I have not only read this book over and over, but I recommend it to all my friends and they come away with the same teary, totally impressed reviews that I have given each and every one of them.

The book tells a wonderful story of a child who grows to womanhood in rural America. I loved Uncle Haskell and (as a child) thought Aunt Cordelia VERY unfair to "our Julia".

As an adult, I can't wait for my own children to read and sob over it as I did. As with all books I love, I alternatively wish that there was a sequel and thank God that there isn't.

A definitely MUST READ!

When I first saw this book I thought it was going to be just another boring book. Well, I was wrong. After the first few chapters, I thought this was the best book that I ever read. It was a book with alot af characters that I could relate to. It also had alot of morals witch will help me in the future. My favorite character is Aunt Cordelia because she was like another character that I saw in my favorite show ( Boy Meets World ) Mr. Finni. Like Mr. Finni, Aunt Cordelia taught Julie lessons without really telling her and I admire her for that. This book changed my way of thinking so I recomend this book to anyone of any age because the words are easy to read and it is easy to understand.

My name is Scat ( short for Michael Scatena ) I am a 7th grade student at Wyoming Area High School that doesn't really like to read. After I read this book, I love to read. Now every day after school instead of watching tv, I pick up a book and read. While we were reading this book, I would take home a packet, and read ahead. Anyway I love this book. My favorite character is Aunt Cordelia because like my other favorite character in my favorite tv show, Aunt Cordelia taught Julie lessons, without really telling her. This book changed my way of thinking about people that aren't as fortunate as me. I recommend this book to anyone above the 3rd grade because its easy to read and its very easy to understand.

As a school assignment, I had to read a book and write a report on it. As I looked through the fiction shelf in our school library, "The Lottery Rose" really stood out. A young, abused boy slowly learning how to love and be loved, all the while a sickly rosebush reflecting his hopes, dreams, and fears. What a great idea. I mean, what could be more touching? Unfortunately, Irene Hunt pretty much ruins the whole book. She does a terrible job with the characters and the plot, the two basic components in a story. She does a good job describing Robin, the retarded boy, but that's about it. The characters are about as unrealistic as possible. The adults are either completely perfect or completely cruel, and the 7- and 8-year-old children are one-sided and talk and act like they were about twice their age. Also, the plot is unrealistic. In a period of a year or so, Georgie goes from being scared and abused to being like a normal kid his age. Irene Hunt, being a psychologist, should know better than anyone how long the healing process takes for an abused child. As a whole, this book is pretty bad. I strongly do not recommend reading this book, no matter how tempting the back cover sounds.

The book the Lottery Rose, written by Irene Hunt is a deeply touching and gripping story about a 7 year old boy named Georgie who is abused by his mother Rennie and her boyfriend, Steve. One day, when his mother is drunk and gives Georgie money to buy food at the grocery store,he uses the change to buy a lottery ticket. On the day of the lottery, he discovers that his prize is a rosebush. Georgie loves his rosebush. One night, after being abused, it is decided that Georgie will be sent to an all boy's school run by nuns in Tampa, Florida. There, he meets Sister Mary Angela who gives Georgie the opportunity to plant his bush almost anywhere he pleases. But where will he decide to plant his rosebush and will he be happy at his new school? The Lottery Rose is an emotional and realistic stroy of human struggle and injustice affecting the life of a young boy who has been victimized in his childhood. Georgies's innocent personality quickly captured my sympathy and pressed me to closely follow the events which unfold in this gripping story. The situations in which Georgie found himself seemed true to life and easily touched my sense of curiousity. Questions such as "Will Georgie find loving adults that will take good care of him?" "Will he be given a fair opportunity to develop his personal interests?" " Is Georgie destined to a life of misery or happines?" beckoned to be answered and motivated me to read the stroy to its conclusion.

This book is very sad but at times very heart-warming. It brought tears to my eyes. I'm going to order it and read it over. I read it in fifth grade when I was eleven, and I had one of the best book experiences that I ever had. This book is: sad, emotional, happy at times, and very interesting. The ending though was so confusing. How Georgie gave something up that was so precious to him. I won't give the book away, because that's not fun. This book has some abuse in it, but that really makes you look at life better. I've read reviews that said that there is too much abuse, and it just isn't a big deal. I think that books that make you cry, and touch you so deaply, can make you look at life better. This book is so wonderful that it feels as if it's real life, well this story could happen, really. Read this book, it is so great. I don't know how anyone can hate it, it's just not possinle. three *... stars is as low as it can go. I really want to buy this book again, and read it over and over. I never get tired of it, and I'm sure you won't either. Very Good book. Unlike any other. If you don't read it, you'll feel so bad, because it's so good. Just put a bucket in front of you incase you cry, and three boxes of tissues next to you. I cried because of the sad parts in it, I cried because it ended. Such a sad story. And if there are any parents reading this right now, well you don't have to worry about a thing. This book is great for kids. (It may even get them to behave better! I bet you'll love that) It really made me behave better. This book really moved me, and I'm sure it will move you completely. But don't forget the tissues and the buckets, You'll need it later trust me.

