i hadn't heard of this book before i picked it up. i'm surprised more of a fuss hasn't been made over this book, particularly in toronto, where a good portion of it is set. i would compare it in quality to ernest gaines or alice walker. but i guess the canadian market for black fiction is pretty limited... it's a very readable, complicated story that is a pleasure to follow. langston cane's interaction with his own past inspires me to look into my own.

I saw Lawrence Hill on television discussing his latest book, Black Berry, Sweet Juice, and I went online to find it but couldn't. So I ordered this one instead. I was already reading Fay Weldon's latest when it arrived, but the front-cover blurb by Joyce Carol Oates was enticement enough for me to open it right away. Wow! I couldn't put it down. Such a skillful writer, and with such a flare for character development. Enjoyed the book so much I'ver recently ordered two more copies to give away as gifts.

I confess that the only reason I first picked up this book was that it was a required text for an English course I was taking. Once I started it, however, I found I couldn't put it down!
Langston Cane V, a man of mixed race, is lost and adrift in both the multicultural centres of Toronto, and Oakville, one of the WASPiest communities in Ontario. His marriage has failed, he's lost his job, and he doesn't really know who he is. Langston decides to study his family history, and through the lives of four other Langston Canes, a variety of perspectives on black history and culture in Canada and the United States come to light. In the meantime, Langston himself learns what it means to be of mixed race, at once neither black or white, and both. An intelligent look at racial and historical issues, this book is also a well-written, wonderfully entertaining set of stories-within-a-story.
I enjoyed this book so much, I headed out to the library to find Hill's first novel, Some Great Thing, another fabulous, yet underpublicized book. If possible, I liked it even better.

This is collection of short stories that offers a wide mix of speculative genres. Fantasy, SF, horror, and just plain weird. The stories run the gambit and most are good. "Jeo Defined" and "Moon Warrior" were excellent stories and well worth purchasing the book. Even just the so-so stories were enjoyable and all the authors are names to keep a look out for. In the end, this is a book of up and coming writers and a few of them will no doubt be big names someday.

I didn't know what to expect from this collection of short stories but I was happily surprised. The stories cover a wide range from fantasy, science fiction, and horror to those hard to classify strange stories. Each one is worth reading. My favorites were the one about a radio personality who was singing the Siren's song and the one about a criminal who is forced to undergo "augmentation" to control him. Some wild stuff for a great read.

I don't read much but I would like to say that this was a very good book. I read it for a school project and it was very interesting. I like the characters and it never makes you bored. Hope you like it just as much as I!

Mahatma Grafton is a university graduate who, having no idea what he wants to do with his life, returns to his hometown of Winnipeg to work for a newspaper. Over the course of his first year on the job, he discovers purpose in his life, with the help of a colourful array of characters, including a welfare crusader, a burned-out fellow reporter, an unlikely french-language-rights activist, and a visiting journalist from Cameroon.
Aside from being incredibly well-written and entertaining, this book is an intelligent reflection of Canadian issues, including race, language, government policy and opinions regarding our American neighbors.
Some Great Thing is loosely connected to Hill's second book, Any Known Blood, which is also a fabulous read.

I learn nothing about this topic before. Once I read it, I find the knowledge is useful for me for future reference. Keep one for later use. Concepts are easy to understand.

This book may be understood by readers with little or no background in cellular technology. It starts with the very basics of cellular and covers more advanced topics including the details of AMPS, TDMA, CDMA, and GSM technologies. The material is well organized and clear. This book is very useful for IT managers as well as for those who want to make careers in cellular engineering.
Overall, a great book and highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about cellular technologies.

Kennedy's research for this book was funded by the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) for whom he also served as consulting historian. Hence, the strength of this book lies in its focus on city planning in the 20th century.
The first 100 pages are devoted to the period from 1630-1900, but anybody with a special interest in that period is better off with Walter Muir Whitehill's "Boston - A Topographical History".
Kennedy's writing about the 20th century also is more animated. Chapers follow administration (Fitzgerald, Curley, Collins, White & Flynn) and Kennedy gives a very readable account of the development of urban city planning in Boston and how it has been helped (and hindered) by politics. As is to be expected, the City Planning Board's and BRA's history and involvement in planning are treated in some detail.

I am a vegetarian. I've read the book and found numerous errors. Some are little, some medium, some of the worst are omissions. I have read two reviews of this book that pan it. One in Environmental Ethics, the other in Ethics. I respect the author's intentions and respect him for them.

Though I've only read Chapter 4, "The Argument for Global Ecology," for an ecology class, I found it to be very eye-opening. It, and a supportive and like-minded friend, have convinced me to go mostly vegetarian. Hill uses clear writing, sobering facts, and a balanced perspective to make his case for environmental vegetarianism. The reason I gave it only 4 stars is because, while I haven't read the other chapters, I'm not generally convinced by animal rights or health reasons for vegetarianism. However, Chapter 4 alone changed my life.

This is the book that convinced me to become a vegetarian. The arguments are well-presented and the author addresses many important issues such as myths about vegetarianism.

I found this book exremely biased, especially on its treatment of ethics and environmentalism, which were extremely collectivistic and altruistic. I felt like I was also overcharged for the text book, for something so vaguely written.

Most textbooks do a very poor job of addressing current issues in a clear, accurate, concise manner. This book, however, is to be commended. I especially found the resource information and discussion cases to be a tremendous benefit. The discussion questions and current event topics encourage the students to explore these issues outside of class, in their businesses and in the community. Business and society is a topic of extreme importance. Unfortunately, it often goes overlooked in so many universities and colleges. Overall, I rank this book as a worthwhile investment and hope the authors continue to explore these important issues in business and education.
