An eneresting, exciting book, of Diana Ross.
I loved the book and all the facts about Diana Ross? It showed me that if you are coming from a not so wealthy background, and you can still make something out of your life when you are odler.

A great book about the best DIVA ever!
There was a time that J. Randy was a freind of the diva Miss Ross. I guess he was her Linda Tripp! Since she did find out that he was writing a book about her, without telling her, I think confidences shared would be expected to be kept silent. After all, he was the president of the Supremes fan club, and had access to Diana, THE GIRLS, and the people at Motown.I think a more balanced account of her life and the MYTHS surrounding her is to be found in a chapter of a new book called "DIVAS". Anyone interested in anather slant on The Supremes and Diana should read "ALL THAT GLITTERS". Iam a big fan-I try to be objective, but Diana has gotten a bad rap, especially since 1985. Get the "DIVAS" book for a really more balanced viewpoint of the star and the myths surrounding her life. The music still stands!

Very enjoyable and it kept my attention
I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in Diana Ross. It was very informational and inspirational. Great Book!!!

very good
This book will be of especial help to young readers. I do, however have one quibble, and that is that the great writer Alice Walker has challenged white male prejudice so effectively that it is regrettable that there is not more discussion of this in the text. As a white radical feminist who sides with African-American women in their struggle against oppression, I am grateful that books like this are written.

Informative and fascinating
The books I have read in this series, Black Americans of Achievement, have all been terrific. They are clearly written and easy for children to understand. They have marvelous black and white illustrations and photographs throughout. Each illustration and photograph has a caption that gives the reader more information about places, people, and events related to the subject of the biography.

The length of the books is just right. These books are long enough to cover the important events in the subject's life and to meet the requirements that teachers often give for book reports (a book longer than 50 pages. Yet they are short enough that they don't intimidate elementary school children. (This biography of Paul Laurence Dunbar has 110 pages.)

These books are well organized and informative. In the back are an appendix, a chronology of the person's life, a bibliography, and an index.

The biography of Paul Laurence Dunbar was fascinating. I am curious to know more about this poet, especially his religious beliefs. Also, I would like to read more of his writings. He had many obstacles to overcome, such as being poor and black at a time when racism was rampant. (He lived from 1872 to 1906.) Yet he worked hard, took risks, and persevered until he achieved his dream of being a successful poet and author. He was a very talented poet who inspired other black poets such as Langston Hughes. However, the latter years of his life were sad and tragic as he became chronically ill and developed an alcohol problem. Details about his alcohol problems were omitted, as is appropriate in a book written for elementary children. I am now interested in reading an adult biography and am curious to know if he turned to God for comfort in his despair.

AN O.K. BOOK
This book wasn't very good, but it wasn't horrible. It could have been MUCH better and it is much better than some of the other Black American Series.

Slave and Citizen: The Life of Frederick Douglas
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Co (Juv Trd) (1980)
Author: Nathan Irvin Huggins
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $12.95

A slow-moving book, full of repetative information.
I did not at all enjoy "Slave and Citizen." Nathan Irvin Huggins' writing dragged, and information seemed to be frequently repeated. I was disappointed that the vast majority of the book was political in nature. Douglass' personal life was focused upon very little. His time spent as a slave and in childhood was touched upon only very lightly. Likewise, his marriages and children were only briefly mentioned. The rest of the book, which could have been adequately summarized in just a few pages, drug on and on. I was disappointed, and will be searching for a more personal biography of Douglass to read.
