Prevention from the inside out
Dr. Pransky tells the story of a drug- and violence-riddled community in Florida that is turned around by Dr. Roger Mills' low-key, determined approach, called Health Realization. Its premise (simplified) is that we all have the wisdom and strength within to solve life's problems, but our thinking gets in the way. Through the window of parenting, Dr. Mills was able to introduce this concept to the Modello residents and completely change the community's culture. This book gives hope and a direction for all of us working with communities.

From Humble Beginnings to Scaling the World's Highest Peaks
Born in McAlester, Oklahoma, to the poorest of parents, Jack Allsup seemed destined to never reach any meaningful success in life. Early on, Jack reached for a little higher condition in life. He became a paratrooper in the U.S. Army, a telephone company lineman, then a design engineer for Project Mercury--America's first manned space program. Attempting to satisfy the emptiness in his spirit, Jack scaled the highest peak in each of the 50 United States and each of the world's continents: he organized and led the l987 Mt. Everest North Face Expedition. Jack's quest for fulfillment was satisfied only when he accepted the love of a forgiving God. It is through his story that I came to know Jack Allsup. As an editor, I helped Jack put his words to paper in this biography. Jack is a great, but very humble man --who now makes his home in Little Rock, Arkansas, among loving friends and Arkansans who encouraged him to reach heights beyond his highest hopes and dreams. Mountains of Hope offers readers a taste of adventure and a challenge to believe in Jesus Christ who, not only kept Jack safe through his many expeditions, continues to keep him safe and grants peace in the face of adventures yet to come.

The "Test" was great!
I really thought that the story about cheating, "The Test", was a valuable lesson for all students, regardless of faith. The structure and craftsmanship was equisite. Over all, I am tiring of this series but have alot of hope for it now. Well done, Ms. Ayers and Canfield/Hansen of course.
Once again, this series has made an outstanding contribution to the lives of people everywhere. In these troubled times, it is truly a blessing that this thoughtful volume has been provided for Christian teens everywhere.
The reason why this series has struck such a chord with readers across generations is the feeling of authenticity it generates within readers. My only criticism is that some of the stories sometimes seem a bit formulaic. A striking exception is found in the story "The Test", which involves the dilemma of a student who cheats on a school exam. The narrative pulls off the rare combination of being impecably written while still ringing true with its audience. As someone who works with young people on a regular basis, I know it will inspire my students for years to come. Thank you.

The most inspirational book I have ever read
I never write reviews, but everyone needs to know how wonderful and what an impact this book can have on a person. I am not a very religious person, but I picked up this book and found, that being religious or not had nothing to do with enjoying and appreciating this book. I LOVED IT and could relate so much thank you KIMBERLY KIRBERGER, once again.

A Great Read!!!
The minute I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. As an reader of the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series I was blown away by this particular book. I found it inspiring and moving, making me laugh and even cry. I recommend it to any teenager who wants to feel more connected to Christianity and regain their sense of faith.

Interesting, unusual and poignant romance
What an interesting couple - he's an executioner; she's a refugee from the guillotine and revolutionary France.

Jack never intended to get involved with this woman or her problems but found himself speaking up for her when she is caught stealing a horse. Even worse, she is remanded to his custody for six months labor. Now he has to share his home and spend most everyday in her company. And this sentence also puts a crimp in Claudia's plans to find the father she never knew - a Scottish earl that may or may not know of her existence.

Claudia goes from pampered courtesan to working in a tavern. From fearing and loathing Jack and his profession to respecting and liking Jack the man. He surprises her in that he is actually very kind and gentle, an animal lover, a vegetarian and most unbelievably a virgin. He has vowed that he would never take a woman because of what happened to his mother - seduced and left to bear a child out of wedlock. But Claudia is quite a temptation for him. She's beautiful and resilient and he finds himself wanting her badly.

Though she had been the mistress of a guillotined French aristocrat for seven years, she knows little of love and tenderness - especially not from a man. But Jack's kind and gentle nature and handsome looks attract her as her former lover never did. They fall in love and then must face the villainous actions of Jack's half brother, his stepfather, not to mention Claudia's nefarious father. But love conquers all and Jack and Claudia are finally free to begin their lives anew.

A very sweet love story.

Hope Against History : The Course of Conflict in Northern Ireland
Published in Hardcover by (1999)
Author: Jack Holland
Amazon base price: $6.99
List price: $25.00 (that's 72% off!)
Average review score:

The Troubles... for beginners.
Holland deserves credit for writing a book that makes the Troubles accessible to readers who really don't know much about it, but I have to say, having read other books on the subject (Coogan, Bell, Moloney) and having followed events in NI for years, I found his analysis too often simplistic and facile, particularly as relates to the recent Peace Process. Read Ed Moloney's "Secret History of the IRA" and you'll know what I'm talking about.

A Qucik Read
This history of the Troubles is chocked full of people and places involved with the Northern Ireland Struggle. The volume of names shows the depth of research conducted by the author. Hope Against History gives a good basis to begin in dpeth reading on the various actors involved. This book clarifies the divisions in the military and political struggle.

