A definitive analysis of changes in North Carolina
This is the most comprehensive and informative state atlas I have ever reviewed. Excellent maps, great charts and clearly written text makes "The North Carolina Atlas" a book that needs to be on the shelf of every public library and in the hands of all North Carolina devotes. Over the last century North Carolina has transformed itself from a struggling southern state to one of the fastest growing economies in the U.S. "The North Carolina Atlas" provides a definitive analysis of the changes that have created this wonderful state.

History, population, urbanization, and economy are transforming forces that molded North Carolina into what it is today. Each of these sections are clearly laid out so that the reader can make a critical analysis of the change and form an assessment of the coming changes that the future may bring.

Especially interesting are the sections that deal with quality of life in North Carolina. Crime, education, health care, water and air quality, cultural arts and outdoor recreation are profiled and supported by scores of maps, charts and diagrams. This is a book I would especially want in my possession if I was considering moving my family and business to this State. Highly Recommended.

More Than Just Maps
As Governor Jim Hunt says in the forward, "North Carolina is at a crossroads in its history." This "atlas" provides not only a wealth of information, but an intelligent perspective on the future of the state as it enters the 21st century.

Subjects matter includes the natural environment, history, population, urbanization, economy, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, trade, politics, air quality, water resources, crime, health, education, arts, and recreation. I found these topics to be presented in an effective manner and certainly more enlightening than the statistical record one might imagine.

I also discovered, before I placed my order, that I was able to preview some of the book's illustrations at the UNC Charlotte Cartography Lab web site.

I would recommend this text not only to students, researchers and teachers, but anyone interested in a comprehensive and knowledgeable summary of the diverse state of North Carolina.

The Untold Story of Douglas MacArthur
I was shocked to find out just how much the Communists were involved with WWII in the US, and even more so in the Korean War. The loss of China to the Communists after WWII was also documented.

The McCarthy hearings came much too late!!

This book made me re-think some strong opinons on FDR and others that I had previously held.

A Beautiful Story
Our family was given this book as an early Christmas gift this year and we all love the simple yet heart-warming story. It tells the tale of how snowflakes were named. God creates the snow as a gift for a young angel named Kalen to name. It's a book for adults as well as childern. Our 2 year old enjoys it!

Creatures 2, Story 1
Mysterious flying creatures attack and disembowel a young woman and later attack a weather station and its crew. The FBI is sent to the little town of Crystal Wells to investigate, but some members have their own agenda. Local resident and snow tractor driver, Morgan Blaylock, stumbles upon the truth and must battle both the creatures and rogue agent, Richard Case. Case wants to cover up the killings and capture the creatures for his own profit.

I gave the book an extra star for the concept of the creatures. They are unique AND bloodthirsty! It would have been a great monster story, but the plot holes and foibles just got bigger and more distracting as the story progressed. But there is a lot of good action and it's a fast moving story.

Fun creature feature.
As a horror fan, I couldn't resist a novel called THE DEVOURING. Not when the cover has menacing yellow eyes staring through an old door and a blurb that says "What you can't see can kill you!" I mean hey, that's the recipe for pure fun to a horror geek like me. And as cheesy as all that sounds, I'm happy to say it was actually pretty entertaining in a late-night creature-feature kind of way... People are being mutilated and abducted in a small Colorado town. Some creature seems to be stalking the snowy mountains and swooping out of the night sky to snatch it's victims. Federal agents are on the case, along with a few locals, and things go from bad to worse as they find that there is more than one creature and humans aren't at the top of the food chain anymore. (The locals also find that the feds are almost as unpleasant as the bloodthirsty critters.)... Douglas Hawk has cranked out a fun creature feature with THE DEVOURING. If you enjoy fast moving horror-action with a strong B-movie flavor to it, check this one out.

