With this natural inclination, it is no wonder that there is an area of mathematics that deals with symmetric situations and their consequences. Some of the most interesting are found in this book, which makes it fun to read. It starts with the symmetry of placing a small, circular mirror near your eye and then looking across at another mirror, which generates the view of a series of shrinking circles. This is one of those problems that amuses as much as it instructs, and certainly can be experimentally verified.
A chapter is devoted to the "simple" question of what the center of a figure is. This is an excellent example of a question that is much more complex than it first appears. To answer, it is necessary to determine precisely what is meant by center and then perform the relevant computations. Questions are interspersed throughout the text with solutions at the end of each chapter. While there are some problems that involve calculus, most of them require only that you be able to visualize figures and solve basic algebraic expressions.
It is human to search out situations that are symmetric and we do our best to change things so they are. Many of the most attractive and entertaining problems in symmetry are presented in this book, which makes it a delight to read. Most of the problems would make excellent "unusual" exam or classroom demonstration problems.
