Balances centuries of tradition and faith with modern change
The World Of Christ And the World Of Culture: Sacred And Secular Through The Theology Of Karl Barth by Paul Louis Metzger (Assistant Professor of Christian Theology and Theology of Culture, Multnomah Biblical Seminary, Portland, Oregon) is a close and illuminating study of Karl Barth's revolutionary theological ideals. From exploring the sacred in the creative word to "theological politics" to the demise of corpus christianum, The World of Christ and the World of Culture balances centuries of tradition and faith with modern changes in human way of life looking for a road that unifies faith in God with adaptations to the onward march of Time. The World Of Christ And The World Of Culture is a most welcome addition to Christian Theological Studies reading lists and library collections.

Towards a Theology of Culture
Amazing! This book shows how Orthodox Christology can provide a framework for engagement of the sacred and secular spheres which is both constructive and critical. Metzger shows how Barth's understanding of the relation of Christ's divine and human natures establishes the basis for a theology of culture.

Barth's paradigm, it is argued, provides a framework in which culture is allowed to truly be itself as secular, in distinct though inseparable relation to Christ. In Barth's day, his paradigm spoke against both the divinization of culture witnessed in Nazi Germany, and the secularization of culture in Soviet socialism, yet remained constructive calling for the humanization of culture to be truly secular in its proper sphere. Barth's appreciation of Mozart is shown not to be an anomaly in his theology as a whole, but rather the product of his Christological paradigm.

Today, the implications of this paradigm loom large for what Gunton refers to in the foreword as the often "distorted religious culture" of America and the West attempting to come to terms with Islam and the global world. I myself have often wrestled with the schizophrenic waffling between divinization and secularization of culture so evident here in America. This book has helped me set a framework in which Christology speaks both critically and constructively to both church and culture.

Metzger shows how Barth's paradigm establishes the framework for a theology of culture crucially relevant to our modern day, in which Christology calls culture to truly be itself. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to see Christology taken 'off the shelf' and into the world-at-large.

Althusser and the Renewal of Marxist Social Theory
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (June, 1992)
Author: Robert Paul Resch
Amazon base price: $50.00
Used price: $34.50
Average review score:

Excellent Overview
Despite being quite a hefty tome, this is one of the best social theory books I've read in a long time. Lack of time prevents me from a quick discussion of the main themes of the book but if you're after a study that clearly sets out the ideas of Althusser and his followers, while critically defending them against postmodern and 'Marxist' polemics, and making the case for Althusser's continued relevance to revolutionary working class politics then this book is for you.

Greenberg's Guide to Marx Instruction Sheets
Published in Hardcover by Greenberg Pub (February, 1992)
Authors: Paul Gailey and Walter Check
Amazon base price: $49.95
Used price: $25.50

A invaluable source for Marx Instruction Sheets
Each Marx/Allstate/Montgomery Ward/Grants/Western Auto/Walgreens train set made by the Louis Marx company came with a number of instruction sheets. At the least, there was the basic sheet showing how to connect the transformer to the track and how to put the track together. It included a synopsis of how to lubricate the locomotive.

If your set had any type of accessories, these were covered by additional "IS-#" sheets (where # is the sheet #). A deluxe set sold at any of the listed stores might have a instruction sheet for the track/engine/transformer, plus the sheet for each accessory.

If you need replacement IS sheets, this is the book for you!

Great Read!
When I first heard about Lou's latest book, Losing That Lovin' Feeling, I felt I had no need to read it. Twenty-two years after my divorce, I felt that I was an "all right" person with some pretty good coping skills. Whoa!! Was I ever wrong!
Using Biblical principles, Lou explores a plethora of feelings that encompass our past, our present and our FUTURE as singles. Reading this book is enabling me to deal in a God-honoring way with these feelings.
This book is a great read--one you'll want to keep and recommend to others. Get your highlighter out and be ready to use it as you read!

Packed with drawings and color examples
Any college-level arts library collection including classes or studies in stained glass will want to include this specialty history, which examines the collaboration between draftsmen and glass painters in southern Germany and Switzerland from 1480 to 1530. While Albrecht Durer is the focus here, others are examined for their contributions to the stained glass field and Painting on Light is packed with drawings and color examples of their works in a unique, appealing presentation.

Careful and thorough introduction to Klee
This is an efficient and careful monograph that succeeds on many levels. Grohmann was Klee's biographer and longtime friend. He is respectful without being sycophantic, and thorough but never plodding. He uses a variety of source materials, including Klee's own writings (diaries and letters). Grohmann establishes Klee's lasting importance to art and to painting by asserting, "It is as though he were still among us, to be consulted on every problem of life and art." Grohmann's generous(40 pages, 58 illustrations) and lively essay on Klee is also charming and personal. It combines biography, criticism, a wealth of references, and thought-provoking appreciation. It's generously illustrated with photographs of Klee and his studio, plus ink, tusche, chalk, and pencil drawings, collage, watercolor, tempera, and oil paintings, a woodcut study, and etchings.

The text that accompanies the following forty color plates (a selection of paintings) is the calm, clear art criticism that Grohmann is so good at. The plates' reproduced colors are good but not great. What's best is that Grohmann is such an able teacher. He describes each painting straightforwardly, and then asks intelligent questions, suggests answers that seem well-thought-out, and inspires one to further thought and research. His friendship with Klee gave him some additional understanding of his friend's work and lifelong passions and motives.

A very worthwhile book on a great artist.
