The History of Sir Charles Grandison (The World's Classics)

Sir Charles Grandison
In this novel, Richardson presents the ideal male - the answer to what eighteenth century women and society (should) want. It is impossible not to be drawn to the character of Sir Charles and to root for the success of his affairs both worldly and personal.

Contains everything from world travel to duels, and presents all with gentle digs at the social conventions of a world that is, after all, not so different from our own.

INDISPENSABLE FOR ANY STUDENT OF AMERICAN LITERATURE
How quickly Americans forget. No one covers American literature with more knowledge, humor, insight and depth. This work is an American classic like the classics he covers: Moby Dick, Huckleberry Finn & The Scarlet Letter. I don't know how you get through graduate school without reading this work, the first in a trilogy. Fiedler's other two fine books being Waiting for the End, and The Return of the Vanishing American.

A standard text for cost accounting
If you are looking for a single volume "bible" on cost accounting, this is likely the best book in print today to fit that bill. It is comprehensive in scope yet has many strengths to ease comprehension and aid readability.

The topics are grouped in six main sections each with several chapters on that topic. Since it is unlikely that you will read this reference / text book left to right as you would a novel this organization helps in finding what you are looking for and focusing on the area(s) of interest.

There are many helpful illustrations and a good use of color as well as chapter summaries and all the exercises you could ever hope for.

A very excellent feature is the use of application problems that take you step-by-step through building an Excel spreadsheet. This is tremendously useful.

The web support is also a good help as well as the streaming video vignettes.

I honestly find this topic very interesting and the 11th edition of this book to be a very valuable resource.

Excellent Book
An easy to read and understand book characterized with the breadth of material and examples.

the best costing book
I've studied cost accounting for 2 years in Hong Kong. The first year I used a really bad text book named 'Costing', I hated studying Costing. However after using the 'Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis (10 Edition)', I become interested in Costing and Management Accounting. And deceide to have CMA exam in future. THIS BOOK IS REALLY GOOD ONE.

Excellent
Do we always choose people that remind us of our parents? An interesting look a marriage & friendship. And how the past does not have to dictate our present.

Very Real
Although a little lengthy, 'Chesapeake Song', is an excellent, honest story of love, heritage, and marriage. It depicts how your upbringing and adolescent environment capitulate many aspects of your adult life. This story will tug on your heart, and make you think. Read this book on a sunny day, at the park, under a tree, with a cool glass of lemonade.

A romtic family drama that will long be remembered
On the surface, Tamra and Charles Lane seem to be living the American lifestyle. They were childhood sweethearts in Maryland and in spite of different dreams for their future, are happily married. Yet after thirteen years of wedlock and having children, Tamra leaves her spouse, not an easy decision since she still loves him.

Tamra looks to her heritage to help her finalize her decision. She turns to her own mother Virginia who left her own spouse, a school administrator. Tamra also looks back at the family powerhouse her grandmother who kept everyone together while the world collapsed around their family. Still, Tamra needs to learn what she can from her immediate female antecedents while Charles struggles with why since he feels he has given her everything she wants.

CHESAPEAKE SONG is a well-written character study that centers on how the lessons of childhood impact the adult as family patterns and histories repeat itself in each generation. The story line employs flashbacks to provide insight into the relationship between Tamra's parents and the influence of her grandmother as well as how Tamra and Charles have reached a critical fork in the road. Though not paramount to the main theme, but an added bonus, the audience observes African-American relationships over the last four decades. Readers who want action need to go elsewhere, but anyone interested in family dynamics will enjoy the insightful debut of Brenda Lane Richardson.

Another Savannahian's opinion
I'm so glad that I chose to read this book before reading any of the book reviews that discussed its literary prose value. I fully admit to have lived in Savannah for the past ten years and probably read it for curiosity value moreso than desire to read another historical fiction. However, I had great difficulty putting this book down to work or sleep. I found the characters and plot most riveting. I found myself asking friends and co-workers that are native to Savannah about the events and descriptions of the town in earlier days, only to determine the extreme accuracy of depictions. I, too, will be awaiting the sequel eagerly.

An engrossing emotional story of a great city and its people
A great read ! An engrossing and fast moving story of family loyalties, ambitions, murders, and political and social intrigues set in and around Savannah (by a native Savannahian) with such a fascinating, moving and authentic presentation of the behavior, attitudes and reactions of its diverse people that the book is extremely difficult to put down until it is finished.

