A Christian version of a Louis L'Amour novel!
Brazos Fortune is determined to find his dream under some type of cross. However, he is forced to leave behind his youngest child, beloved Dacee. An adventurer herself, she runs away.

Gold fever, hunger and hardship mark the adventures and close calls suffered by Brazos and his friends. Bly certainly does a good job of painting the surroundings clearly to the reader.

This is the first book of the series, Fortunes of the Black Hills.

Stephen Bly Captures the Spirit of Dakota
This was the first book I've read by Stephen Bly, and I am more than anxious to read the next in the series. As a former resident of the Black Hills, I found Bly's descriptions of the Dakota landscape accurate enough to make me homesick. His characters are well developed and sympathetic, and I especially enjoy his sparkling dialogue passages that help develop the characters and bring comic relief and a sense of comraderie between the characters not unlike the good natured humorof a good John Wayne movie. I look forward to reading the second book in this series.

A Dangerous Quest
Brazos Fortune sets out on a journey for a new home after locals threaten the lives and property of his family. He follows a vision he receives of a Dakota cross and faces corrupt lawmen, wild outlaws, and a bitter winter as he wrestles with the temptations of gold and a burning desire to be reunited with his family. Each family member seems so real and alive. Reader is pulled in to care about what happens to them.

A cool mix
This is collection of short stories that offers a wide mix of speculative genres. Fantasy, SF, horror, and just plain weird. The stories run the gambit and most are good. "Jeo Defined" and "Moon Warrior" were excellent stories and well worth purchasing the book. Even just the so-so stories were enjoyable and all the authors are names to keep a look out for. In the end, this is a book of up and coming writers and a few of them will no doubt be big names someday.

A Great Read
I didn't know what to expect from this collection of short stories but I was happily surprised. The stories cover a wide range from fantasy, science fiction, and horror to those hard to classify strange stories. Each one is worth reading. My favorites were the one about a radio personality who was singing the Siren's song and the one about a criminal who is forced to undergo "augmentation" to control him. Some wild stuff for a great read.

Sit on uncle Rudy's knee and hear stories about Old Baldy
Mr. Stevens's Book has such an innocent ring to it. Acknowledging he was just a small part of the big picture, he wrote this book at the urging of his children and grandchildren. The book reads as if you were a wide eyed, sniffeling little urchin sitting on Mr. Steven's lap as he shares his whole military experience with you...

".the train went by a big mountain in Washington with alot of snow on it. They call that mounatin Mt. Rainier. ..on my first patrol I fell asleep and was shaken awake by my own sargeant!..on another patrol trying to get a prisoner so we could R&R in Japan, we managed to capture an enemy soldier sleeping against a tree...only to find he had been dead for a week!"

Its not all fun, games and bedside tales in this book. One patrol that suffered 11 casualties left the author wondering 'if the military brass had enough sense to get out of bed without breaking a leg.' Stevens also refers to the fragging of an unpopular Colonel 'Ortega'(the name is fictitious) with two sticks of dynamite under his bunk. Like many other Korean War vets, he feels the blood shed over nameless ridges--Old Baldy, in this case--was senseless. The terrain they could survey from the top of old baldy could easily be searched by spotter plane.

Despite some sour spots--the author speaks unkindly about the performance of 'a platoon of Puerto Ricans'-- this is a good story. Not a cuss nor swear word to be found. As a sense of gloom and forebodeing swept the troops going across the sea of Japan from Sasebo to Pusan, the author glumly reports that "there sure was a sense that the SHIP soon was gonna hit the SAND."

Great first person story.
Old Ugly Hill is a great survivors story of the give and take war so typified in Korea. One can only imagine the frustration of having to sieze a seemingly useless hill only to lose it to the Red Chinese days later and then have to re-assault it again! This is a great story told in a welcome fireside chat manner the way Grandpa did.

Perspective From an Instructor
While there are other dictionaries out there that do a better job, for the price of this dictionary it is a great reference for Introduction to Sociology students. Definitions range from a few words to a couple of pages. Usually gives a reference to an author connected to the term and other concepts that might be important to the term. Still there are key concepts missing (for instance a definition of methodology) that make this book problematic. This book is not written from a particular standpoint, but at times the definitions are classical.

A Very Helpful Guide
For any student of sociology, this is a welcomed addition to textbooks. The dictionary is also a good addition to the library of someone who just enjoys reading sociology books. It has a bit of a British flair because of its authors, but is really a well-rounded and insightful reference book.

