Excellent account of 1913 flood
I read this book many years ago when I was growing up in Dayton, Ohio. I had heard tales of the 1913 flood, but reading this book at the time made it all more real to me. Very well written, and quite descriptive with the sights and sounds and sometimes smells of the time leading up to and during the flood. Brought to life places that no longer existed when I was growing up, like the old Steele High School. A few years ago I stumbled upon an old copy at a library sale and snapped it up. I came home and reread it that night. Strongly recommended to history buffs and non-history buffs!

Promises in the Attic
This book is really good. Especially if you're from Dayton. Even if you're not! I read this book when i was in about the 6th grade. it's about a girl around 16 i believe that lives through the 1913 flood in dayton. it tells of the sights and sounds of the flood along with the girls fictional family and their experiences. includes daytonview, ncr, victoria theatre etc. it's a great book!

a book for all Filipinos and lovers of things Philippine
First of all, this is a sumptuously illustrated book. It is already worth what you pay for it in the illustrations. This is no wonder though because as the rest of the subtitle states, the book represents seven days in the Philippines with 35 of the world's finest photographers. Add to that well written text and you have truly excellent value in this book. My favourite section is the short Philippine history written by James Hamilton-Patterson. A thinking person's coffee table book.

Not just another royalty book
"The Royal 100: A Who's Who of the First 100 People in Line of Succession to the British Throne" combines a text by Alan Hamilton with many, many photographs. The book's subtitle pretty much describes it perfectly. The book is divided into five sections that reflect the genealogical interconnections of the British royal family. The sections cover the House of Windsor and its descendants; the Norwegian royal house (yes, one of them could inherit the British crown if some massive disaster wiped out all the Windsors and descendants); the Romanian royal family; the Yugoslavian royal family; and the Russian imperial family.

The interesting introduction has an overview of the British royal family and the principles of royal succession. The text overall is both informative and entertining. I loved the many pictures of the royals and their relatives: at work, at play, in formal looking poses, etc. There are wedding pics, baby pics, and pics of royals in the fancy military uniforms that seem to never go out of fashion. Mini-biographies (very brief for the more obscure individuals) accompany the pictures. Along the way are some marvelous images and curious (occasionally even scandalous!) facts.

This is definitely one of the most enjoyable of the many royal books I have read over the years. It's full of life. Unfortunately, the 1986 edition is (as I write this review) way out of date. But the book is still well worth exploring.

For Kids of All Ages
As a grown up reader, I must say that this book is truly enchanting. I enjoyed the reading, and the artwork was fantastic. Children of all ages will enjoy this work. The lessons on friendship taught by the author are exactly what children today need, and adults would not be hurt by the refresher course. Yes, it is a children's story, but aren't we all children at heart anyway?

History of Deruta Pottery
I puchased this book for my wife who brought home some pottery when she was in Umbria. I was hoping for a book that had a lot of pictures of the different kinds of Deruta pottery. This book was a history of the pottery from 1200-present. Although it was not what I thought, it was still very informative and enjoyable. I would recommend to anyone who wants to find out the history of this beautiful Italian pottery

A book that contains not only history but excellent pictures
This book is an excellent source of study, for the ones who want to know a little bit of the history of Deruta and its pottery tradition. For artists, it provides some wonderful pictures of many kinds of pottery in bright colours. The publishing quality is also very good.

Bellisimo!
This is a beautiful book! I highly recommend it to anyone enchanted by Italian majolica and interested in it's history. After I read it, I thought I'd leave it on my coffee table for easy reference...but so many people at work have asked to borrow it! Even as I rode the train to work with the book in my lap, people next to me couldn't resist staring at the pictures and commenting on its beauty.

A true satire
This book is satiracal about so many 18th cent. issues including women's education, christianity, and british foriegn policy. It is a hard book to follow with a bunch of characters that are only in the book briefly. It is very funny and the country mouse in the city effect is very well done. Hamilton took this character and really breathed life into him. The only draw back would be the number of characters that appear briefly for very little effect throughout the novel.

Have a beverage close by!
This book is required for one of my classes. It is dry. The print is too small, there is so much content that it is a ton of tedious reading. The notes at the ends of the chapters are good though.. you can get most of what you need to know from them. After the first several chapters, I found that I could read the 2 review sections at the end of each chapter and go read the chapter content for anything I didn't understand.

If you need a lot of protracted explanation on topics, then this book may suit your needs well. I found my self thinking, "enough already"! Yawn!!

Review of Learning and Instruction Book
This book is a collection of information about learning including classical and operant conditioning, information processing theory, Piagetian theory, cognitive development, motivation, and social learning theory. It not only discusses the theory but gives you practical applications for leading a classroom. While there is more emphasis on teaching children, there is a good amount about adult learning as well. It is well written in understandable English. In short, it's a book worth reading!

Fluff only
You can't call it a detective mystery because no detecting actually happens. You can't call it a mystery because the clues don't add up. You can't call it suspense thriller because the third act is all conjecture. You can't call it characher developement because, while some of the secondaries can grow, it ends before they do.
Nice light reading if you're not looking for any story.
