Smart Seniors Never Grow Old
An outstanding book that gives down to earth remedies for the various afflictions of aging. As an 80 year old person, I found the remedies really worked. I loved the stories of what happened in our society and in our food production from the Great Depression of the 30's to our current times. The stories were true and enjoyable. They brought back many memories. Every senior should read this book.

Frosty : A Raccoon to Remember

A ranger's experience with raising a raccoon.
This warm, humorous book contains the author's experience raising a rambunctious raccoon named Frosty who was brought to her after his family died in a storm. Frosty loves to explore and meet new people and this often gets him (and Harriet) into trouble. Eventually, they move to a citrus farm in California, where Frosty meets new friends, has new adventures, and eventually goes wild.

What a great book!
I read this book several times as a teenager and loved it every time. I have recently found out that my wife is pregnant and this is one of the first things that came to mind. I want to read this to my child. Of course it is out of print and is likely going to be difficult to find by I will keep my fingers crossed. This is a hilarious look at the misadventures of a very lovable young Racoon named Frosty. I have thought of this book so often over the years and would encourage even adults with a desire to belly roll laugh to buy and read this book where ever you can find it. Read it to your children and save it so they can do the same for theirs.

Animal-lovers' fun
Got this book at a library sale. I read it aloud with my ten year old, who is an animal lover. Frosty had us laughing so hard our sides hurt! What a personality! Harriet was the only woman park ranger at the Big Basin national park in California for twenty years. Her knowledge and love of wildlife and the redwood forests where she lived in the summers adds lots of authentic and colorful background. My daughter told my husband all about this baby raccoon who loved flushing the toilet and jumping in...to the point that his use of water caused a near disaster in the park! And wait'll you read about the time Harriet left him in the car for a minute and he got into her medicinal throat lozenges. "Mad 'coon!" After the crowd gathered, a truck loaded with chickens pulled up next to Harriet's car. Ever seen an explosion of chicken feathers? There are dozens of incredibly funny stories in this book. We now have a fascination with raccoons and an appreciation for them that we didn't have before. We laughed, cried, and bonded with Frosty and Harriet. I hope you find it; it is a treasure.

The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook

Great maps, frank reviews, needs editing
We just returned from Kauai and used this book as our guide. I'd strongly suggest purchasing this book if only for the maps, which are completely thorough and seemed very accurate! We followed their driving guide around the island and thought it to be an excellent way to "self narrate" our drive. The authors' frank reviews of the island's activities/companies were helpful in weeding out the bad ones, if not always in selecting the BEST one.

You'll read a lot about the good in other customer reviews -- I'd agree with much of what was written. What this book SUFFERS from is a good editor, both to curtail the authors' long-winded rambling and to make certain each of the sections are consistent in including key details. The restaurant section, for example, seemed sloppily put together, as some of the reviews excluded addresses/locations and other such details. Likewise, the guide to beaches omitted such useful facts as "the drive to Polihale State Park includes over four miles of dirt road" -- something I'm sure they assume you'd notice on their great maps, but all the same, some of their write-ups included such details, some did not.

We did follow their restaurant recommendations (about 10 of them, all told) and would advise you, the traveler, only to avoid BRENNECKE'S, whose "legendary Mai Tais" were the worst we had and the view was better than the food.

OVERALL ADVICE: 1) Purchase this book from Amazon.com, 2) go to your local bookstore and copy down restaurant ideas from Zagat's Hawaii, and 3) browse through the freebie magazines available all over Kauai for supplemental information.

Not the book for Ugly Americans
In reading through the customer reviews on here, I notice that the handful of people who gave this book 1 star complain about the restaurant reviews, or they say the people of Kauai aren't really as friendly as this book claims. I'd suspect these are the people who expect paradise to be without bugs, rain, or or anything else that might "inconvenience" them... the people whom the reviewer from Kapahi complained about (11/12/00). If you act like a snotty haole, people will treat you like one. If you're looking for five-star restaurants, you probably SHOULDN'T go to Kauai. That said, this book is great for those of us who want to be unobtrusive, low-budget travelers and eat plate lunches with the locals. The maps -- which include 3-D relief shading -- are by far the best non-urban maps I've ever seen printed in a travel guide. My only complaint (and the reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5) is that the Accommodations section is all about hotels and condos; there are only 5 B&Bs and 2 Vacation Rental Referral Services mentioned, and I didn't find either of those services to be as helpful as I'd hoped. (For better accommodation info, check out alternative-hawaii.com.)

