of older people have forgotten...wrapped in a blanket, oblivious to everything but the pages you can't stop turning. What a shame this book is so hard to find.

A must read for IT Managers!
As the MIS Director for a large educational institution, I have felt the impacts, first-hand, of recruiting and retaining top IT professionals in a tight job market. Yet there is clearly a methodical approach that can be followed to target the "right" employees and, once hired, ensure that they remain happy and content within your organization.

This book does an excellent job of outlining that process in a simple, easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach. The author not only covers all aspects of the hiring process but also reminds us of best practices that we too often (and too easily) forget to ensure success once we bring top players on board.

This book was pertinent and informative. I intend to pass it around to all of the managers on my staff.

An excellent guide for High Tech Executives and HR
Adamsky has produced a superb guide to the Hiring Process that is of great interest to Executives, Recruiters and Job seekers alike. The book is applicable to a wide range of industries well beyond the IT industry.

The book provides a great deal of actionable ideas that you can put into place now to improve your hiring practices, land the best candidates, and keep them as satisfied productive employees. Similarly, the book helps potential applicants better understand the hiring process and get inside the mind of hiring managers. It also contains a plethora of valuable and interesting ideas and commentary on the HR landscape. Truly an enjoyable and informative read !

A Pleasant Surprise!
I didn't actually buy this book but won it as a door prize at an industry trade show. I tossed it in my briefcase and didn't give it much thought to it until I was stuck in an airport on my return trip home. Although I don't hire a great number of "information technologists", the book was filled with excellent advice for any manager. His advice applies to the dynamics of locating, interviewing, hiring and retaining exceptional individuals. I like to underline when I read, and when I finished the book I realized I had underlined just about everything! Don't let the title throw you off because this is an excellent resource that truly cuts across all industries. He has his hand on the pulse of human nature, and an incredible insight into those people who understand how (technically) the world works.

I have already given a copy to a friend that owns a small company and has found it a challenge to find and retain good people. If my friend follows the program outlined in the book I am sure he will see the results. One thing I really liked about Adamsky's writing style is that it's light on philosophy and academic drivel and packed solid with the experiences of someone who has obviously been in the trenches.

Every Man's Boy Ought To Read This Book!
I first read Hie to the Hunters as a young boy. I still read it every other year or so. This is a young person's book with many adult lessons. Sparkie is a 16 year-old, tobacco chewin', fox huntin', overgrown teenager from the hills of Kentucky. He rescues Did Hargis from two bullies who are using him for a punching bag, and takes him home to the hills. Did is a soft city-slicker kid who is the resident poster boy of the local school. When Did first meets Sparkie's father "Peg" and mother "Arn" he is amused at their homey mannerisms and country ways. But Did soon learns that all knowledge is not found in books. He learns from his new family more than he had ever learned from his own father who operates the local hardware store. He even learns to sleep in the barn's hay loft with a hound dog or two for a blanket. Sparkie and Did coon hunt, fox hunt, and run a trap-line together. At first Did is all thumbs, but he soon learns the tricks of being a mountain-man and fits right in.

Meanwhile, a feud is brewing between the fox-hunters and the tobacco-growers. The tobacco-growers blame the fox-hunters for letting their hounds run through their tobacco and so they set out poison in the tobacco fields. In retaliation, tobacco barns start going up in flames one by one. Also, Did's dad isn't too happy about his leaving home to live among these "backward hillbillies" and gets the sheriff and town locals after Sparkie's folks. Did wants to stay, and the result is a cornfield fight between the mountain people and the city people. The mountain folk are at the annual corn-shuckin' when trouble breaks out. Did has just found a red ear (and thereby earned a kiss from his girl) when his dad and half the town come over the hill. Corn-stalks, fists, and insults are flying all around that night, but the issue still isn't settled.

There's much more to read about in this warm, moving, fictional account of two boys from different worlds learning how to be men together. The language in the book reminds one of the movie Sergeant York. If this all sounds interesting, believe me, this book is fun, action-packed, and moving. I recommend it to anyone who longs for simpler days and true family values. Hie to the Hunters is a classic.

Hie to the Hunters
I read this book as a teen and have never forgotten it! It is probably the best book I have ever read and I recommend it highly to readers of all types of books. They won't be disappointed. However, they may cry! I know I did.

undeniabley heart warming
this is one of the first books I read when I started reading adult fiction and even at 37 I enjoy reading this great human life like book

An excellent book, fun, factual and a refreshing style.
We picked this book up at a yard sale, and as you can see I'm on the net searching for more of William Boniface!!!. I loved the style in which the events are written. The ideas for the treasure hunters adventures were terrific and the information section towards the end, saved me a great deal of time and explanation!. My 4 year old loved the story. I believe this book stretches a childs mind and leads them down new paths of discovery.

Every turkey hunter needs this one
I haven't read Turkey it all the way through yet, but that's because it's so well-written I have to keep going back and re-reading chapters and passages just because they sound so good. The part I have read, though, is great, with lots of tips crammed into a very entertaining writing style.

If you like turkey hunting, or if you just like good outdoor writing, do yourself a favor and buy this one.

A Clever, Entertaining, Thoroughly Informative Guide
This is the funniest and most useful guide to hunting I've ever read. It treats everything from hunting grasshoppers in the backyard with BB guns to shooting Mountain Lions with a 264 Winchester Magnum, and is written in witty, self-deprecating style that makes reading it an adventure. There are sections on calling, handloading, varmint hunting associations, competition, tracking, camoflaging one's gun, shotguns, handguns, and of course, the various varmint rifle cartridges. It's a shame this book is out of print because it truly conveys the excitement and fascination of hunting, and no doubt could help draw more people into the sport, were it more widely available.

very impressive
I've had this book for a while now and from reading through both books, it far exceeds Hunter: The Reckoning. Just based on that, and the fact that I know Demon Hunter X is a very excllent sourcebook, I'd highly recommend it over Hunter: The Reckoning...this is just what my opinion and current course of action though. Do with it what you will...

World of Darkness going Anime?
Let me Just say WOW!!! First of all Demon Hunters are incredibly powerful. it has great describtions of the Shih and the Strike Force Zero(aka SF0). Both have intresting pasts and present about how they deal with the Shen>. And as an added bonus it has Great art work (even though a little graphic) but still "DA BOMB". Now if only they rest of the World of Darkness was Anime.....

a must
this is another must buy supplement for anyone wishing to play in the east. whether you play one of the shen or wish to play one of the hunters, demon hunter x adds a whole new dimension to gaming. when will white wolf get the hint and make KoE a division of its own.
