A Real World Situation That Occurs In Teen's Lives Everyday
'Sons of Liberty' was a very majestic book. I know a lot of my peers who could relate to the conflicts that occur in this story. 'Sons of Liberty' was writtin by Adele Griffin and was a nominee for the '1997 National Book Award'.I would assume that this book would be intended for 7th and 8th graders; possibly 9th. It wasn't too sophisticated but there were a few arduous, or hard, words. Out of five stars, I would give it 3 stars. The only aggravating thing was that it took so long to get to the main point. I read half of the book before I actually got to the main conflict. When it got to the remarkable incident, the story had meaning with schocking details. It made up for itself and became a pretty good book.

A boy in his struggles with his family.
This book is about a boy, named Rock. He lives with his army-like dad, his smarter, older brother, baby sister and his mother who is on the brink of going crazy. The dad is very abusive and treats Rock and his brother, Cliff, like soldiers. Rock believes what his father says when he criticizes the boys. However, Cliff is smarter. He has a plan to try to keep his family together. Cliff plans different ways to make things better for the family. He also helps Cliff and Rock's friends.

Rock is not a good student. His dad has convinced him that school is not important. He finds he really likes History. His history teacher and friend is the only person that understands him him. He has an assignment to write a paper on the American Revolution. Throughout the book, he relates his family and personal experiences to the characters, events and times of the revolution. This book was a 4 star because it's aimed at 5th to 7th grade readers. I'm in ninth grade; it just didn't hold my attention. The plot and characters were interesting but it's definitely a book for younger people.

Trying to save the familey
My book is about a 13 year old boy named Rock. He has lots of problem she has a father that is vary abousive, and has a mother that is agoraphobic. He has a friend named Cliff and he got a new friend named Liza. Cliff is trying to get the familey bake together and at the end of the book Liza moves away and the familey has gotten bake together and the dad is not that abusive anymore .

A FINE VIROLOGY YARDSTICK
There is hardly any significant fact about viruses that missed-out in this edition of "Fields Virology". Page after page, this sound all-inclusive reference doles out authoritative information on both viruses and viral syndromes. From taxonomy to etiology, metamorphosis to replication; the analyses of this text is grand. The same applies to its attached CD-ROM. Its practical outlook was intended to benefit both microbiologists and pathologists. Bernard Fields and his colleagues made their mark with this book. It is a great effort.
However, most botanist may not be pleased to know that little attention was paid to plant viruses. Again, many potential buyers may be demoralized by the rather high price that this virology-set demands.

Another Bible. Amazing viral world
It covers all fields of virology. Perfect and wonderful ! Easy to understand. I really recommend this book to who is involved in biology

Really a Book for BJ Computers
This book is for advanced players who are computer literate. It's main purpose is to help program a BJ computer for actual play. Additionally, one can program a BJ simulator to evaluate all the other counting methods on the market to rate their effectiveness.

This is not a good read for beginning or advanced BJ card counters. It is for those "experts" who try the fringes. Furthermore, having a BJ computer in a casino is now illegal in NV.

VERY TECHNICAL
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR THE CASINO PROFESSIONAL.

This book changed my opinion of gambling books
I ran across this book many years ago in a used bookstore (mine was the 2nd edition). I must say this book changed my opinion of books about gambling books. Up to that point, all the gambling books I've come across were laughable. But this book was startlingly different. It thoroughly explains the mathematics behind basic strategy and card counting techniques in a way that really made sense.

This may sound too advanced for many folks, but frankly the math is fairly easy to understand (it mostly uses basic statistics that you probably learned and forgot in high school).

If you are serious about card counting, the information in this book will help you evaluate BJ counting systems (or even systems you invent). It will also help you subtly modify your play for changes in rules at different casinos.

Do you need to be a computer programmer to use this book? No, but it wouldn't hurt. Is this book useful for writing BJ simulators? Yes, but it's also great for really understanding what it takes to be a really good card counter.