The Bible Of Kauai
I reviewed a few guidebooks prior to my first visit to Kauai. This one blew them all away. Within a day, my sister and I were able to guide ourselves (for free!) around the entire island without any hitches. The maps are great, directions precise and pictures true.... We did what we call beach tours based on the reviews and directions to well-known and not-so-well-known beaches. Beautiful. We ate at some of the places recommended and agreed with the reviews of all but one (didn't like the mango glazed fish....) and another place had closed already. Perhaps we didn't have the latest edition or the business just didn't take. Nevertheless, if you are planning to go, get this book before you leave and make your plans. We discovered while at the least known places, especially the beaches, the only people there were the ones with this book in tow. Great for finding your own nirvana in this island paradise. I could go on for days, just get the book. You just can't go wrong

Great Read
What a wonderful, compelling story! This book could not be put down until the entire story was known. The emotions that this author must have endured during this trying time in her life must be shared with all. This great book is a must read and would make a wonderful movie.

Seven Months and Seven Days
This was obviously a difficult subject for the author to write about. This story shows her deep love for her family and the agony she witnessed during these very trying months. I think that the author captured some very sincere emotions during this book's writing. An outstanding first effort and who knows, this may become a movie one day.

Absolute Best Maui Guide Book!
We visited Maui in December of 2002 and found this book invaluable! The insider information and tips are terrific. The maps were extremely helpful and accurate. We especially appreciated the tip about the 'magic' show Warren and Annabelle's. We were sceptical about another dinner show, but after reading the author's review we bought tickets and it turned out to be the best activity we did on the island!

The authors give you a web site to visit with lots of reviews on hotels and activities. They personally do the activities and visit the venues without revealing that they will be publishing a review. They are not afraid the publish the good and the bad, which has some of the locals a little upset. But all the better for you!

If you're planning a trip to Maui, this is the only guide book you'll need! Aloha!

Great Guidebook for Families with Teens
Maui Revealed is an awesome book for families with older children. Our four kids ( 19,17,14 and 11) loved the adventures to find the "hidden treasures". Think your teenage son would never go for a day long drive to look at waterfalls and pretty views? (aka Hana Highway) Wait until you let him lead the way through a dark and dense bamboo forest, climb over a gate and barb wire fence or hop over a bridge, crawl down the embankment and wave to the "wimps" taking their pictures from the safety of the road! Many helpful hints about picture taking, great ( and not so great) eats, where to stay and places to avoid. If you are going to Maui and you want to see more than the typical tourist sights you must get this book!! BTW, heed the authors warning about the car window-smashing bandits....it happened to us at the Olivine Pools and the nice Maui police officer told us we were the fifth report he had taken that morning! We spend a day in Kauai with the authors' Kauai Revealed book and found it to be just as helpful. We only had 7 hours on that island and it really helped us to spend our time wisely. Thanks to the authors for helping our family make some wonderful memories that will last six lifetimes!!

More helpful than a local guide.
This book was incredible. I spent 6 weeks on the island, got back this week :( Anyway this book really made my trip, it allowed me to have the information to decide what is and what isn't worth seeing. 99% of the time I agreed with their reviews. The book really covers everything on the island, beaches, activities (scuba, fishing, hiking, etc.), adventures, restaraunts, accomadations, and other random sights. Also it is logically catogorized by the parts of the island, so if you are looking for something around you, you only need to sift through the relevent information. This book truly is a must. I often contemplated trying to find these authors to personally congratulate them. The only bad thing about this book is it's popularity, so all those secret spots on the island that you get too may also have other people holding this book. This happened to me a few times, but I couldn't blame other tourists for buying this book, I think everyone going to Maui should.
Another great aspect of this book is that it gives you real prices for all restaraunts and activities.

