Rugby--A short, duplicitous book
Line up all of you Will Wimbles. Hughes wants save you from the new "hell" of late Victorian England. He wants to give you the chance to finally work with your hands without being stigmatized as a common labourer. He'll tell you out of one side of his mouth that you'll have to work hard, but out of the other side of his mouth, he'll tell you that Tennessee living is easy. Don't think that he's trying to pull a fast one on you, though. These are his true impressions. You can trust few literary character as much as you can Thomas Hughes. That's probably why no one reads him....

True summary from a resident of Rugby, Tennessee
This review is written by a resident-expert on Rugby, Tennessee. My family has been connected to that town since 1939. I have read the book in question, and without a doubt it is a necessary book for anyone wanting to know Hughes's true intent for the establishment of Rugby in 1880. Its purpose was to inspire young men from England to come to what was then a rather remote region of East Tennessee, to work the land and make good for themselves. I would not recommend it for the casual visitor or tourist who comes to Rugby (several thousand per year)but only for those who have a strong attachment to the Rugby community, or to those who may be studying Thomas Hughes's life. He was an extraordinary character. He was a member of Parliament, Queen's Counsel, lawyer, judge, promoter of a movement known as Christian Socialism in the mid 1800s. This book would be of great value to someone doing detailed research on Hughes and his life. End.

The Finite Element Method: Linear Static and Dynamic Finite Element Analysis
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (February, 1987)

Rigorous mathematically, but this is not always desirable.
I've studied finite elements in various formulations, and my
opinion would be that this is not an appropriate text for someone
working in the real world of civil engineering, say, or heat
distribution problems. I think it is too abstract for general readers. It reminds me of one of my profs who advised us to stay away from mathematicians because the mathematician will teach you rigor and rigor mortis. Still, it is a good book to have in your library just in case you need it, and it is available at a very reasonable price.

Definitely five stars!
The author hase chosen the best, in my oppinion, way to present the background maths using functionals, this not being the fact with other, indeed classic and valuabe, though much more expensive, texts on the subject. Actually most use the original forms of variatonal formulations, which are tricky and result in very lengthy equations. Regarding the method itself, this text includes almost everything you should know to solve linear problems, both static and dynamic (i especially appreciated the dynamic part). Price over value ratio tends to zero, so it is a real bargain!

Great Buy, good value for your $$$
An excellent reference book from one of the gurus of FEM. It's more mathematically oriented than most, but it gives you a good insight into the math , which is the foundation of all FEM.
Great bargain for the price.

Turning simple problem into nightmare.
Turning simple problem into nightmare. How difficult can an elasticity problem be in engineering? But these guys just have a way to make 1+1=2 looks like the most mysterious problem mankind has ever come across. No wonder everyone hates engineering and physics nowadays.

An advanced level book heavy on mathematics
Though I'm a engineer in practice I bought this book out of personal interest to further my knowlegde. When I first opened the book I was a taken aback by the amount of mathematics used. Having a good knowledge of the classical theory of elasticity and some non-linear theory is simply not enough to begin with this book. Know your mathemactics! (differential geometry, etc.) Appart form the starting difficulies the book has very much to offer and is well written. I especially liked the "exotic" topics like relativistic elasticity and bifurcation theory of beams and plates. This book is very different compared to the books I used to read on elasticity but I still enjoy it.

5 stars, but only for advanced level
Sb. said this book turns 1+1=2 into a nightmare, however I can't agree.
First, this book is not written for engineers. For engineers, there are a dozen of good elasticity books, eg. the classics Fung's "Foundation of solid mechanics". This is not the right book for engineers.
This book deals elasticity within the context of manifold. For these of you who really want to know what a tensor really is, what the real meaning of these 1+1=2, for example C=F'F, in the general settings, this is the right one.
As it is said, knowing elasticity, finite deformation theory, nonelasticity is still not enough to open this book. All you need to know is a lot of differential geometry and tensor calculus. This book also try to build up these notions. Good concurrent books to help you understand are "tensor calculus on manifold" by Bishop et. al, and "the geometry of physics" by Frankel.
Overall, this is a book very hard to penetrate, and only intended for the advanced level. You won't expect to learn any elasticity from this book if you are new to elasticity. I recommend you to return back to this classic when you think you are ready, you will find a whole new world.

Dictionary of Islam

Author: Thomas Patrick Hughes

Average review score:

Comprehensive Survey of the Islamic Faith
I have reviewed Thomas Hughes' Dictionary of Islam, and I have found that, despite being written by an Englishman clergyman over 100 years ago, it presents a fairly comprehensive view of the Islamic faith, based essentially on the orthodoxy of the Hanifite (madhab)-- School of Islam Law.

Most of the scriptural information contained therein come from traditional Islamic texts (such as Mishkat al Masabih, Hidaya, etc.), but several biographical sketches and translations of the Qur'anic Surahs are based on the works of Western orientalists, containing inherent biases. By and large, the traditions and rules are universal and not subject to polemics.

The lexicon undoubtedly contain vast amount of information that can only be found in other voluminous texts and encyclopedias, such as the New Encyclopedia of Islam, still under production.

This dictionary will be of great value to the lay Muslim (wanting to know more about Islam) as well as the serious student of the faith. It contains far more historic information than the Concise Encylopedia of Islam by Cyril Glass, even though I put the latter a step ahead because it prepared by a man of the faith and it is more up to date.

