Neuroradiology: The Requisites
Published in Hardcover by Mosby (29 August, 2003)
Authors: Robert I. Grossman and David M. Yousem
Amazon base price: $95.00

Good effort
This is a very, very good book. The text is clear and uncluttered. The tone is light - the authors have tried to write a book that is enjoyable to read, not just informative. Good pictures, though some of them can be improved by enlargement.

Two negatives:
1. The price is steep. I agree with the reviewer below - most users will be residents and med students, who can ill afford paying so much for an "essentials" text.

2. A new edition is desperately due - it is more than 7 years since the first was published. The new edition was supposed to be out in 2000. When it couldn't be brought out, Mosby promised that it'd be out in December 2001. Now even that deadline has been passed, and Mosby 'promises', yet again, that it will be out May 2002. I hope it is.

Authors, thank you
The authors want to transmit their knowledge to the reader. They are real teachers, as all textbook authors should be. Their aim is to help us learn neuroradiology and not just enrich their CV like many others do. Congratulations and thank you!

Don't Leave Home Without It
As Director of Neuroradiology at a Harvard teaching hospital for many years, I have been responsible for recommending texts for residents to begin their study of my subspecialty. When this book was first published, it happened to be the year in which our subspecialty offered its own examination for certification. Because I was interested in finding a text to provide a current survey of the field, I bought this book. Little did I know how comprehensive this text was- a true "bang for the buck". The coverage of the field, including neck imaging, is remarkably thorough and up-to-date, considering the current edition is 6 years old.

The only minor deficiency is a paucity of illustrations, but I believe a pictorial work book keyed and correlated to this text has now been published.

What makes this text unique is the authors' wry sense of humor, with "zingers" appearing unexpectedly- they literally wake you up and provide encouragement to finish even the most challenging chapters. The final sections, which include a unique chapter on how to interpret MR and CT images, as well as lists of differential diagnoses, are real gems.

In summary- as Karl Malden said- "Don't Leave Home Without It". The book is small enough to carry, and a valuable resource from which to learn while one works in the radiology reading room.

Faces of the conflict
David Grossman manages to do the seemingly impossible as he humanizes the conflict between the Jews and Arabs in Israel. An outstanding picture is drawn that shows the humanity of the conflict, both the ugly and beauty involved without any bias. A brief historical perspective is included to help further illustrate the ongoing problem. Grossman interviews and paraphrases his discussions along the way of his journey, seeking the truth without politicians interference from either side. The stories are for the most part heartbreaking, as Grossman explores and tells his revealed stories of the never ending conflict. Although written "early" on in the conflict, the issues and people are the same. Palestinians dispossesed, turned to bitter anger, further escalated by a Jewish authority that tries to mantain some order between the now, old adversaries. The book is insightful and unfortunatly prophetic of the current situation that now calls for a murder by one side in retaliation for another murder. The cycle is unending, the faces on the news all to real and Grossman revealed the faces long ago. He traveled throughout the country to gather the stories of those most affected by war. He talks to old and young alike as they complain and show their disdain, their fears and their little hope for a workable solution. The books raises many questions, often going deeper than the conflict itself, obviously there are no easy solutions. The cruely inflicted upon each group is part of the problem but the roots of the conflict date back to the partioning of the land and the changing landscape of the geography and it's inhabitants. This book is a very worthwhile read that is a fast page turner. Highly recommended for those interested in the conflict of the Middle East that seems to be the fuse of the powder keg.

A Great Contribution to Historiography
An excellent read, and certainly the least biased book on the subject I've ever read. I was introduced to this book while reading a passage in THE OTHER ISRAEL written by Assaf Oron, a Sergeant Major in the Israeli Defense Force Reserves. Assaf is one of the reservists who has refused to serve in the occupied territories after years of serving there.

In THE OTHER ISRAEL, Assaf wrote, "A copy of THE YELLOW WIND..., which had just come out, crossed my path. I read it, and suddenly it hit me. I finally understood what I had done over there [in the occupied territories]. What I had BEEN over there."

This powerful passage taken in context moved me to buy and read the book that moved a soldier to completely change his outlook on the conflict, and I am so fortunate I did.

Grossman's book is written from a uniquely humanist point of view in regard to what life is like for both Palestinians and Israeli citizens since 1967.

He spent 7 weeks in the occupied territories, both in the camps and in the settlements to make a genuine attempt to see the immediate world around him through the Palestinian and Gush Emunim settlers' eyes.

This book does not bog down with the intricacies and interpretations of various peace agreements, nor does it bother to delve into the well-known positions held by political leaders on both sides as so many other books on the subject do. Rather, Grossman focusses entirely on those who are most affected by the situation in the region: the people.

The book was written originally in 1988, and has an afterward by the author written in April 2002. As Grossman says in his afterward, "Nothing has changed." This book is as fresh and revealing today as it was 15 years ago. I really gained a lot by reading this book. You will too.

