Darling book
Very good book for Parents and kids. There is so much beauty around us it's a shame we take it for granted so often.Myself being born in the country and residing in the city, this book sure made me homesick! :o) Gentle Breezes, Cinnamon

Should be required reading for children
This book describes the author's nighttime walks with her children during each of a year's thirteen full moons. Through these chapters the reader experiences the thrill and awe of moonlit discoveries. Reading this book to children is a wonderful way to introduce them to nature. Most children and parents who read this book will want to follow its example, and both will benefit if they do. It would be an excellent resource for elementary school teachers. Very well written and illustrated.

Excellent walk through nature for children and parents
Sharing the joys of nature between parents and children is a rare topic. This book is a simple, yet joyful, description of a parent's decision that bedtime doesn't always take precedence over discovering nature.

My mother read this to me while we were living on a farm in southwestern Wisconsin, where this book is set, which made the stories even more important to me.

A wonderful bedtime story for any child longing to see the natural world at night.

Fran Hamerstrom: a peer to Rachel Carson
This beatifully written biography describes the early life and career of wildlife biologist Frances Hamerstrom, the first female graduate student of Aldo Leopold (author of A Sand County Almanac) and pioneer in the field of wildlife biology. Hamerstrom's account describes her upbringing in Boston in the early 1900's, her marriage to Frederick Hamerstrom and their joint careers as graduate students, and wildlife biologists in Wisconsin. Filled with humor, you will laugh to read of her transition as a teenager in Brookline sneaking out to go ballroom dancing to that of a dedicated biologist. Even the biology will make you laugh as she describes trying to capture a hawk by getting it to land on a fencepost-- and 'decorating' the rest of the fenceposts with bouquets of goldenrod to make them un-land-upon-able. A great read!

Entertaining and historically interesting
Each chapter is a short story on things a woman hunter had to endure (from her male counterparts) in the 1930s and 40s. The tales are amusing and often very funny. Fran frequently had to prove she was as good as the men, and sometimes outdid them. An extreme example: at a game farm men were trying to spear rats that were eating the birds' feed. With her bare hands Fran caught and killed more rats than all the men. Most stories are much more tame; e.g., duck and sharptail grouse hunting. If your female partner reads this before she hunts, you might assure her things aren't quite so bad in the 90s. Not quite. Fran Hamerstrom went on to become a world famous biologist who studied grouse, prairie chickens, hawks, owls, and eagles.