Best book to learn of the Troubles of Northern Ireland
Hope against History is an accessible, fascinating account and could easily be used as a textbook on the "troubles" of Northern Ireland. Holland provides all the gritty details of life in the war torn ghettoes of Belfast and Derry and does a great job of bringing the conflict to life for the reader. Not only is it a fine history of the conflict but a very engaging portrayal of Northern Ireland culture, both protestant and catholic. A must read for anyone with even a passing interest in Irish or British history and a wonderfully quick read for those well acquainted with all the violence and horror of the Troubles.

Hope: Your Heart's Deepest Longings: 9 Studies...
This is a great book to introduce the concept of Biblical Hope. I have used study guide books in the past and did not expect to be impressed. I found that I learned things that I did not already know and was able to apply them for an eternal perspective and thus a Biblical hope. It is also a good book for a group. We had many different levels of Biblical knowledge in our group and benefitted from the range of questions that are provided. The notes in the back of the book provide additional insight by exploring historical context and other authors' words on the subject.

Another great Matthew Hope Thriller
Ed McBain has a wonderful way of weaving a thriller around a nursery ryme. Each chapter moving along the poem and introducing the characters. It doesn't matter that the cow with the crumpled horn is an elderly woman' this adaptation of the ryme is brilliant. The story begins with Matthew Hope being hired to represented a farmer (who grew the corn) accused of murdering his brother. As always Matthew is convinced his client is innocent and sets out (with the help of PI Warren Chambers) to prove it. As is often the case there are a number of little side plots which mostly come together to solve the crime.

For the today's disillusioned believer..........
I read this book sometime back and it made wonderful sense to me - more so specially as I was in a situation where nothing made sense to me and the "tomorrow" that I was dreaming of was very bleak... That was when I read this book and I was amazed that so much wealth of information could be obtained from a book that is more or less slightened compared to the other books from the Holy Bible. And it did the trick - it gave me hope, the insights enabled me to set my priorities right. A perfect book for anyone whose future is not so bright, who is disillusioned, who is completely demoralized - and for one who has lost hope in a wonderful "tomorrow". One of the best books for Bible study on the book of Joshua from the Holy Bible.

I'll Hold you in Heaven
As the Infertility Host for Bella Online, I thought this would be a good book to read. Jack Hayford has written a book entitled "I'll Hold You in Heaven - Healing and Hope for the Parent Who has Lost a Child through Miscarriage, Stillbirth, Abortion, or Early Infant Death." This book discusses the life of the child who has died during pregnancy or shortly after. This is done in 8 chapters. Chapter 1 is "The Gift of Loves." Chapter 2 is "When Does Significance Begin?" Chapter 3 is "Life to What Degree?" Chapter 4 is "Destiny in the Afterworld." Chapter 5 is "In Heaven as a Person." Chapter 6 is "Instruments of Healing." Chapter 7 is "The Heartbeat of Love." Chapter 8 is "Three Steps to Loving."

Although this book says that it is for any parent who has lost a child anytime from early in a pregnancy to shortly after a baby is born, I find that to not be true. This books seems to be more for someone who has had an abortion. There is a need for a book to minister to someone who has had an abortion, but I do not feel that this book should be marketed to people who have had a miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death, when it actually does not truly reach out to them.

In spite of the fact that I have a problem with how this book is marketed, I do appreciate Chapter 6 "Instruments of Healing." It gives 3 steps to take in working through your grief to reach a place of healing. The first is "Understanding the Truth About God." God can take the pain that you are feeling and use it for our good. The second is "Embrace the Process of Grief." Losing a child is truly a loss regardless of what anyone tells you. It is natural to grieve for a lost loved one. Let yourself grieve. The third is "Put Guilt in Its Place." Guilt is a part of the grief cycle. When you lose a child, you are sure that something you did or did not do caused your baby to die. One must confront their guilt and determine whether it is real or not. Whether your guilt is real or not, God can and will help you through this. You can reach a place of healing.

Helped me cope with what happened to the baby
After two years of infertility and two consecutive pregnancy losses at 8 weeks and 13 weeks, I have read many excellent books that helped me understand and deal with the emotional aspects of my miscarriages. However, none of them dealt as directly as I would have liked with what happens to the baby. I instinctively felt that the baby would be in heaven, but I was clueless as to what kind of form the baby would take, if I would know my baby when I got to heaven, etc.

This book addressed these questions very directly and with excellent scriptural back-up. I now have every confidence that I will spend eternity with both of my children, and that we will know and love each other when we are reunited.

This book is NOT a guide for dealing with the grief aspects of pregnancy loss, but it will answer many questions about the reality of your child as a living being. The answers to these questions were a big help to me in my quest for healing.

"Dreams that become unfulfilled;...
...anticipated joy that was suddenly quenched." Quoted from "I'll Hold You In Heaven." If you have ever experienced the "wrenching loss of a child in the womb or during the weeks and months following birth," this book was written for you. Jack Hayford's book will help you to sort through all those confusing feelings you may be experiencing and answer a lot of your questions. This book will bring comfort to the discontented soul of a parent who has lost a child through miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion or early infant death. I highly recommend it. It is the first book I give out to all my friends who have experienced this type of loss.