A true masterpiece
David Grossman's "Yellow Wind" is superb with a richness and texture to his writing that is honesta nd sincere. Grossman was highly criticized for providing the Palestinian story but when one reads this text, it is all sides that he lies within and one can hear the injustices of both the Israeli and the Palestinian.
I think this text is wonderful and easy to read!

Thoughts of a parent
As the parent of a 2 year old boy, this book has given me pause. I've long thought that the violence that children are exposed to both in real life, and on TV, the movies, and now with video games has to have some affect on them.

Certainly, not all children will become killers or violent towards others, but how many Columbine's or Jonesboro's do we need before we take action?

Some would say that guns is the reason for these school killings. The problem with that reasoning is that guns have always been around, yet it's only within the past 20 years that these types of killings have been happening. What's the difference between then and now? Just as the book makes clear: the violence that our children are exposed to has increased dramatically.

Many of the video games that our children are using are, as the book points out, nothing more than "killing simulators". They teach our kids how to kill. They watch tv shows full of violence. They see people get shot and not die. They see humor being used with violent acts. They see people who might otherwise have qualities of a role model, involved in violence towards others, and quite often get away with it.

I believe this book gets to the heart of the matter with regards to why our children are becoming more violent. Children aren't born violent....it's a learned behavior. If you have children, or simply care about the future of our children, you owe it to yourself and them to read this book.

It's time to wake up fellow humans
After reading this book and Col. Grossman's "On Killing", as well as attending several lectures put on by Col. Grossman I can only say....Wake Up ! The authors are not trying to destroy the Constitution, they are not after the video game industry, they are trying to show us the major reason violence among an entire generation and future generations is so high. Read all the information and studies from around the planet and you will understand better what they are trying to say. For those of you who don't want to believe....well you probably think that tabacco products don't kill apx. 400,000 Americans every year via a slow, hideous death. Remember....tabacco(via second hand smoke)like media violence kills innocent bystanders as well as primary users. Many of the media's Giants have gone on record admitting their medium is a contributing factor in a major way. However certain groups have denied their games, music, or violent movies have anything to do with the problem. This sounds like the tabacco industry to me. This book tells the truth...the problem is ....some of you just can't handle the truth. Wake Up America.

Wake up, America!
I am a U.S. Army officer, an infantryman and combat veteran with more than 16 years of service. I'm also completing a Masters in Secondary Education and have recently conducted my student teaching in a large public high school in the suburbs of Washington, DC. From this perspective, I read both of Dave Grossman's books, "On Killing" and "Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill." They are excellent and exceptional. I believe they are exceptional in that they stand for a well-researched voice of reason that explains the negative impact of the all-pervasive violent media in the lives of Americans. The "entertainment" industry is making a killing, if you will forgive the deadly pun - but it is on target, on selling violent TV shows, films and video games. Those who make their six-figure (and more) salaries selling death and destruction to children and teens do not want you to read these books. And that is precisely why you should. Most who would dismiss Grossman and Gloria Degaetano's findings in "Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill," likely have not read the book and / or profit from selling violence - or have become immersed in our violence-saturated media culture to the point they can no longer tell good from evil. I recently returned from being overseas for over four years and was shocked at how much more graphic the violent images in our media had become. The American public fits the analogy of the frog and the boiling water - thrown into boiling water, the frog jumps out. Placed in cool water that is brought to a boil, the frog is cooked. Our entertainment industry, realizes that violence is compelling, that it sells. Bit by bit they raised the levels of violence in American entertainment until they boiled us. We have been had, and most of us don't even know it. The blood of children in school yards is on the hands of those that make, sell, and distribute violent media. You have a duty as a citizen to know the issues. Get educated. Get involved. Get this book.

Good Book, Bad CD.. You got idea but you can't do it!!
New Raiders have problem with Flash MX Magic and now there are some problem with Photoshop 7 Magic, too.

Photoshop 7 Magic also have CD problem, I can't open picture in Project1 Folder. So, I can't Follow the book. Further more, Most of all folder contain only Start File.. no psd, no finish file there are only TIF file without layer! oh dear Sherry London, I'm not professional like you but I need some PSD file to see each Layer because sometime I can't follow your instruction. (as I see, 3 folders have finish file.. it's a big mistake)

in page 47 of this book, Phill Williams say only use Retouching tool to move object in TIFF file to other place (this is like a photo retouching) but they give me only 2 picture in that page .. just only original image and finish image.. there are no clue to point me out where I have to rubber stamp nor start to clone! and it's very small .. I do not understand why they left space behind. Maybe this is a MAGIC! So, it's very hard to understand. I need more picture and bigger! I do not know why her left space away like this .. :(

Worst ever, NO FONT!! but in book say include in cd, (lier) .. and many many error i.e. wrong folder name (I read only 3 projects but I found 4 or 5 errors!! it's too much!) and wrong picture in project 4!! you can download fix file from newriders website but it doesn't help anything! because errata still have error itself!! oh no.

Only a few better left is good tech support! but it's useless because this book is .... ok, I can say only don't purchase this book until next edition of this title came out! or try by yourself :) or purchase Photoshop 7 Wow! book instead!