Nice Ideas, But The Inherent Flaws of CID's Are Glossed Over
As a victim of HOA (CID) bureacracy, I purchased this book in the hopes that it would give me some legal advice on how to fight back. Rather, the author espouses a home-spun philosophy of working within the system. If your HOA problem is rather trivial in nature (such as a dispute over whether or not you can have a clothesline in your backyard, for example), this book could be very helpful. It's basically a collection of anecdotes and situations taken from the author's own real-life experience (she's the president of her HOA), as well as those of others involved in HOAs. One of the biggest hurdles in attempting to make any changes in the HOA scenario is that, typically, bylaws mandate that a minimum 3/4 majority of homeowners (voters) must concur for any proposals to take effect or board members to be elected (or removed.) Greenwalt gives some practical suggestions on how to galvanize support and make changes in your HOA despite this 3/4 requirement. All fine and good, but for someone like myself (who has been gouged for over $5000 in fines and legal fees over an orginal debt of $500 in overdue association dues), it's too little too late. After reading the book Privatopia, which outlines the history of HOAs, and--more significantly--exposes the reasons why they exist and proliferate, I've come to realize that there is nothing about HOAs that is designed for the benefit of the homeowner. (Even the goal of maintaining property values--ostensibly the primary reason for HOAs in the first place--is in place to satisfy the demands of the lending institutions that finance the developments, not to protect the homeowner's investment) Ironically, the author does make a brief quote from Privatopia, so one would assume that she has read it. The knowledge that HOAs are here because they maximize the profits of developers with no concern for the homeowner doesn't seem to dampen the author's enthusiam in regard to the HOA lifestyle. (Nor do the multitude of horror stories contained in her book and Privatopia) If you're resigned to living in an HOA (or even LIKE it, which perhaps some do), then I would recommend this book. Personally, I plan to sell out someday and seek residence outside of what is essentially a privatized enclave of socialism.

Great, useful book!
Joni's book is great for new Board of Directors of HOA's. Her book is fun to read. But her book also taught me a lot about being a good Board member, searching for a new management (service) company, and establishing good policy for the community as a whole but also for the individuals who live here. Her book is also good for anyone who lives in a covenant-controlled community. Many thanks to Joni for taking time to write her book!!!

Attn: homeowners, buyers, and all others involved with HOAs
Finally we have a book about homeowners associations viewed from the inside - how homeowners experience living in common-interest communities. A major theme of the author is that a widespread feature of this form of housing, which is founded on binding covenants, is rigid and intrusive regulation of homeowners' use of their property - for which she provides abundant and lively case material. In equal measure, she offers both broad principles and specific methods which association boards of directors can apply to foster civility and fairness in these communities. A natural audience for this book are the people who live in or plan to buy homes in homeowners associations; but the practitioners who provide services to associations would do well to read this book to learn about association life from the vantage point of homeowners who live in them.

Canned Food Gourmet: The Pig-Campers Cookbook
Truth: couldn't find one single recipe worth copying before shipping the book back. Do you never really drift off into the wilderness beyond the point where your wide bottom is planted on the picnic table in plain view of your SUV? This is the book for you, and thanks. Wished I had not had to give this book the obligatory one star. On the other hand, it should work well to keep all readers out of the wilds and near the road. A blessing in disguise.

THE bible for outdoor cooking
I've had this book for several years. While preparing for an extended car camping trip, I pulled it out again and was once again amazed at the breadth of recipes. There are recipes, variations of recipes, ideas for recipes, tips, hints, "chef's secrets"--her wealth of ideas is practically awe-inspiring. It's a terrific book just for leafing through and getting ideas. At home, I strive for fresh ingredients and creative cooking; while camping, ease of preparation and ease of clean-up are my primary rules. There are recipes in this book that meet each of those situations, and more than a few that meet both. Sure, there are a few I'll never use (even while camping I can't quite bring myself to eat Spam), but overall there's no better resource. I've bought several other camping cookbooks recently, but this one retains its spot as my most treasured camping cookbook.

Buy It
Not only are these great recipes for camping, they're great quick recipes at home.

In addition to "one burner" meals, there are also good recipes for dutch oven cooking, preserved food (pemmican, jerky, trail mix), and make-aheads (cook before going).