True friendship, family and faith......
Reading this book was a wonderful experience. On the historical side, the picture painted of Savannah was beautiful and enticing, full of the rich Southern and Irish-Catholic heritage that Savannah is so proud of. The families portrayed were full and in-depth studies of the individuals and their family heritage, good and bad. The novel begins with a unique bond between two good men, one a white Confederate soldier, the other a slave. The bond is friendship and trust. The novel traces family history in an intriguing plot involving serial murders, betrayal, greed and also love, brotherhood, trust and true faith. The families lives entertwine again and again through history. This novel was far different than what I had expected it to be about, but I can say I was not at all disappointed. I was very moved by the strong key role that the characters Faith in God and their relationship to the Catholic Faith played and how it was their strength and life saver in their many struggles with betrayal, disappointment, drugs, war and death. From the Civil War to Vietnam and beyond this was a wonderfully crafted novel. This is not the typical " Irish sad story", where when it's over you heave a big sigh and say Ahhhhhhhhhh! This is a wonderful tale of family, true love, and a rich Faith in a beautiful Southern setting.

Great ethics book - for more than engineers
This book is designed for engineers, but the book can apply to more than an engineer. I have taken an ethics course from two of the authors of this book. The cases presented in this book apply to real world situations(some altered slightly), not just some clearly fictional situations. There are many fundamental tools that help you determine the type of situation you are dealing with -- ex. moral, factual, conceptual. Afer the problem is determined there are tools to help you make decisions, such as creative middle ways. The author does not make you adhere to their ethics, but a general ethical standard. Overall, this book provides very good ways to determine and solve issues; case studies are also provided to give you an opportunity to "test" yourself.

Lively as ethics can be
This book is readable and yet comprehensive. It covers the key issues in a way that engages the reader - usually starting with a case and illustrating key points throughout with reference to cases and other "real world" matters. The accompanying CD has lots of additional cases as well as codes and other reference material.

Used this book for class
Great cases and studies exemplifying ethics in engineering.

great help to resident
As a resident, I frequently prepared journal clubs, where we have to carefully discuss and scrutinize studies. I gained some introduction from "Appleton and Lange's Review of Epidemiology and Biostatistics for the USMLE". But preparing for journal clubs was quite different. There are many of statistical and epidemiological terminology in each article, some I am familiar with, but others are confusing and new. In this very helpful "dictionary" I was able to find more than 95% of the terms with brief definition and good short explanation that successfully allowed me to soundly evaluate the studies and prepare an impressive brief, neat handouts. The great thing about this dictionary was its well organization and ease to find what you are looking for. My friends frequently borrowed when they have to prepare their journal clubs, and found it really helpful.
It is a dictionary; i.e., arranged alphabetically sequencing the terms, and if a term has more than one name, they mention them all, before the explanation.
I highly recommended to every resident, as it will not only will help during residency, but also surely during real life and practice, especially a with hundreds of "trials, studies" appears in medical journal daily.
I gave it four not five stars, because few explanation were rather short, despite informative, and lack of illustration and pictures, which may require you to use a regular textbook in Epidemiology, this happened maybe almost 1 from every 10 terms.

"The" dictionary of epidemiology
One of the major problems with studying the field of epidemiology is the inconsistency of terminology that is used. This is because the field is relatively young, is actively evolving and has developed from multiple other disciplines including the social sciences as well as the medical sciences and statistics. As a result, it can be both confusing and frustrating for the student. This dictionary is the "bible" of terminology for the fireld, in part because there is no other. This should be an absolute requirement for the shelf of every student in the field of epidemiology. Even experienced epidemiologists are encouraged to have a copy for reference purposes. The only caution is that a new edition is due out soon. It can only be better than the first edition. Get it.

Good for a start on detailing...
After having wandered through it a bit, this software seems to provide a good starting point for detailing. The interface is quite easy to use, and provides enough choices to make the results fairly accurate. The details that are provided form a good skeleton for devising more appropriate ones (if necessary). The only problem is that the details are completely exploded, so changing them can be tedious (i.e. altering dimensions or hatches), and depending on your office standards, there's a lot of layer work that may be done to get pen assignments and all of that done. So, at first glance it looks like a good tool for a starting point, and to provide 'place holders' for the information that's needed on the details... plus... easy to use and the graphical interface is nice.
