Renaissance Woman of the 20th century....
First off, I must give praise to Angelika Taschen for publishing this grand, aesthetic book featuring stills of the life and work of misunderstood renaissance-woman Leni Riefenstahl... What a bold, beautiful result it has become... Personally I would have weighted the pictures of the "Triumpf des Willens"/"Olympia" period more in favour of the later Riefenstahl works, but none the less, this is a brilliant "from the cradle to the grave" document of the amazing life and art of Leni... (Although Leni actually, to the best of my knowledge, isn't dead yet...She is approaching her 100th year of existance!....) Like Ernst Jünger, who lived to be 102 year old!, Leni Riefenstahl seem to transcend both time and history....

"How could I not admire you, for you are the genius of film and have raised it to heights seldom achieved." Jean Cocteau

Wonderful Photos, Great Book
This is the story, with wonderful photographs, of the many phases of the life of this incredible woman. Her long and colorful life is chronicled in this excellent work, which includs many previously unpublished photos. At age 71, Leni started Scuba diving, and underwater photography, beginning yet another career and perhaps her best work. Riefenstahl was very involved in FIVE LIVES and the book gives considerable detail and insight into her personal and professional life. It is a wonderful collection. Not to be missed by any serious student of the history of film or photography.

FASCINATING PICTORIAL BIOGRAPHY OF A CONTROVERSIAL WOMAN
One remarkable woman, five remarkable careers. A dancer, actress, film-maker, photographer and deep-sea diver, Leni Riefenstahl, 98 years old and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, has excelled in each field of endeavor. Her contributions to the art and technique of film-making were vast, most notably in her 1938 film Olympia. Critically acclaimed for her work under Nazi rule but harshly criticized after the war, Riefenstahl persevered, completing in 1954 Tiefland, which she starred in, directed and edited. In the 1960s and 70s she traveled to the Sudan and extensively photographed the Nuba tribes, publishing three books of this work. Ready for yet another challenge, Riefenstahl took up deep-sea diving at the age of 71, beginning a new chapter as an underwater photographer. Though she has attracted much attention throughout her life and has been the subject of many books, articles, and films, LENI RIEFENSTAHL- FIVE LIVES is the first book to showcase her entire career in pictures. Produced in close collaboration with Riefenstahl herself, the book includes famous images as well as many previously unpublished pictures from her private archives. The book features photographs that show all of Riefenstahl's careers; on stage as a dancer, on the set as an actress and film-maker, and includes film stills and her own photographs. The biography, international bibliography, and detailed filmography complement the illustrated section with extensive information about Riefenstahl's personal and professional life. Precise commentaries about the pictures can be found in the comprehensive appendix. Admirers and critics alike will be impressed with this sweeping visual tribute.

One of the best translations of Sor Juana's "Response."
One of the finest recent translations of Sor Juana's "Response." The authors have done an outstanding job of translating and annotating the text. A "must read" for any Sor Juana scholar.

Suddenly, poetry makes sense
I used this book for a Spanish literature course. Poetry was always difficult for me to understand and appreciate. However, I enjoyed reading the translations of Sor Juana's poetry. Sor Juana rocks! I learned how powerful poetry can be to express thoughts and feelings about society and oneself. The information provided by the authors about Sor Juana's life and their commentary on the poetry made it easier for me to understand. The translations are very well done. My favorite part is the in La Respuesta (p.77-81) where Sor Juana uses her vast knowledge of mythology, history, and the Bible as proof that women are strong and intelligent. Sor Juana uses Deborah, Queen of Sheba, Rahab, Esther, Xenobia, etc. as examples. I did not notice a loss of meaning which is the danger of translating literature that has complex meanings. After checking out Sor Juana and hearing Maya Angelou speak, I don't dismiss poetry so easily anymore. I recommend this book for the Comparative Literature, Spanish, Latin-American studies, and Feminist Studies majors.

Ehhh...
I found Sor Juana dull the first time I read her 'Responce' and even more dull when I reread it. She is very good at being subtle though, and alot of the time its what shes not saying that makes you think, I don't know if it was the translators fault, or what, but I just didn't enjoy it. But her poetry was beautifully translated in this edition.

A superb introduction to a great mind
Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz is one of those remarkable literary figures whose extraordinary body of work forces one to either reevaluate or refine one's ideas about the complex interrelationships between religion, gender, national identity, and ethnicity. A nun who lived in seventeenth century Mexico, she distinguished herself as a poet, playwright, and prose writer.

