Sticking it to the eighties
Fans of the intelligent postmodern comic strip "Zippy" will revel in this collection from the eighties. Griffith's critical wit is sharp as always, the artwork is fabulous, and Zippy is his usual obscure self.

A Blast from the Zippy Archives
This large trade paperback collection collects some of the earliest Zippy strips and brings us thru the mid-1980's. It's amazing, considering the topical nature of much of the material, how well this stuff holds up! But the originality of Bill Griffith's characters and their media-crazed obsessions are timeless...

(We also get to see Griffy's hairstyle dramatically transform!)

From my experience, I must add that Zippy is an addictive pleasure, so be careful...

WE ARE HAVING FUN!
ZIPPY is the best thing on the comic's page today! Ever since the demise of BLOOM COUNTY/OUTLAND, there was an absence of totally original, crazy, funny and just plain undescribable strips. ZIPPY fills that void and creates its own special world that a LOT of people hate (because they don't "get" it) but, thankfully, some folks do get it and love it and cherish it and can't live without it, etc., you get the idea. I'm taking my copy and going to the diner to read it with Bob and Bert.

Greetings from This Modern World

this title dated, but...
I love Tom Tomorrows's THIS MODERN WORLD, read it avidly in the local alternative press, and so was delighted to find a copy of this particular title at our local public
library.

These cartoons are a bit old now...circa the Gulf War & aftermath. But they're still quite funny...We need Tom's
insights now more than ever with the war-hysteria that is
once again gripping our nation (the Gulf War segments in
this collection take on an eerie ring of familiarity in
recent days).

I've kept up with Tom's latest cartoons and he hasn't
missed a beat. Thank you Tom!

Ultimate Modern Satire
For anyone sick of anything in this modern world that we live in, prepare to be entertained.

Tom Tomorrow writes his comic with a well-crafted wit that is for anyone who is tired of the misguided politics and organizations of America. It will make you laught, cry, and wince as you come to realize the pathetic and scary state of our United States, and will inspire you to make a change.

brave post-postmodern satire of the funniest stripe
Tom Tommorow is a true rebel--unlike most of today's hipsters and ironists, he has the guts to stand for something and stay committed to"outmoded" ideas like peace and social justice while holding on to a damn good sense of humor and an eye for the truly absurd(aka the rich and powerful). His honesty, wit, and, yes, stridency puts him a few notches above any other cartoonist I've seen. Buy the book and you'll look at the culture we live in with new eyes. Peace out

Interesting concept, exciting story... but poorly written
Okay, I'll admit that, for a while, this book had me hooked. I managed to look past the distracting rhyming adjectives ("bruised and confused", "wired and tired"). I tried to look past the fact that Reverend Jesse J. Buchanan suddenly became Reverend Samuel J. Buchanan (was there a legal name change we weren't made aware of?). But how on earth did Gavin survive being impaled with "a jagged piece of wooden decking, ugly enough to slay a vampire" without any medical attention? In fact, a few minutes later he's snuggled up with his girlfriend, trying to decide where to go on vacation! Was the editor asleep? Judging by the lapses throughout the book, I'm tempted to suggest that there was no editor. Too bad... all these problems ruined an otherwise exciting story. Rather than looking forward to reading a sequel (the story is left open-ended enough for a sequel to be possible), I felt like tossing the book across the room. The only reason I give the book two stars instead of one is because it started out with a bang and got me hooked right away. I wish that momentum hadn't been interrupted by such silly, obvious problems.

DRIVEN
JUST WHEN I START THINKING THAT THERE ARE NO ORIGINAL IDEAS FOR SERIAL KILLERS OUT THERE AND THAT MOST WRITERS OF SUSPENSE ARE JUST THOMAS HARRIS OR JAMES PATTERSON CLONES. BAM!!!!! ALONG COMES W G GRIFFITHS WITH ONE OF THE MOST ORIGINAL THRILLERS I HAVE READ IN YEARS. OK, THERE WERE A COUPLE TIMES THAT I WANTED TO HIT THE HERO (GAVIN) OVER THE HEAD WITH A HAMMER FOR BEING SO STUPID. BUT THE NOVEL IS THRILLING AND THE ENDING IS VERY CLEVER.
THERE ARE PLENTY OF INTERESTING CHARACTERS (AMY, BUCK ETC....)
AND THE STORY MOVES AT A FAST SMOOTH PACE. AFTER YOU HAVE READ THIS NOVEL YOU WILL NEVER LOOK AT A TURTLE THE SAME WAY AGAIN.

Heart Pounding and Moves like the Wind
The premis of hypnotically discovered past lives being anything but human reincarnation was enough to get me to buy the book, but the way I was hooked immediatly and held captive with characters whose lives I valued as much as my own earns this one 5 stars. Griffiths had me hearing, smelling, feeling and most of all believing in a world that enveloped me with each page. I'm looking forward to the sequel, which according to wggriffiths.com, will be out next Spring. Great diologue and the action, especially at the end, made me feel like I was reading a movie in the making. Highest recommondations.