Ross does it again!
I have two corp fin books by Ross and company. This book was purchased while studing for the Level I of the CFA exam. The other book was used in graduate school. Both books are sub par in quality and were not cheap either. Save your money. Don't use this text.

A must
I have a master degree in finance and I believe this is the best work from Stepehen Ross. The book can be utilized for graduate students as well as undergraduate. If you are looking for a book which is extensively comprehensive and at the same time friendly you are looking for this book. It also contains diverse examples involving the use of financial calculators and software. It furnishes a preview on mergers and acquisitions and constantly tends to go beyond corporate to multinational

A very effective tool for introducing Corporate Finance.
I have used this text in two corporate finance courses that I have taken at university and it was very helpful in allowing me to understand the concepts that were being presented in class.

The Zen Shamus
A.W. Hill has a created a totally unique and absorbing central character in Stephen Raszer . A sort of 21st Century Phillip Marlowe , who operates in the spiritual , as well as street realm. Hill asks the reader to absorb a fairly deep bank of background information , and then pays us off in spades with a great ride. I can't wait for the sequel.

This book would make a great film
This book was truly a page-turner. I hardly ever get the time to read books, and I thought I was out of practice, but this book I read in one 7 hour sitting. I really enjoyed the thoughtful analyses of world religious politics and the hints at conspiracy theories. Although at times I found the book a little hard to follow due to obscure references I obviously didn't know, after sticking with it past 3 chapters I ended up understanding and learning more than I have from any other novel I've read in a long time. I also liked the artful way in which the author wove a personal struggle and love story in with the plot. It would make an absolutely amazing film!

Indiana Jones size story!!!
Enoch's Portal tells a tall tale - or is it a tale? - that spans ages, continents and religions with conspiracies on a global basis. This book is a great read. I would highly recommend it to readers of historical fiction, fantasy and those intrigued by quasi-religous quests and conspiracies.

Plot and storyline are great, but major problems with slang
This was a good read, fast-paced with a lot of mystery and intrigue. I also enjoyed the romance that developed between Tanisha and Wheeler. Both of the characters were well developed and both expressed real hesitations about entering into an interracial relationship. The only thing that annoyed me to no end was Cannell's use of black slang. It would have been a great addition to the reality of the scenes if he had known what he was talking about. As a young black college student who often comes in contact with "street slang" I wonder how well Cannell researched this aspect of his novel. Certain street terms were defined incorrectly and therefore used improperly throughout the novel, while others just would never be used in the situations Cannell put them in. But, except for this major distraction, the novel was excellent, especially his examination and portrayal of Tanisha as a strong and resilient black woman...except for when she started "talking street".

Great read! Intriguing plot satisfies!
Believable, easy-to-love characters, locked in a wonderfully weaved plot, make Stephen Cannell's latest book a hard to put down page turner. His main characters and sub characters are real and he mixes the numerous cultures together as they travel toward an incredible ending, leaving you with the feeling you've been on an exciting ride. Recommended for Cannell fans as well as all who love a good mystery.

Jet propelled thriller populated by unforgetable characters.
Stephen J. Cannell has created a stunning book that combines ingenious plotting with insightful characterization. RIDING THE SNAKE slithers through the deadly and byzantine world of Chinese Triads, a deadly variant of organized crime that makes La Cosa Nostra look like the Girl Scouts.

The unlikely hero of Cannell's latest work is Wheeler Cassidy. Wheeler is an American classic, a pathetic, spoiled country club drunk who is resurrected by the perils of Cannell's gripping plot.

The unlikely alliance between Wheeler and a cynical, black cop, Tanisha Williams, is enriched by Cannell's extraordinary gift for idiom and detail. Throughout the book one is struck by the honesty and richness of dialogue. And no matter how treacherous the jeoprady, Cannell manages to enliven the proceedings with unexpected, and completely welcome, humor.

RIDING THE SNAKE is not just a sensational thriller, it is a revelatory expose of the threat posed by Chinese organized crime. Cannell has done his homework. The book is an eye openner.

Cannell plots better than Grisham or Clancy and renders characters with greater resonance than Dilillo or Russo. RIDING THE SNAKE is an unforgetable read and, inevitably, will be a wildly popular movie.

Privileged Information
When I picked up Stephen White's latest book, Warning Signs, I didn't relaize there was a whole series featuring Alan Gregory. So I wanted to start at the beginning. I have to say I found the first Alan Gregory novel a disappointment. It took me forever to get hooked on reading Privileged Information. I was very disappointed in this book, and almost quit reading it a couple of times. Fortunately I also picked up Higher Authority and read it in two sittings. Luckily Stephen White recaptured my interest.

