Spare me
Don't wanne even get closer to something remotely associated with "BUTCHER" Harris....

EVIL NEEDS SOMEONE TO DO ITS JOB ...
Sometimes evil needs someone to to his dirty job. In war, there's no quarter given or taken. Arthur Harris was C-in-C Bomber Command in WW II, and he led RAF bombers to destroy German cities, with never regretting. In doing so, thousands (almost 50%) of RAF's aircrew perished or were taken prisoner, with what gain? Even today the answer isnot clear. What is clear to me is that Harris never once lost his sleep for the thousands of people (British and German) that his orders sent to die, always under cover of "Orders are orders". He apparently felt joy doing his job.

A harsh and realistic account
Harris was head of bomber command in WWII for the british. This account starts with his initial military service in africa in the first world war where he particiopated in the longest forced march to combat known in modern history. He became (by shear nepotism in his own words) an officer in the flying corps and saw action in mesopotania (now basically IRAQ). He rose to become head of the british airforce. He analyses phases of the war from this high perspective. For instance, balancing aircarft production and crew training against losses over germany, produced grim statistics like an 'acceptable' loss rate of 4% of aircraft and men PER MONTH. tactics for window (now called chaff foil dropped to blind radar) introduction and decisions for its deployment are discussed. Here the germans made the wrong decision. They did not even try to reseach conter measures for chaff in the fear that the allies would hear about it. Harriss took the correct gamble and used it. The effects were devesting. The normal error for night bombing was five miles due mainly to the effect of german radar directed ground fire. With Window this error went down to 1 and a half miles. This increased the bomb / incendary concentration and caused the worlds first fire storm in Hamburg in 1943. After the raids 74% of all buildings were destroyed in this city. He is almost silent on the dresden raid. "Atomic Explosives" are discussed, but the full implications are not realised. I think estimates of a simple atomic bomb were an equivalent of 2000 tons of TNT. The first one released about 14,000 tons TNT equivalent energy. This period saw RADAR and RADIO navigation progress at an amazing rate. In this book it is seen from the usability and effect perspective. Essential reading for WWII historians...

Doesn't shed much light
This book gives virtually no driving directions or driving times - an email query to the publisher was not acknowledged. It claims that the only way to fly in is to Albuquerque - in fact, United flies to Santa Fe, as I discovered while boarding my plane to Albuquerque - giving me an extra hour's drive coming and going. The maps are inadequate at best - few of the attractions/lodgings mentioned are shown. Hotel listings are incomplete, and biased toward the high end. Admission fees to attractions - often as high as $10/person - are not given. Many sights are mentioned (Anasazi cliff dwellings, Mesa Verde) without a description, but are not in the index. No chart of annual temperatures was given - that I could see - I found out the hard way that it gets very, very cold in the winter. In short, using this book to plan and travel was an extremely frustrating experience.

A great travel book on New Mexico
We (Kaatje and Justin) live in New Mexico, and every holiday or free weekend we use this guide to lead us to new exciting and beautiful places. This book is the perfect travel companion for anyone interested in smaller, off the beaten path places. This book led us to discover Las Vegas, NM, a (yet) not so touristy place unlike Taos or Sante Fe. Thanks to this guide, we enjoyed the free road side Hot Springs located in a pristine alpine valley, and delicious restaurants that put the more known places to shame. It has small eateries and interesting museums, parks like the little known Three Rivers Petroglyph National Monument with thousands of drawings, on the way from Socorro to Alamogordo. Yet again, this is a place not mentioned in other tourist maps or books. I would recommend for anyone really interested in traveling through New Mexico to also have DeLorme Topographic Map of New Mexico with them for references and the smaller roads. The general RandMcNally or AAA maps just don't cut it. Those topo maps are only about 16 dollars and will work great with the Hidden New Mexico book or any travelguide. Check out Chaco Canyon National Monument as well, and stay in El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, you will not believe your eyes! That was also a tip from the Hidden New Mexico book. Enjoy the most beautiful state in the nation (I am biased, I know)!

Worth the $ for adventurers that like off beaten track sites
Real information on what to do, geared more for the adventurer.Maps nothing special.Brief history coverage. No real prices, only "budget, moderate." Not a complete travel guide, but gives good ideas of what to do on the islands. Use this for some non-touristy sites and to do's, but buy more complete guide for hotels and car rentals, etc. Covers all islands, though not real detailed.

lots of math, not an introductory read
I own the second edition (1985) of this book. It contains eight chapters, covering multiple regression, multivariate ANOVA, canonical correlation, principal components analysis, and factor analysis. Derivations of several formulae are compiled in an appendix.

Heavy on the math, light on conceptual narrative. A good book for those wanting depth. Not so good for picking up and learning for the first time what factor analysis is.

Using Cointegration Analysis in Econmetric Modelling
The book is pretty average. The author explains relatively well unit roots and tests on whether they are present in time series or not. When it comes to cointegration the author explains well the Engle-Granger methodology and its caveats. He also explains a dynamic approach whic is superior in terms of less bias in equation estimation and inference. However when it comes to the systems approach developed by Johansen ( a VAR approach) the explanations get confusing when it comes to testing hyptoheses. By trying to simplify too much, there is a great risk the non-knowledgeable reader can get easily lost and discouraged.

Pop-Psychology for OD
Beckhard and Harris' book on organizational transition is easily one of the worst I have ever read on the subject. It is not necessarily the kind of information that is conveyed here, nor is it the style with which it is done. Rather, if you have even the slightest concept of the meaning of OD and related topics then your knowledge is perhaps well beyond the scope of this book. Though the book does represent a nice introduction to the management of change, it is hardly worth its price. It barely surpasses the quality of an average pop-psychology book but certainly is of little value to scholars.

OD Classic
This is one of the books that I've dog-eared, underlined, and referenced over and over, so much so that I'm on my second copy. It goes beyond the typical change management information, and gives valuable tools for assessing the readiness for change, identifying roles people assume in a change situation; charting responsibilities in a change process, among others. In my opinion, this isn't a book for scholars, it is a book for managers and those who help them plan and manage complex organization transitions.

Good overview of area but not enough detail
I was looking for more detail about the area. For instance, the hotel we chose was not listed. I had read that there was a place in the area where we could swim with the dolphins and that information was not listed in this book. If you are looking for general information this is a good book.