I didn't really understand the book. I think that Irene Hunt should make more books. I think you should read it if she has a baby boy or girl. If you like realistic fiction books you should read, "A Road Up Slowly."

I think Up a Road Slowly by Irene Hunt was a realistic aproach to explain the troubles and good times a childhood could be and often is. I enjoyed the book very much and felt like I was related to Julie or was her friend. Thats how well written the book was it made you feel like you were there experiencing those things with her. The variety of characters and personalities of each was even better. I think it was fun to read and although I as a person am not always fond of taking time to read, when i did read this it was very much worth it! Sincerly, Danielle

I thought this book was 1 of the best books I have ever read, besides harry potter this and the lottery rose also by irene hunt were totally awesome books i would have liked them more though if not as many people died but i think it makes it more interesting that people die in it i mean the way they die are interesting im 13 years old and reading this book taught me lessons about life so i wont make some of the same mistakes the characters in the book did thats what i think of up a road slowly

Across Five Aprils, by Irene Hunt is historical fiction. In 1861, Jethro Creighton is a nine year-old boy at the start of the American Revolution. This book tells how his family is affected throughout the war. His mother had twelve kids, but three of them died the year Jethro was born, the oldest daughter was murdered by a man in their town, and the oldest son went to California looking for gold. They haven't seen him since. This book, Across Five Aprils, goes through five years. In the beginning, all of Jethro's brothers and friends are drafted in the war. The war causes Jethro's family many hardships. First, his favorite brother, Bill, joins the war with the south, and not the north. Many towns people call Jethro's family "Copperheads" which means traitors. They think the Creightons are spies for the south. Gangs come to their house in the middle of the night and burn down their barn. Second, Jethro's father, Matt Creighton, has a heart attack, and becomes too weak to work the farm anymore. Time passes, and Jethro's family gets the news that Tom is dead. Eb, the Creightons' cousin who has lived with them for years, becomes a deserter. Jethro writes a letter to Abraham Lincoln asking him what to do about Eb. I like this book because i think it is very interesting. It gives a very accurate idea of what could happen to an average family during the American Revolution. I mostly liked the love story. Jenny Creighton, Jethro's 14 year-old sister, and Shad, Jethro's friend, are in love, and want to marry before the war, but Matt Creighton thinks Jenny is too young. When Shad becomes hurt, the family lets Jenny go to him and they get married. I don't like how sad this book is. Everyone in his family is dying or gone. Jenny, Jethro's sister, is my favorite characterb because I can relate to her. We are about the same age, and have many of the same problems. The scene when John and Bill see eachother for the first time in the war means something to me because it was very surprising. Most books are predictable, but this book was very surprising. This book is different from other books I have read because it is a historical fiction and I still think it is interesting. Usually these kind of books are boring, but this book kept my attention. I would recommend this book to other people. I tell them how interesting and exciting it is. After reading this book i have a few questions such as: What happened to John and Bill? Did they ever make it home? Does everyone in town hate Bill? Will anything happen to Eb when he returns to the war? The strongest reason I recommend this book is because it kept my attention. I would recommend this book to people of all ages.