Don't let the packageing fool you....
This novel appears to be one of those cheap, formulatic horror novels that are a "dime a dozen," but, as I discovered, it was anything but. The basic story itself is a little familiar, being: man against an evil, centuries old species that comes out of hiding for survival purposes, but, the author tells this somewhat familiar tale in such an exceptional and very intelligent manner, that the reader will forgive any feelings of deja vu. Douglas D. Hawk is an obviously intelligent man whom appears to have done his homework concerning his chosen craft. His characters are well developed, his settings are well crafted, and he has a great sense of humor that never sinks to silliness. This novel moved at a brisk pace throughout, keeping the reader's full attention. An avid reader can see the outcome a mile away, but, once again, the author does an admiral job of putting a "freshness" to an often told tale, thus, the ending remains pleasant and satisfying. I would recommend this novel to all horror lovers in general.

Life is too short to waste it on a book like this.
I simply did not understand the story. I had to force myself to continue to read and when I was finally finished - I could hardly believe it. I felt cheated and betrayed. I could hardly understand what had happened and could not figure out the ending. Was the mystery solved? Who was the killer? I could only guess. So I visited this site to read other people's review and was stunned to find to find that the average rate was 5 stars! They must be loyal to the author or be crazy about anything that has to do with cats. Or I must be from Mars. I love books and I love mysteries - but this is the worst mystery I have ever read. Perhaps the author should consider another genre of writing. I feel bad giving a bad review but want to warn others not to read this book.

Everything but the kitchen sink
I've read all books in the series (which I'm normally fond of), but this one was just a little too overloaded with characters, plots, and angst. I didn't really care about the too out-there Shangri-la villianess or her cat, and I was annoyed with the heroine Temple (who actually seemed to be more in the background). I think Ms. Douglas does a much better job juggling a complicated storyline in the next book, Cat in an Indigo Mood.

One of the best series ever!
I've read all of the first nine books, except for the first and they are absolutley incredible!. I just ordered the first one and I'm getting ready to order the tenth one INDIGO MOOD. The books are fast paced and very exciting, I read 8 of the books in just two weeks, I couldn't put them down! Cat on a Hycanith Hunt was one of my favorites in the series. If you're looking for a good read, these are definitly it!

Not credible
This is just a little weird. Some of what Hunt says is reputable and makes sense. It's nice that he combines talking about psychological aspects of (and treatments for) anxiety with talking about drug- and food-related aspects of (and treatments for) anxiety. But he doesn't exactly interweave them well. A section about how to use behavioral techniques to conquer shyness is followed, with no segue, by a list of vitamins and gimmicky-sounding preparations to ingest. It's not always clear whether one is supposed to do the nutritional treatment first, the behavioral treatment first, or both. Since the nutritional treatment is often supposed to completely cure the anxiety, why are the behavioral treatments here?

Hunt's approach is just too glib, and quite vague. There's almost nothing here about WHY or HOW various vitamins and other "supplements" fix one's anxiety. Just take 'em because he says so. I'd like a little more discussion of why I should trust this.

Mainly, I'm unnerved by his failure to explain how he arrived at each particular combination of supplements for each particular disorder. He does spend a little time discussing individual nutrients (calcium, biotin, etc.) and what they seem to do in the body.

Hunt excoriates modern anti-anxiety drugs except for short-term use because they can cause side effects and be addictive. So vitamins and herbs and whatnot never have side effects? Not to mention that Hunt does not address the possible effects of taking all these things in combination (typically he prescribes seven or eight different pills or powders for a given ailment).

WHY is the list of supplements for Fear of the Dentist different from the one for Social Anxiety, which is yet different from the one for Stage Fright, and so on? Maybe there are good reasons, but why aren't they explained here? The lack of explanation makes me suspicious.

I understand there is probably research indicating that, say, biotin might help with anxiety in some regard (I'm not sure how direct the evidence is). Hunt provides an impressive list of references in the back, of journal articles about these supplements. But he doesn't convince me that anyone has shown that this particular combination of supplements is good for this particular type of fear. I don't believe it has been shown.

You'd be far better off to read the original research articles yourself and form your own conclusions.