Nonetheless, this book would be a good addition to anyone's library. I use it all the time for quick references, especially on 'far out' topics or questions including those that may be considered 'esoteric.'

I have no hesitation in recommending this book, if only because there is no other out there (produced from Muslim sources) that is available in a comprehensive format to the lay Muslim, outside that of Cyril Glass'.

A concise encyclopedia of Islamic beliefs and practices
This book, written by a Christian Missionary wandering in the Indian Sub-continent in the 1800's is a very copmprehensive work on the Islamic doctrines, beliefs and practices. It practically has a definition for every Islamic term or concept that you ever wanted to know. Apart from these it also contains informative articles on the lifestyles of Muslims in the 1800's on ceremonies like marriage, birth, death and other festivals and rites. Its many illustrations and easy to read format will prove invaluable to any one who wants to learn about Islam and Muslims and will be a great gift for non-muslim friends.

Elmer Sperry: Inventor and Engineer

History of one of the all time "Great American Inventors"
This is the story of Elmer Sperry, inventor and engineer, who created the company which eventually included such famous names as Sperry Gyroscope, Sperry New Holland, Sperry Vickers, Sperry Marine, Remington and Sperry Rand and the technologically advanced makers of the first commercial computer, Sperry Univac.

For students interested in the historical backgrounds of some of the most influential hi tech companies of the 50s to the late 80's then this book is almost required reading.

Elmer Sperry was a quiet, understated and insightful genius and inventor whose influence has been felt by all who passed through the Univac school with their eyes wide open.

A Bad Math Book
... The layout of the book was confusing and so where theexamples and explanations. If it where not for a great math teacher Iwould have been lost in the class if I was just left to the book alone. I would recommend students and teachers (if your considering this book for your class) to stay away from it... END

excellent, much faster than I expected
Excellent seller. It arrived much faster than I expected.
Thanks a lot

Teach yourself Calculus
This book is addressed for understanding of the Calculus and not for the traditional teaching that sins for the excess of formalism. It is an excellent book for who wants to understand and to learn Calculus through the application of problems of the Real World. The book also motivates the use of graphic calculators to have a better vision of the problem.

OK overview, but hideously bug ridden
and clearly a cut-and-paste rush conversion job from the NW 5.1 book.

There are dangerous omissions and advice here. Do not purchase this book unless you already know NW 6 and just need a quick reminder occasionally (and thus can recognize likely errors)

Horribly innacurate
I am a current Master CNE and have been a CNE for many versions of Netware (also an MCSE, CCNA, CCDA, CCSA). The book is filled with wrong information and problems. I'm not being overly critical, I'm talking basic information that's just plain wrong. It was right for NetWare 5, but not NetWare 6. In fact in several places, the book accidently says NetWare 5 when it means NetWare 6 - I think they were cutting and pasting from the NetWare 5 book. I virtually always buy the Novell Press books and this is the first time I have ever been this disappointed. The information that is correct is frequently woefully light on content. It's amazing how little of value a 1500 page book can actually say.

Lots of errors, but it is heavy
I purchased this book hoping to find a definitive reference on NetWare 6. I mean, who else would publish such a book but Novell Press themselves.

Unfortunately, within the first 50 pages of this book there are at least 10 errors on items such as what is included with the OS, minimum requirements for RAM and DOS partitions, what is included with the Express Install and what some of the features like NSS support. There were also numerous references in the text to NetWare 5 or 5.1, which makes me think that much of the text was cut and pasted from previous versions of the book. There are also some glaring omissions like no mention whatsoever of the new auditing tools.

Considering that the book was published about 5 months after the release of the OS, I was extremely disappointed in its accuracy. I'll be looking to return my copy and find something else that does a better job. I recognize that someone put a tremendous amount of work into this book, but someone should have done a better job at checking it for technical accuracy.

A "Publish-it-quick" Survey of Netware 5
Probably not edited by anyone speaking English (at least, nobody that knows ANYTHING about networks). Extremely wordy, repetitive, regularly travels half-way around the world to get across the street. Exhaustive in its treatment of trivial details (like how to expand an NDS container) while lightly skipping over complex subject matter (like partitioning). The only good thing I could say about this book is the design and outline of its contents and the effort exerted in filling in the details seem to be well matched, both of them quite low. Would not recommend this book for anyone unless they are an incurable insomniac -- this is the cure. I wrote to IDG to express my dissatisfaction with this book and my disappointment with them for pandering it to the public.

Novell's Guide to NetWare 5 Networks
I was looking for a complete guide to NetWare 5 for a new network operating system user. This is not it. The was written by experts for experts.

Excellent Book
I had the chance to meet the authors at Brainshare 99, they were kind enough to autograph the book. In various installations this book has helped alot!! Especially with the new backup system Novell has implemented with Netware 5. Easy reading, not overly technical..

This is a lousy book- don't buy it!
This book is not about NDS for NT ( well 2 chapters do, about 50 pages nothing you won't find on Novell's site in PDF format. The first 300 pages treat NDS implementation and design. I guess if you're about to implement NDS for NT, you've probably passed Advanced Admin.

COVERS THE FIVE ESSENTIALS
GREAT FOR INSTALLING AND DESIGNING NDS.NOT AS DIFFICULT AS I THOUGHT GUESS BOOK MADE IT EASY...
