The book was absolutely fabulous! It was as if the reader had been invited to take part in the michigan farm. It was heart-wrenching, yet funny at times. It made me remember that I'm a farm-boy at heart!

Nostalgic look at our childhood memories.
Donald Hall had taken me by the hand and walked me up the runway into the Polo Grounds for my first baseball game all over again. His recap from the drive to the ballpark, the surroundings, the weather right to the clothes he wore made me feel like it was 1962. This is a must read for a father of a young boy who is just starting to attend sporting events. The stories brought a tingle to my spine and a tear to my eye. I relived watching Larry Jackson beat my Mets and remembered getting my first autograph by Sandy Koufax. Being 42 didn't matter anymore, I felt like I was 6 years old again and seeing the greenest grass I had ever witnessed albeit at such a young age and growing up in New York City. It is a book you read to your son at bedtime and you hope he never falls asleep so you can keep reading.

My kids love this book year-round
Starting with the beginning of school in the fall, this wonderful book based on the life of the author's grandmother, take us through a rural family preparing for the celebration of Christmas in simple ways - making presents from scraps of fabric and sheep's wool saved through the year; rehearsal for the Christmas play with homemade costumes, and a surprise gift for the daughter who is so enthralled with the new cast iron stove in the kitchen. My girls (3 and 5) ask to have this read year-round. In an age of such materialism, this is a welcome story of a simpler life. The woodcut prints are just the right accompaniment to this story.

Musical Acoustics
Published in Hardcover by Brooks Cole (November, 1991)
Author: Donald E. Hall
Amazon base price: $117.95
Used price: $9.95
Average review score:

Fascinating
This book is a thorough overview of physics behind music. In the first part of the book, Hall lays the foundation with an investigation into waves, sound propagation, sound measurement, and the human ear. The middle third of the book takes up families of instruments, and how they work to create musical sounds. The last part of the book investigates room acoustics, sound reproduction, and the perception of intervals, tunings, and musical structure. Each chapter includes references and suggestions for further reading, numerous mathematical exercises for practicing the concepts covered in the chapter, and a list of potential projects for further investigation. The book includes a glossary and answers to selected problems, as well as an index.

I read quite a few textbooks for work and occasionally just for interest's sake, but this one really stands out. After reading the first few chapters, I found myself wishing I could sit in on Hall's lectures. His style is intensely personal, and his explanations are incredibly clear. I'll admit that sometimes my eyes glossed over while slogging through some of the numbers and charts, but it was mainly my fault for not being a more active reader. In order to get the most from this book, you really need to read it with calculator in hand, or better yet, an Excel spreadsheet open, ready to try out the numbers and scenarios that Hall provides us with. Nevertheless, the math is kept quite simple- -no calculus; if you can do algebra, you should be able to get through the book.

I've found the information in the book to be quite useful. Hall's description of how resonance works in drums has helped me make sense of my tabla teacher's pickiness about where my fingers strike the tabla heads. And at last I understand the physics behind why some rooms in my house are acoustically dead, and others are alive. Hall has opened up a new world of ideas for me, and I will be thinking them through for years to come. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how music really works.

An Old Passion (G.K. Hall Large Print Book)

An Old Passion
It is an old passion. Once scorched by the intense passion she felt for Blase, Merrin is apprehensive of seeing him again. The story oscillates between the haunting memories of the past and turbulent emotions of the present. All in all, An Old Passion is a sensual and sensitive story that tugs at your heart. It makes for a very good and memorable reading. As a reader, I can return to this book again. For me, I wholeheartedly recommend any book which beckons me to reread it later because I found just too many romance books which I forgot about as soon as I finished reading them.

Stunning
Hall takes a single thread, aging, and observes it from all angles, male, female, depression, esctasy, violence, anger and happiness. Man is compared with history, nature and Greek tragedy. But don't get put off by the grande themes, this is a very readeable and enjoyable book for anyone who likes to read.

bisexual ppl can do some...theory!
Okay, I admit it: I'm a gay man that often talks...about bisexuals. But strong bisexual activists and bisexual anthologies have made me mend my ways (or at least constantly keep trying). Plenty of anthologies have proven that bisexuals can write compelling biography and cultural criticism. But here is a unique book where bisexuals show they can go toe to toe with high-level (...) theory. This anthology was very diverse in terms of gender and race. It covers areas such as Freud's Dora, E. Lynn Harris novels, and Jane Bowles. I would really recommend this book for many a bisexual theoryhead. This book will make monosexual theorists do more to appreciate their bisexual peers.

Five Stars Not Enough
The fact that this book is out of print is one of the great travesties in American publishing. Donal Hall is perhaps the last living connection we have to the golden era of early 20th century poetry. Here you will find firsthand accounts of his contact with giants like TS Eliot, Dylan Thomas, Ezra Pound, Robert Frost, and Yvor Winters.

Hall's prose is so delightfully engaging, and these profiles go far beyond literary namedropping. In fact, [Remembering Poets] should be required reading for any graduate or post-graduate English scholar. Of all of this writer's many accomplishments, this book certainly ranks near the top.