"Poems, Protest, and a Dream" is an excellent introduction to the life and work of this fascinating woman. This selection of her works includes her famous prose piece addressed to "Sor Filotea de la Cruz," a hearty helping of her poetry, and two selections from her dramatic corpus. The bilingual format of the text, with Sor Juana's Spanish original on each even-numbered page and Margaret Sayers Peden's elegant English translation on each odd-numbered page, allows one to easily compare the two versions.

The distinguished scholar Ilan Stavans has written an extensive 32 page introduction. Stavans describes in detail the historical and cultural context from which Sor Juana wrote; his sensitive and intelligent portrait of the woman and her age made me appreciate and enjoy her writings even more.

Sor Juana takes on themes that are still relevant (and often hotly debated) more than three centuries after she wrote these works. The response to Sor Filotea is a defense of female intellectual aspiration in a male-dominated culture; in the defense Sor Juana critically responds to those who use the Judeo-Christian Bible as a tool for intimidating and marginalizing women. With certain factions of the "religious right" still using the Bible as a weapon for demonizing certain individuals and social agendas, Sor Juana's words continue to ring fresh and clear.

Equally extraordinary is Sor Juana's loa (a dramatic scene which prefaces a longer play) to "The Divine Narcissus." The loa is an allegory depicting the early contact between Christianity and the religion of the Aztecs; in this piece I detect a subtle satirical thrust which adds to the complexity of Sor Juana's vision.

Sor Juana was a masterful stylist in multiple literary genres, and her depth of psychological and moral insight adds to her stature as a literary giant. Nobody should consider herself or himself literate in the fields of women's studies or Latin American studies without having read the works of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. "Poems, Protest, and a Dream" is an excellent resource for both independent reading and classroom use. Enjoy Sor Juana's artistry, and reflect on her ideas.

Female Intellectualism
A great intellectual is not commonly thought of to be a woman, especially in 17th century New Spain. In the midst of the highly structured Baroque literary period, an illegitimate child was baptized as Juana Ramírez de Asbaje, spent her adolescence at court, and left to become a nun where she could continue her studies in peace, rather than marrying. Although she was almost entirely self-educated, the word quickly spread of her intelligence. This caused envy and animosity towards her that she tried to avoid her entire adult life. Four years before she died, the church forced her to give up her writings and worldly studies. In her letter of response to this request, (included in the book) she became the first woman in Latin America to defend her gender's right to study and write as men could. Much of her work was commissioned, but more is being discovered of her autobiographical writings. This book includes one of the few known poems (Primero Sueño) that was not commissioned. The book is in Spanish and English on opposing pages. This is very advantageous if you are bilingual, and even if you aren't, I can't say enough about Margaret Sayers Peden's translations. Not only does she give you as close to word for word; she also preserves the original structure, themes, and rhyme schemes that are so essential in Baroque literature. Even if you go no further than this book, you will not be disappointed. It has a very complete collection of her most famous works. Unfortunately, so few people in the English-speaking U.S. has even heard of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. I was first introduced to her wonderful poetry in a Mexican History / English dyad in college. Since that first poem I read, I have been searching for books of her works, and about her life. I highly recommend the addiction.

Ur-Ine Double Trouble
This book and it's author are a good example of what a highly educated person can produce to support their business of earning money by testifying for defense attornies. It twists truth and mixes it with truth and outright misleading information. The author knows enough about toxicology to fool the uneducated and ignorant. It's a good advertisement for his services and shows to what length he'll go to earn a buck.

Constant consistent accurate truth it is not.

Urine Testing Shocker
This book is absolutely necessary for everyone to read and own because in the future, it will be almost impossible for anyone to avoid urine testing. There is a major move in the United States to force urine testing upon the public. The mandatory program is called "stick and dip." Mandatory urine testing is being considered in public schools, in court rooms, on our public highways, etc. It's already mandatory in a wide range of settings -- to list a few, doctor's offices, hospitals, employment, insurance.

This book is well written and explains in very clear detail what urine testing is all about. It is easy to understand and easy to explain to those who insist upon urine testing. This book is shocking because it reveals the real truth about urine testing and the irreparable damage and injury that is being done to society.

This book is not written for drug abusers so they can avoid detection. It is written for the innocent consumer who isn't aware that what he or she ingests could lead them down a road of disaster with no remedy. The author courageously arms the innocent consumer with knowledge to protect themselves against the urine testing Gestapo. Don't leave home without this book.