The first in White's Alan Gregory series
Stephen White is a psychologist from Denver, Colorado. This is his first novel, published in 1991. He specializes in murder mystery thrillers with significant psychological overtones. He actually got this book picked up by a major publishing house (Viking Penguin) on his own without an agent which is a major feat. Soon thereafter he was picked up by an agent. As of 2002, he has written 10 novels, several of which have been on the New York Times bestseller list.

The recurring protagonist is a Boulder, Colorado psychologist, Alan Gregory, & there are recurring characters such as Alan's fiancee (later wife) Lauren, and his cop buddy Sam. As someone who lives in Colorado, I have enjoyed the series of books, as they are set in Colorado, & I can identify with the locales. It's also been interesting to watch Alan & Lauren's romance blossom despite significant bumps in the road.

Start with this Stephen White book, & try to read the series in order. Each one is better than the previous one, & the author has become a better writer year by year.

Happy reading!

A super read!!
I have read all of Stephen White's novels and enjoyed them immensely. However, I have to agree with a couple of the other reviewers that reading them in order is best. I failed to do so and one day when I have forgotten the details I will read his whole series from beginning to end. They are that good. In Priviledged Information we are introduced to Alan Gregory who is a very interesting character. This book is a real thriller and very suspenseful. I could not put it down like all of White's books. I find his books every bit as good as Jonathan Kellerman's. Perhaps more so as his relationships with others are explored more deeply than Alex Delaware's.

DANGER!!! DANGER!!!
Steve Hill (and his followers) should be avoided like the plague. His false signs and wonders are enough to take him outside the city gates for God's prescription for a false prophet.

Steve Hill was in the Seattle area and I noticed that he feeds on ad hominem attacks. He sets himself up as a pillar of virtue while condemning those who disagree with him. This type of "authoritarian" behavior is the same as the cults. If you have an ounce of biblical discernment you will test his doctrines with scripture (cf 2 Tim 3:16) and find that they come from another spirit. Mr. Hill however, will not want you to compare his teaching with scripture. He sets himself above the scripture and is ultimately in contempt.

If you want a decent read, do a study on the Reformation. The gospel has been eclipsed in our day. Satan is mightily using people like Steve Hill. We need to be equipped to refute this unbiblical, un-Christian teaching in this godless society.

Remember, Christ didn't rebuke the sinner and tax collector. Christ declared "woe" (or "damned be unto you") to the religious elite of the first century. This guy along with Rick Joyner, Wimber, CP Wagner, etc. are some of the most dangerous men in Christianity today.

Now, Now, people................................
Geesh, people are so critical of this man, and the out pouring of the Holy Spirit through this man. Steve Hill's ministry played a key role in the bringing forth of one of the greatest revivals in north American history, the Brownsville Revival. In which i will be attending school there, at the Brownsville Revival School of Ministry. Granted that the bible does say to beware of false prophets and teachers of the Gospel, but i assure you that i have researched the scriptures and juidge this mans teachings and actions according top the word, and he is very accurate in his teachings and actions. By the way people criticised Jesus way more than they will ever criticise Steve Hill. Jesus was also more authorative, and rebukative, and more blunt than Steve Hill. And Jesus is our prime example, he is your Saviour and mine as well. And he is also the Saviour of Steve hill. Steve does his best to try and be an example of Jesus. So if you're going to put anyone under the microscope, i would sugest that you put yourself under it. And do not touch God's annointed. otherwise danger may befall you. By the way steve hill is one of my favorite preachers along with John Kilpatick, Benny Hinn, and Dan Slaikeu( my pastor), i love em.................. I would recommend that take time studying up on the Holy Spirit. You will be Blessed.

Holy fire messages
This book has an "in your face" message. If you do not like messages that will challange you, do not read this book. If your not willing to go to the next level in your walk with God, like I said before, do not read this book.

Stephen Hill writes simple messages in this book to challange the body of Christ to move to the next level. We, as the body of Christ, needs to be challanged to be radical and world changers for Christ. Todays "gospel" has been watered down and has been "soften". The gospel is supposed to be radical, challenging, "in your face" (of course rooted in love), and with FIRE!

Before you throw your stones at Stephen Hill, please look at the fruits of his ministry and his life and try not to feed off criticism from other sources (sources are not always right). You may dislike his style of ministry but we are called to work in unity. Stephen Hill has a heart after souls and has a heart to bring a messages of repentance to the body of Christ.
