A Rich Potpourri of B Movie Madness
28 interviews ranging from John Agar to Mel Welles, with a very well done index to boot. Indeed, I find browsing the index great fun, as many favorites are touched on during the interveiws (ex: Jerry Warren's memories of Bruno Ve Sota and Harry Thomas' stories of Tor Johnson.) If you are a B Monster Movie fan, this is a must.

Mind Bogiling Space Art
This book is one that as you look through the pages, you realize that this art work is so fantastic that it almost makes you think it is real. I myself love the book, as my mind wanders in the possibility that these space craft may really exist somewhere. I definetly recomend this book to the Sci-Fi fan alike.

A unique view of the nineteenth-century American West
The collaborative effort of Michael J. Gillis and Michael F. Maglian, John Bidwell And California: The Life And Writings Of A Pioneer 1841-1900 is an informative biography that draws upon pioneer John Bidwell's own writings about the time he lived in (which included the Gold Rush years), the history of the state of California, and a great deal more. Occasional black-and-white illustrations enhance this scholarly account, offering a unique view of the nineteenth-century American West through the eyes of a man who called it home. John Bidwell And California is a welcome and valued addition to Western American Frontier Studies reading lists in general and California History reference collections in particular.

The Dramatic Chronicles Of Our 35th President
I recently read the book John F. Kennedy-President Of The New Frontier. I thought that this book was well-written. It provided a lot of information on the history of our 35th President John F. Kennedy. I learned a lot of interesting things about J.F.K. that I never knew before. One thing I learned was that Kennedy was involved in World War II. He was in the navy and worked as a commander of the ship PT 109 in the Pacific. He was also decorated for his many acts of bravery after the PT 109 sank. Another interesting accomplishment of Kennedy was that he published a book titled Profiles In Courage which won him a Pulitzer Prize. It was very depressing to hear of the tragedies that Kennedy and his family faced during their lives, such as the deaths of Joseph Kennedy, Jr., who was killed in a plane explosion and Kathleen Kennedy, who was killed in a plane crash in France. Another personal tragedy was the death of his newborn son Patrick Kennedy. I thought that the information provided that lead up to the events of John F. Kennedy's death were very informative. This book shows how Jacqueline Kennedy exhibited a lot of courage as she was about to face the world alone as a mother with children to raise without a father. I found Michael D. Cole's writing-style excellent and easy to read. One event flowed into the other, holding interest all the way to the end of this book. If you want to learn about the life of John F. Kennedy as Cole takes you through a step-by-step journey, I recommend that you consider reading this book sometime.

A great study of a great man
When Edgar Allen Poe died in Baltimore in l849, John G. Morris was already one of that city's prominent men. His "Lutherville Female Seminary," a pioneer educational insitution in this country exclusively for women, was to open just five years later.. As the Civil War loomed on the horizon, Morris was a Union man in a Southern city. He used to run to the train station to wave flags and shout "Hurrah" at Union troops passing through Maryland . A Lutheran Pastor and much more, Morris helped found Baltimore's world famous Peabody Institute and achieved world class recognition as an entomologist. Like many l9th century clergymen, he saw himself as a shaper of culture and destiny for his country and his city. His relationship with the Smithsonian Institute in Washington was just one of his many cultural and patriotic achievements. If "What is Past is Prologue," Dr. Kurtz has given us a valuable insight into 21st century America in his well-written biography of John G. Morris.

A superb introductory John Quincy Admas juvenile biography
The Profiles of the Presidents series is a superb collection of introductory juvenile biographies for young students, which I think is around the halfway mark in terms of covering everyone from Washington to Bush the Younger. Ironically, it is because of the current resident of the White House that John Quincy Adams has received more attention in recent years. After all, the parallels are extraordinary: both men are the only sons of Presidents to be elected to the office, they both have the same first name but different middle names, and they both lost the popular vote in their first election. Will the parallel continue in 2004? Well, no: because while every other President who was elected with less of the popular vote lost their bid for re-election they both (John Quincy Adams and Benjamin Harrison) lost in rematches with the opponents who won the popular vote (Andrew Jackson and Grover Cleveland) and that is not going to happen this time because Al Gore did "Saturday Night Live" and disappeared into the sunset.

Michael Burgan begins this book by establishing the idea that the story of John Quincy Adams is that of "A Lifetime of Service." Where Adams is most unique is that there he continued to serve his country after his four difficult years in the White House, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives and becoming known as "Old Man Eloquent" for his attacks on slavery (touched on in Steven Spielberg's film "Amistad"). Burgan deals with the problems of being the son of a President but also goes into detail on the extraordinary diplomat career both abroad and at home. The end result is the inevitable conclusion that even if he had not been elected President the life and political career of John Quincy Adams should be remembered.

In addition to the concise but detailed biography, this volume is profusely illustrated with historic etchings, paintings, and maps. Even when the illustrations are black & white they often end up with colored frames, showing the premium placed by the editors on having an eye-catching book. In the back of the book you will find a glossary, fast facts about Adams, a parallel timeline of world and presidential events, extensive resources to help young students better understand the life and times of this particular president, and a decent index. The Profiles of the Presidents series is excellent and Michael Burgan's look at "John Quincy Adams" is one of the best to date.

Joy Is Not My Profession

One of the unknown greats of world literature
The producer of a scant but very important selection of profoundly humanistic and moving works, including poetry, prose and theater, Muhammad al-Maghut is one of the unknown greats of world literature, an often forgotten figure today even in his native Syria. This book is a welcome, although hard to get, introduction to the work of this great man who should be better known everywhere, especially in the west with its tendentious and shallow understanding of the Arabs and Arab intellectual life.

Sympathetic Dryden
Highly engaging and emminently readable; almost a mini-resource for the non-scholar; and a true page-turner for the Drydenophile. I originally found this book at Amazon.com by performing a subject search, and lately it has received review attention in the scholarly journals. Thanks Amazon for the first notice! Mr Gelber has brought all phases of Mr Dryden's personal and literary biography vividly to life. Although both the scholarship and detail are immediate and wide-ranging, I was most pleased by Mr Gelber's justifiably genuine and unreservedly sympathetic view of his subject. Mr Dryden's reputation has been too much subject to petty carping and unjustifiable criticsm among scholars, whose views of this great man are sometimes both vicious and pernicious. Certainly the Father of Modern Literary Criticism deserves enduring and universal respect and esteem. He has received suitably respectful and sympathetic treatment from Mr Gelber; and I enjoyed having a favorite of mine so well praised. Thank you Mr Gelber; and I wish your book was lengthier; the last page made me wish for more!

Justice in the Church: Gender and Participation (Michael J. McGivney Lectures of the John Paul II Institute for Studies on mArriage and Family, 1992)

Excellent study of the role of women and men in the Church!
Fr.Ashley has produced a well-documented and thoughtful book on the roles of men and women in the church, discussing what true justice is, what participation in the life and happenings of the Church really means, and defenses for the prohibition of women to the sacrament of Holy Orders. Clearly, he has taken this issue very seriously and has done considerbale research in the area. The bibliography alone is amazing. While the work presents the reader with familiar issues, he explores a few new dimensions and contributes what I feel to be a significant aspect of gender and participation in the Church, namely the subject of what it means to be an active, "participating" member of the Church as a man or woman and the necessity of maintaining fidelity and "justice" to God's plan for the Church. Very interesting and worthwhile!

Finally - an original old source for Irish Families
I'd been looking for some of the old topographical descriptions of families in Ireland - they are often referred to but never given completely in any work. This one has the old writings on where our families were, and the old genealogies from ancient times - if you are serious about Irish history - you will be delighted at this choice piece.