Personally, this book convinced me that I don't have the patience (or time) to become a good card counter. But at least now I know why.

a joy for Jeopardy! fans
It's a shame this book is out of print because there are thousands of devoted Jeopardy! watchers who would really enjoy this book. Not only does it trace the origins of the game (Merv Griffin's inspiration) and its history, it gives tons of tips that would be of use to a potential player. The biggest difference between the old game (with Art Fleming) and the new game is that in the old days, you could ring in anytime, so fast readers were rewarded. Now, you must wait until Alex finishes the question before you can ring in. That changed the game's dynamics quite a bit. There are virtually thousands of interesting tidbits within these pages: why it's impossible to cram, why men tend to be better at it than women, why it's so hard to get on the show even if you do well on the test, why contestants in second or third place no longer get to keep their money, etc... The book even includes sample Jeopardy! boards from popular categories. Even if you can't buy a copy of this book, I know it's available in many public libraries since it was published about 10 years ago. I highly recommend it to Jeopardy! fans. It definitely gives you an appreciation for even the losing players since it is much harder than you might think to play and play well.

Wonderful, surprising, literary!
I read a lot of books, and Peter Straub is one of the best in my opinion. This is a man I'd like to be stranded with on an island. The ideas he has are amazing and his writing is like none other in the genre. The Hellfire Club is a wonderful book for anyone who enjoys mystery, suspense, or just wonderful writing. My only problem (and a small one), is that I think the title is misleading and doesn't have much to do with the plot. The book is simply one of the best I've ever read. Here's to hoping Mr. Straub keeps writing for many, many years!

Excellent Read
This is the best book that Peter Straub has written in a long time, I couldn't put it down. I had to find out how it ended, and I didn't even cheat. I have been reading true crime books trying to figure out why a serial killer does what he does, but in this book you really get behind the mind of a serial killer and know he is pure evil. I recommend this book highly to anyone who enjoys a good mystery or a good horror story

His best since... the last one
There are a few things that appear to be rock solid in this world. Gravity, time, and that Peter Straub never disappoints. The Hellfire club is another in a long line of books that justifies the latter. Peter Straub uses a technique in this book, which is sometimes known as a story-within-a-story, to complement and to enrich the story. While it is a difficult technique to pull off, Peter does this seamlessly and effectively. The book is heavily layered, and can be read and understood in a variety of ways, in which the description 'a modern day crime story' is not the least of them. I could not find a single flat character in this story nor could I find a single hole in the plot. Midways, there appeared to be so many loose threads you'd never believe they all would be resolved, but Peter delivers! The book's main antagonist is the most vicious, yet almost unbelievably charming murderer I have ever known of -- and Nora Chancel is the single most complete heroine this genr! e has ever produced. In short, it's fair to say that The Hellfire Club is the most enjoyable and thought-provoking crime story I've read in years.

Written by experts for experts.
I am an undergraduate student taking a course in virology, and i find this book extremely difficult to learn from. As a reference source for a particular virus it may be of use, but use of this book as a learning tool is foolish. Yes, this book is written by experts concerning a particular field, but it seems that the authors target audience is also...experts. In introducing fundamental concepts of virology, the text constantly uses examples to a particular virus. From this particular virus, it then makes reference of a mechanism of this virus. How can one make a reference to a mechanism, when one has not yet even been exposed to the virus family themselves? Its almost like talking about the stats of a certain sports figure, and then as a foot note make reference upon how the game is played.

the only book i will ever need
As an undergraduate taking a course in virology, I found this book the only book I ever needed. It has all the information that you need and more. I just hope that they will continue to come out with a newer edition since this book is out of date and the field of virology has grown since this edition.

Need some basic science knowledge.
I read the chapter on prions and i found it to be really good and up to date. of course it requires you to know a little background knowledge but if you're reading this book you probably already fill out that category. definitely not for the layman...

Just Another Graduate Marketing Book
This book is no better than any of the other graduate level marketing books that are available. You might think that since this book has 15 authors it might have something that books with only 3 authors lacks. But, if you thought this you'd be wrong. This book offers nothing new and its extremely high price makes it even less appealing.

The best of two worlds
This book combines the knowledge of excellent scholars of marketing in a clear and structured format which is accessible to undergraduates. In addition, the cases and other teaching materials provide excellent support.