Book Review
A plethora of new books are arriving on bookshelves thanks to Adobe releasing version 7 of Photoshop, and Photoshop 7 Magic by Sherry London and Rhoda Grossman from New Riders is one of the latest.

I have been using Photoshop 7 for a few months now (and had used a beta version, Liquid Sky, for a few months before that) so I am pretty comfortable with the new version. I was hoping Photoshop 7 Magic would teach me something new, something I did not know I could do with the new version of the program. Alas, that is not what this book is about.

Starting off with some very simple ways to use text, layers, and transparencies, the book moves into many different categories of Photoshop, from Marbled Backgrounds to Satin Beveled Type. The book is broken out into three main segments, Artistic Techniques, Web Techniques, and Image Manipulation Techniques.

The book features some really nice artwork and the accompanying CD-ROM has all the files you need to re-create the projects done in the book.

The book is well written, if somewhat Spartan. There is no sense of who the people are writing the book. It is "I did this, then I did that, etc..." With all the white space in this book, I would have liked to see a little more of the personalities of the writers come through. As it is, it is a boring read. Photoshop 7 Magic is a textbook, not an entertaining read. With the great pictures and examples in this book, it could have been so much more. Perhaps Sherry and Rhoda should take a page from another New Rider writer, Scott Kelby, and liven their work up a bit.

This book is geared to new Photoshop users, or graphic designers just now making the switch from brush and canvas to mouse, stylus pen, and monitor. Experienced graphic artists who have been using Photoshop for a few years will get little from this book they do not already know, or have learned from the countless book already available on the subjects covered in this book. Add to that and the very hefty price tag of the book, a whopping forty-five bucks, and I cannot recommend this book unless you are really lacking in Photoshop skills, unlike the demographic this book seems to be catering to.

Average book at best. Nice paperstock and heft to the book, but price is way too much for the quality of the 275 pages of actual content. The only Magic here is watching [money] disappear from your wallet or purse.

MacMice Rating: 3 out of 5

Five Big Ones!
With hundreds of choices out there for the category, this one stands out. Photoshop 7 Magic really enhances the possibilities of the tool. As a user, I want a text that's simple to read and NOT overwritten. Just show me how to do it! I'm a painter who found the chapter on brush techniques and liquid painting to be very helpful. You'll want this book on your shelf.

Sleeping on a Wire

A rarely-heard perspective
This book offers a different perspective on the Arab/Jewish conflict; that is, the perspective of the Arabs who live in Israel and are, in most cases, Israeli citizens.

Each chapter in the book is a "conversation" between the author and different persons (or groups of people). Through it, you see THEIR views of the "Palestinian problem," and it raises some issues that many people don't often consider. (For instance, if another "Palestinian state" is formed, what will the Israeli Arabs do? Leave Israel? Stay?)

Overall, this is a good book. I'd recommend it for anyone wanting to understand the Middle East conflict. I would have given the book 4 or maybe even 5 stars, were it not for the PG-13 language that should have been toned down here and there.

Fresh and Sensitive View of An Old Feud
David Grossman is an eminent -- if not the best -- current writer in the Hebrew language. In the present book he sets to explore the problems of Palestinians who are citizens of Israel, usually a lesser known aspect of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to people living outside the region. Written in the form of conversations with ordinary Israeli-Arabs intertwined with his perceptive and honest reflections as an Israeli Jew, the book gives a sensitive and fresh view of the issue and an alternative to trite journalistic reporting. Although he paints a picture which may be discouraging, Grossman carefully outlines an optimistic path for a better future.

Boring, pointless, and pretentious
I read this to review it for a print publication. I kept wondering why the translators bothered to put it into English and why the publishers felt that it was worth the sacrifice of trees. I think it may have value as aversive therapy for compulsive readers.

If you like Proust
I've not read any Grossman before and I dislike much contemporary fiction. This book's not for everyone. But if you can get into the story of Albertine in Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu, then you can handle the intensity and intricacy (subtlety within overstatement) of BE MY KNIFE. The book never refers, I think, to computer communications, but the setup whereby an entire affair is conducted through the written word strongly suggests an online relationship. There is psychological depth here (as well as art) that superficial readers simply may not want...and (as in Proust) a lack of plot. I recommend it, however, for sheer emotional catharsis. The ending's problematic. There could not be any simple end to the emotions portrayed.

This seems something new
This is one of the toughest books I have ever read, but it seems to be important. The form is unusual - the first person character has a correspondence with a woman he saw at a school reunion. They agree never to meet, but to be completely frank in their letters. For the first 225 pages we read only one side of the correspondence, the man's. Another section contains the diary of the woman. The third section is murky - their thoughts merge, and they may or may not actually meet and interact together. It seems to be about people who are detached from their own feelings as well as estranged from others, even those closest to them. The man may be trying not to be like his father, but still ends up being as cruel and controlling to his own son. All of my conjectures are conditional, as some of the action is unclear, yet I found the book haunting and thought-provoking.