Important, informative, timely.
In Ur-ine Trouble: The Truth About Drug Tests, Dr. Kent Holtorf identifies what common foods will cause a false positive drug test; explains how African-Americans and minorities can be at a disadvantage for certain types of drug tests; reveals what women can be tested for without their knowledge; and shows what household products can cover up drugs in human urine. Quite literally, what you had for breakfast could cost you your job in this present age of random drug testing in the workplace. Ur-ine Trouble: The Truth About Drug Tests is an important, informative, timely addition to personal, health center, and community library medical reference collections.

One big run
Lieutenant Marosi of the border patrol recognizes the body of his friend Eva who was shot while trying to cross the border from Hungary to Austria in 1959. In order to understand what drove his friend to her death, he follows the trail of her life, and finds Livia, who's in a hospital after being shot by her husband. He finds out that Eva was strong in her beliefs in a dangerous time, and that Eva was having an affair with Livia. Galgóczi's amazing novel is full of Hungarian politics, as well as character studies of people struggling with low expectations and betrayals. The book is also the basis of the movie "Another Way", but the book is much more clear about Eva's motivations for trying to leave the country.

Foolish Men: Sor Juana Ines De LA Cruz As Spiritual Protagonist, Educational Prism, and Symbol for Hispanic Women

An informative book, but misleading for sholarly studies.
Foolish Men! exhibits a thorough historical research of the time and political atmosophere surrounding Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. However, there was too much focus on the bishops and other political figures (all men) and little discussion on Sor Juana. The title and the preface both suggest the text will delve into Sor Juana as "spiritual protagonist, educational prism, and a symbol for women," but there was little connection between the historical backgrounds of the bishops and its effects on Sor Juana, specifically how a new generation of hispanic women can see Sor Juana as a symbol of strength. Overall the text was well-written but lacked a strong argument connecting the theological past of Sor Juana with modern education. This text is more for the curious reader than the Sor Juana scholar.

Creative fun ways to make sushi!
Great sushi cookbook with photos for every recipe! Lots of creative sushi ideas for holidays & other special occasions. Colorful rice & decorating ideas can be used for tasty meals or snacks. There are also recipes for other foods that can accompany sushi. One of my favorite desert items was "Deep Fried Sesame Dumplings" is often served in asian restaurants.

One thing missing from this cookbook is the recipe for "sakura-denbu" (mashed & seasoned fish) which if you have the "Sushi For Parties" book it's called "Oboro" on page 25. If you don't have that cook book here's the recipe:

Oboro Ingredients: 7 oz (200g) ground white flesh fish, 1 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp sake, dash red food coloring. Directions: Wrap ground fish in a cloth & wash in water using a squeezing action. Change water twice & get rid of fat. Squeeze out excess water & grind in a mortar. Add food coloring dissolved in sake & sugar, grind so that the color becomes uniform. Transfer to a saucepan & cook over low heat. Mix well with chopsticks until fluffy. Spread on a tray & let cool.

I highly recommend this cookbook! It's well worth adding to your cookbook collection. Your family & friends will enjoy all the fun sushi you can make! :)

A fun alternative to formal sushi.
I recently bought Fun & Fancy Sushi after I discovered that I am sensitive to wheat products, much like an allergy.

Fun & Fancy Sushi offers easy alternatives to the sushi one usually finds at a sushi bar in a Japanese restaurant. If the thought of eating raw fish is worrisome, this is the book for you, because with the exception of fish roe, the ingredients are either vegetable, cooked fish or meat. Many of the sushi recipes offered are balls of rice (the Japanese equivalent to sandwiches) with various flavorings added. In addition, there are recipes for more elaborate and colorful sushi for parties.

Along with the recipes, the authors include tips on how to properly cook in a rice cooker, as well as historical information and regional variations. The numerous color photos on almost every page are enticing and helpful.

My only warning is that this book is probably best for those who have tried to cook Asian food before, since there are a few things left out, like what kind of rice to use. For instance, Uncle Ben's rice will not do, you'll need to use either the cal-rose rice or jasmine rice for these recipes to work. Also, if you do not have access to an Asian market, and you lack some creativity, you might be puzzled by some (not all) of the recipes. I've given it rating of 5 stars because I've looked at a number of similar books, and this one is the best I've seen. It gives traditional and modern recipes without being too outlandish (one book I saw had a recipe for Nutella sushi).

Overall, it's a good cookbook and it will provide you with some healthful alternatives to a grilled cheese sandwich, as well as some fun additions to your party that will amaze your friends.