Swanwick's done better.
The protagonist is a loner on the Moon who wants nothing more than to be left alone to commune with virgin territory, but circumstances throw him into proximity with others as well as wake him up to responsibility. This is a grand theme in the old SF tradition--in fact, except for the explicit sex and the up-to-date science references (specifically, nanotech), this is something that wouldn't have been out of place in 50s SF. This is a short book, technically a novella, that oftentimes seems rushed. The pacing was kind of a jump-up and wait proposition, very irregular feeling. Michael Swanwick has done much better than this in both characters and plot. (This "review" originally appeared in First Impressions Installment One [http://www.owt.com/users/gcox/fi.contents.html].)

Hard Popcorn Science Fiction
Swanwick combines hard science fiction speculation about the future of the moon with a fastpaced action-adventure story that wouldn't be out of place in Hollywood. This is a short novel, orginally published in Asimov's Science Fiction as a novella, and it well worth reading in one sitting. So what are you waiting for? Pop some popcorn and start reading.

All Let's Go books must be supplemented
I am not sure Harvard makes you a good travel writer. Take what you think is the average Harvard student and stick them in the middle of a strange country on a very limited budget. Now imagine them writing a book about it--- that is Let's Go.

The books vary like the students (with no experience) that write them. They perform a decent job, but should be supplemented especially if the book covers multiple countries. If you are on a cheap budget then use their accomodation list and someone else's book to help you around.

Greece---the islands at least---is different... everyone and their dog will be waiting for you at the ferry landing offering you a place to stay. If you are with a goup take one of the offers, they are (inexpensive) and for the most part nice.
If you are alone, the people will just rent you a group room for the same group price. Traveling alone is the only time the Greece book will (marginally) help because you might be able to actually find something cheaper.

Agathos!
I've always entrusted my travels to Let's Go. Sifted through Lonely Planet and Frommer's and all seem fairly reliable and informative (except for monetary discrepencies which can't be helped because of price changes throughout the year).

What sets Let's Go apart from other budget travel books is the excellent writing style. It's witty, whimsical and humorous. As a literature buff, I find myself grinning at how some authors pen their experiences. These folks know how to write!

I just wish the portion on Cyclades Islands was more detailed. But I suppose one book can't cover just one part of Greece. Also, can Let's Go change the quality of the paper? It's rough to my touch and hard to keep bent. In addition, I have to lug the book around everywhere and would appreciate a sturdier, more indestructible book. And how about some beautiful color photos like Lonely Planet?

Overall, kudos to Let's Go Greece 2000 for the quality of the writing and reliable information.

GREAT TALES AND CHATTER ... UNTIL THE LAST CHAPTER
Like the man who "wrote" it (he had help from co-author David Bender), Merv Griffin's "Making the Good Life Last" is an entertaining, conversational confection chockfull of stories and anecdotes about his life in show business. This book is, in many ways, a sequel to Merv's best-selling autobioraphy of a couple of decades ago. "Good Life" picks up when that tome left off, with Merv reinventing himself as a businessman and, eventually, as one of the world's richest men. There are great Tallulah tales, and delightful stories about Al Pacino, Vanna White, Orson Welles, Clint Eastwood, Cary Grant, Lucille Ball, Eva Gabor, Nancy and Ron, Donald Trump, Ted Koppel and Errol Flynn ... who Merv met while the actor was nude. "Now how shall I put this?" Merv muses. "I think it's fair to say that Flynn brandished a sword both on and off the screen." It's all warm and witty and cozy chatter from someone who feels like a friend. Until the last chapter. There, Merv starts to spout off about how much money he has ... not in dollar amounts, but in boastful brags. There's too much talk about buying jets, yachts, hotels and casinos, of building this house and that house (with "house" sometimes meaning "ranch" or "compound"), of having marble and tile imported from across the world, of collecting horses and priceless art works by French Impressionists and Colorists, of having an associate deposit a check for $273 million ("the interest alone was $50,000 a day"), when most senior citizens at the same bank that day were depositing their monthly Social Security check for "$400 or $500 at most." This is when Merv needs to be tuned out and turned off. "Making the Good Life Last" is good ... until the last drop.