The book No Promises in the Wind by Irene hunt was about a young boy's struggle to survive during the depression in the U.S. It takes place during the winter of 1932. Josh is the main character in the book. He and his father Stefan always get into arguments because his father has no job and can't provide for his family, so his father takes his frustration out on his on Josh, his oldest son. This causes Josh to leave home and embark on his adventure. His mother Mary is the one that gives Josh the OK to leave home. She feels bad for doing this, but she only sees the situation getting worse. So, Howie and Josh decide to run away together and make a life for themselves. Howie is Josh's best friend. Just before they leave, Josh's little brother wants come along. His name is Joey. Joey is ten years old and looks like an angel. There many problems that the main characters encounter during the book, the first one happens when the brothers lose their friend. Howie is run over by a train in the beginning of the book. After this, the main problem is to get money and food. Different people help Josh and Joey get food. One day while walking, they meet a truck driver named Lonnie. Lonnie is very helpful; he gives the boys meals and a long ride down south to warmer weather. He also helps Josh find a job at a carnival. At the carnival Josh and Joey meet Emily. She is an older lady. She is very kind to the boys. Josh falls in love with her, but it does not work out because of the age differences. The carnival burns down so the boys head back north to find their friend Lonnie. Along the way they have to beg to survive.
The one character that I could relate to was Josh. Because I have had similar conflicts with my father. Like Josh's father, my dad was going through hard times and most of the time took out his frustration on me. At times I wanted to leave, but I did not. My father and I worked out our problems like Josh and his father did.
I really enjoyed this book. It keeps the reader entertained the whole time. You always want to find out what is going to happen to the boys all the way to the end. My favorite part is when the boys are at the carnival. The author does a good job of describing the people and events that happen during their stay at the carnival. My least favorite part was when the man at the shoe store took the boy's money. Personally I would not change anything to this book. I think it was written well, and it gets its point across.
I would recommend this book to any one who is interested in how life was during the 1930s. Also anyone that grew up during that time period might enjoy it. This book is a fun read that keeps you entertained the whole time.

This is a great novel to use as supplemental reading material while teaching about the Great Depression in a seventh or eighth grade classroom. Students will really get an understanding of the devistation the Depression had on people of all ages as they read of the experience these two young boys encountered. Hunt's portrayal of the characters makes the reader feel as if he/she really knows the boys. The reader will begin to feel the characters diappointments and joys as they travel across the United States searching for work. Trust, forgiveness, family, and perseverance are themes that occur throughout the book. These, and the many other themes which occur throughout the book can provide a great basis for discussion in the classroom. This is a book that both boys and girls will enjoy.

The book that I read was No Promises in the Wind written by Irene Hunt. Liked the book because it was an adventure book. I know that many people like to read adventure books and if you didn't read this book yet you should. Now I know why they made the expression,"Don't judge a book by it's cover" because the cover of the book makes it look pretty bad but the book was actually pretty good. I think everybody that has read this book they would agree with me this is a tariffic book.
I love the quote "You want me to go with you Josh" said by Joey Joshes younger brother because it shows that Joey cares alot about his older brother(page 7). I this the theme of this book is if you have a problem fix it and I agree with it you shouldn't just lie back and pretend like it's not happening because after a while it's to late. This book this story doesnt really relate to my life because this story took place during the Great Depression and everyone was poor and I'm not about to run away from home.
I will recommend this book to others in fact I have already recommended this book to a couple of my friends that live in Colorado and in Florida. The reason I choose this book to read for this project is because I when to the libary and iremembered my friend recommeded it to me and he said alot of good things about it. Its kind of weird because he said it was pretty hard to read but to me it was relitivly easy I mean I finish it in four days cause I really got into it.

Across Five Aprils is a book that is set during the Civil War. It is about a 9-year-old boy named Jethro who lives on a farm in Illinois, and it chronicles his experiences across the five aprils that the war goes through.
I particularly enjoyed this book, because most books about boys set during the Civil War are about how the boys go off to fight. This book is different, because Jeth does not join the army. Instead, he stays at home and helps his family with the crops. I thought that this was a most refreshing change.
I learned many new things from this book. From my history books I had always gotten the impression that Lincoln was a grand hero. We know now that he was, but at the time, many people didn't think so. They criticized him and blamed him for all their problems when the war went wrong. In truth, when the Union army lost battles, it was because the Generals in charge ignored Lincoln's orders and did something different instead.
I would recommend this book to people ages 10 and up. I would not recommend it for younger children, because some of the things described in the book are a bit scary. It is, after all, about a war.

Across Five Aprils is a very good, easy to read book. If you want a feel for what some familes went through during the Civil War, then you should read this book. If you only want dates and battle descriptions, this is not the book for you. Across Five Aprils gives you a perspective of the Civil War through the eyes of a nine year old boy. One who had to grow up quick and watch his family torn apart. These things really did happen and I couldn't stop thinking about my nephew, and how I'm glad he isn't having to face the same type of problems that Jethro had to face. This book should really be on school reading lists.

This book is a compilation of various tales we all heard growing up. It is a great book for bedtime reading. My two sons enjoy picking out which stories to read, and then listening intently. The stories are fun to read, and the boys have committed many of the "key" parts of each story to memory.