The Heretic's Handbook of Quotations: Cutting Comments on Burning Issues
Published in Paperback by See Sharp Press (1992)
Authors: Charles Bufe, Tom Tomorrow, and Bill Griffith
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Boring, boring, boring
i bought this book because a)i colelct quotes and b)it sounded controversial. Boy was i ever disappointed

Do you know what an anarchist is? There are punks who sing down with the government. There are workers who hate government rules and taxes. There are business men who want an end to regulations. And then there are "intellectuals" who use big words to fill hundreds of pages on steady state economies and the like. Remember Karl Marx, the long winded Marxist who droned on about the proletariat, the bourgeious (sp?) and the formation of capital? This book reads just like that

While i suppose these are, technically, quotes, most are several paragraphs long. Is it really a book of quotes when each quote is half a page long? You certainly aren't going to be memorizing any of these - they are way too long

These quotes aren't controversial, unless of course your audience loves to use the word proletariat. Most of these quotes are just plain confusing. And they're all boring. Boring, boring, boring

The book is horribly one sided. It's not biased towards liberals, it's biased towards long winded "intellectuals" who like big words and vague concepts

Bottom line, you won't be quoting these in conversation, using them in term papers or discussing them at group functions. i'm hard pressed to say when you would ever use these quotes - they're just so long and elitistly boring. i really wanted to like a book with a name like "the heretics book of quotations", but i just couldn't

absolutely indispensable--and addictive as heck
I purchased Bufe's eclectic collection of banter and agitprop some three(+) years ago, and haven't tired of it one bit. Initially, I thought it might be a good resource for writing, which it is, but was surprised to find myself constantly picking it up between projects, thumbing through it while on the phone, etc.

My only misgivings, as mild as they are, concern Bufe's, at times, transparent partisanship. Favoring Anarchism, he seems to present its patron saints (Bakunin, Goldman, et al.) in a more generous light than Marxists and other Socialists--and his representative sample of Christians and Christian thought flirts (tirelessly) with the straw-person fallacy. (Don't believe the hype--Jesus was a Socialist)

All in all, 'The Handbook' is a progressive's gold mine; I highly recommend it to any thoughtful person.

Great Stuff!
I love this book. I originaly bought it just for shits and giggles- but I've ended up using it for spicing up many articles and countless e-mails. An essential piece of reference material for the anarchist, atheist, dissident and all around provocateur.

Enjoyable, but missing the involvement of Andy himself
Given that Andy Griffith is a private person with seemingly little interest in talking about himself or his career, this book met my expectations. The author did what he could to gather information about Andy in spite of Andy's apparent unwillingness to participate in the creation of this biography. His absence is a handicap, certainly, as I'm sure he could lend some depth to the anecdotes and old interviews. I was pleased to see that the author made an effort to avoid making this book another Mayberry-themed puff piece, though, and was glad to be reading about Andy Griffith instead of Andy Taylor.

The reader should also be aware that The Andy Griffith Story was published prior to the end of Matlock, and before several other key events in Andy Griffith's life. Illustrations are rather disappointing hand-drawings because, I presume, photo rights could not be obtained. Though I did enjoy this book, I am still hoping for an authorized - or, at least, more authoritative - biography to complete the portrait of Andy.

A nice biography of Andy Griffith's life!
I just finished reading the biography on Andy Griffith and as a fan of this man I was pleased to learn about how he got started in show biz and all the movies he was involved in post Andy Griffith Show. I was surprised to hear about his temper but pleased to hear he is a thoughtful and caring man. If you want a biography that covers Mr. Griffith's whole career I would recommend you buy this book.

Stuff About Andy I Never Knew ....
The test of any good bio is learning something new about the subject. Information about Andy Griffith isn't easy to come by, but in this instance, the author has succeeded in collecting quotes, facts, and events from private sources and turning it into a readable narrative that illuminates the subject while respecting the privacy of the man. I bought two copies: one for my mom as a gift, and one for me. If you have ANY interest in the life and career of Andy, you'll want to add your own copy to your library too.

someone the pinhead
thi book is satisfying and fun.zippy is bizzare and doesn't make much sense, so I only give it 3 stars.

Early Days of the Great Pinhead
This collection of strips from the early '80's is classic Zippy, the non-sequitors flying madly as Bill Griffith's keen satire lays waste to our consumer culture (while reveling in it!).

This is an excellent introduction to "Life According to Zippy" - I found myself at first not knowing what to make of Griffith's nonsense, but after a few pages... It makes complete sense! And then, you're hooked!

I've since collected virtually all of the Zippy collections. Let a little Zippy into your life - You'll be glad you did!

Worth the extra ordering time
While Anglo-Saxon poetry is not normaly thought of as "Page-Turning", this poem is not bad. I recomend this text, well, because it contains the poem (I suspect that you are not reading the poem for fun). If you are looking for something beutiful to put on your bookshelf, maybe a differant text would be better. The plain white cover is pretty bland. I recomend the poem to anyone interested in Anglo-Saxon litterature.

The Empire Writes Back: Theory and Practice in Post-Colonial Literature (New Accents)

All in one
Despite its "trendy" title -- very postmodern, combining Salman Rushdie with George Lucas and Star Wars -- and the multiple authorship, this survey is a very readable, clearly articulated consideration of the central problems and issues in post-colonial scholarship. The authors write seamlessly as one, not as a committee, though it is clear that they combine complementary areas of expertise. The consideration of feminist scholarship was perhaps the most disappointing: unlike the other analyses, it seemed desultory. The book is also to be commended for being not merely a conscientious account of post-colonial research, but also a thoughtful and fair-minded critique as well.
